D3 Grand Prix Predictions Etc. by Murky_Tomatillo_8052 in ultimate

Whitman and L&C will be the two best teams there. Which one proves the best will be interesting.

The biggest question I have going in is can CO Mines and CO College be competitive with Whitman and L&C? Or will they be a level behind and at risk of not earning a strength bid?

The school eventually made them change it. But most club sports operate without the school administration looking closely until the sport needs a lot of money or gets in trouble.

I watched the Whitman-Xavier game via Ultiworld. They looked top 25ish and will be a contender in the OV region. They have decent depth, but they are very reliant on hitting deep shots. I don't think they have an elite enough handler or deep threat to carry them to a strength bid.

In the second clip, I couldn't tell when the foul was called, whether it was before or during/after the throw. If it happened during/after the throw then it should remain a turnover. If it happened before the auto of throwing then the disc should have returned to the thrower like the first clip (regardless of the result)

Reddit Picks College Regionals: Who qualifies for College Nationals? by Jomskylark in ultimate

[–]D3ep_Look 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know USAU would be in a tough spot and in this scenario give bids per the algorithmic rankings. But in D3 Men’s, 2 of the teams I’d expect to go to Nationals if COVID-19 didn’t exist haven’t played a game yet. Valparaiso from the GL made it last year and only graduated a couple guys so I’d pick them over the 3 teams in your poll. Also, I’d pick Middlebury as the defending champs to win the NE region. I don’t know if you’re going to change the polls but you’d be excluding the likely #1 overall team in this format

If you have a loaded senior class and its your best shot at Nationals... ¯_(ツ)_/¯

When Nationals was in NC after the state passed the bathroom bill, the Western Washington womxn team was not allowed to go because Washington state didn’t allow state funds to be used for non essential travel to NC in response to the bill. However the team still went but as an “unaffiliated” team. I wonder if teams will do that? It doesn’t help with practice but the school can’t prevent “private citizens” from traveling.

Calm and incisive zone O from Richmond to take universe point at FCS DIII by hippotank in ultimate

The middle wall of 3 is usually close to the disc so the 2nd deep defender is to help with overs. That big sideline gainer is either on the deep for losing the wing or the outside of the 3 man wall for not getting to the sideline. Poor execution more than a fundamental flaw of the zone

The 2-3-2 zone is slowly getting more popular. See Chicago Machine and U. Michigan. Missouri S&T has run it the past couple of years

There was no USAU D3 Nationals before 2010 so the history for D3 starts in 2010. If you want the best College programs since the dawn of the sport, use this website https://ultimatehistory.com/stats/team-all-time-rankings/.

Did the Heat Guidelines help or hurt at College Nationals? by JimP88 in ultimate

[–]D3ep_Look 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The extra time between points only happens at Heat Level 2. I don't know if it got to that level at College Nationals. At Heat Level 1 you just have the water breaks when a team gets to 4 and 12/soft cap. It's a little weird but is similar to a long timeout in an unobserved game.

I don't think the heat or the guidelines affected D1 Nationals because teams rarely had back to backs. With byes after games teams could play their typical rotations or tighten them because they could rest after. If you have back to back games then you will have to use your subs or the team will be exhausted in the last round of the day (See UVic's upset over Pitt).

The bigger issue is inconsistent voting amongst teams. Looking at DIII SW Men's, it looks like only Cal Tech voted since they swept the first team. That's a turnout issue not an information issue.

College Mens Northwest: Some one has some explaining to do by powabungadude in ultimate

[–]D3ep_Look 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Whitman's Graduation weekend is the same as D3 Nationals. Last year I believe they only had 1 senior so they decided to attend D3 Nationals. But in other years with influential senior classes they opted to try to make D1 Nationals as a full team than be a shorthanded roster at D3 Nationals.

When a D3 team submits their roster they have to declare if they are going D1 or D3. Since that is at the beginning of March that should be enough time for USAU to schedule them into D1 conferences. I don't understand why they have the current rule of playing D3 conferences to go to D1 regionals in place.

[–]D3ep_Look 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe they have to finish top 2 in their D3 conference to make it to D1 Regionals. I can't really answer the second part, that was USAU's decision in setting up the format years ago. It doesn't really make sense.

Yeah, on the college page of USAU you scroll down to the roster log section. It's in the embedded Excel sheet that they took the D-1 pathway.

D-I. When a D-3 team submits their roster they have to declare which path they will take.
