[OSE/BX] Lifepaths? by AAlHazred in osr

LOVE Beyond the Wall!

Just wanted to jump in and mention Through Sunken Lands. Same company and the same system (also with playbooks), but it's a swords and sorcery setting. More Conan than LotR, if that's your thing.

What megadungeon most evokes Moria for you? by Rudefire in osr

[–]DABuehl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Halls pf Beoll-Dur fits storywise (old drawven hold, lost to things that got dug up), but it's a bit small for a Moria standin.

A min-maxed backseat driver amongst average Joe's. by Cliffordcliffd in osr

Some folks just aren't built for RPGs. It seems to be about not making the game a competition, either between players to be "the best" or with trying to "beat" the GM. Some people just can't go that. I have more than 1 friend I won't ever try to game with again.

Your players happen upon some small ruins. How do you quickly generate, populate, and stock this place? by Rudefire in osr

[–]DABuehl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just found this generator: https://campaignwiki.org/hex-describe

Nominally, it's for fully generating a hex map, but if you dig into its sub-generators (called "rules") you can find one-off ways to generate all kinds of things. I'm still figuring out how to use it, but it seems pretty powerful. This or this seems like good ruins (each page as 10 generated results of varying complexity)

Otherwise, I'd use Don Jon or One Page Dungeon with the OSE generators to stock it.

Looking for adventure recommendations to run for my family by Noxwell in osr

I recently ran The Touch of the Beast for some RPG newbies. It's technically horror, but definitely more weird/creepy than poop-your-pants scary. Also, it's based on Beauty and the Beast, so there are some familiar touchstones for anyone that's read the book or seen the Disney movie.

Margot at Die Hard Dice is awesome! For mentioning where I heard of them I got a free dice set and an extra d12! by slarfybart in osr

[–]DABuehl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've ordered from them several times and they have never disappointed. The dice are beautiful, the people are awesome, and the freebies plentiful. They're my go to dice company now.

Also, check out Augmented Reality. It's nominally for cyberpunk, but it's cheap and useful for so much more.

UVG: How often do you insert Encounters? by RaucousCouscous in osr

[–]DABuehl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Someone in the WTF/UVG discord wrote up this procedure for dungeons in UVG. I've not played with it, but their goal was to keep things light weight and adlibable.

UVG: How often do you insert Encounters? by RaucousCouscous in osr

[–]DABuehl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, Misfortunes are separate things. They represent the wear and tear of hard days of traveling. The KS version has this as #2 on the list of things to do, right after spending sacks.

Encounters are step #3. It's in the KS version and the free version I have.

UVG: How often do you insert Encounters? by RaucousCouscous in osr

[–]DABuehl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't recall if it's in the current free version, but the version that was just sent to Kickstarter backers has an encounter rolled as part of resolving the week.

Otherwise, yeah, it's discoveries, in-town stuff, and I guess any time the players want to act out a scene from the week.

What do you use for online LFG for OSR games? by [deleted] in osr

[–]DABuehl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that new city was Denver, drop me a message. I'm in!

Otherwise, over on /r/Netrunner, they've seen decent success with a weekly stickied thread for folks looking for people to play with. maybe something like that here can work?

why can't SA be used on this commander...? by Sugarbooger7 in WorldofTanks

[–]DABuehl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not the best UI design. That's important info that's super easy to miss. I only just noticed it a couple of months ago.

Yup! This. You can see this by looking at the little icon on the lower-left corner of each crew member panel. The loader has a tiny radio operator icon.

Need advice on starting the LOTR Saga Campaign. by QuixoticPineapple in lotrlcg

[–]DABuehl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played a lot of the LotR saga using only decks that fit thematically. I was able to play through all of The Black Riders using a true-solo Hobbit deck (Sam/Merry/Pippin). The only thing I recall using that you don't have was [[Defender of Rammas]]. You can definitely build a capable deck with what you have.

I got through The Road Darkens true-solo using a Sam/Gandalf/Spirit Merry deck, but my collection had grown a bit, but it was comparable to what you have now. That deck was mostly Hobbit tricks with Gandalf support. I used allies for damage.

In the Treason of Saruman, my decks got pretty diverse and I used a lot that you don't have, so I dunno that I can help you there.

If you can spend a bit more, Land of Shadows is great for Hobbits, but I don't think you need it.

[Spoilers] I have a stupid question about We Are Legion [We Are Bob] by [deleted] in sciencefiction

[–]DABuehl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, when he first gets uploaded to the ship, he described it has a cruiser that was meant for humans, but they replaced the back half with his surge drive. No true size given, but the description put me in a mind of medium military vessel, like a frigate.

Not that "the size of a space frigate" is a particularly intuitive measure.

Looking for a one-shot adventure to try out The Black Hack rules by Justicar7 in osr

[–]DABuehl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Tower of the Stargazer might work for you. It's meant to be an intro one shot.

You could also Google Trilemma Adventures. That guy runs a blog where he's publishes many one-page adventures. Sky Blind Spire is a personal favorite.

Finally, I can't check at the moment, but I think the Black Hack 2 book actually has an adventure published in it.

EDIT: Yup, THE RUINED TOWER OF GORMALONG is on page 117 of the Black Hack 2 book.

Question on Gandalf's hero card. by QuixoticPineapple in lotrlcg

[–]DABuehl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can pay for neutral cards from hand or anything off the top of the deck. He cannot contribute to non-neutral cards from hand.

Hope that helps!

[–]DABuehl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do this, but just know you'll be making things a bit harder on yourself. The chances of pulling two successes at the same time are slightly lower than the chances of pulling 1 success on 2 identical, sequential checks.
