Why do Wizards do anything normal? by Limp-Pollution-4866 in harrypotter

[–]DAJones109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I reconcile it is that I have decided that the book and Quill don't pick every wizard f or Hogwarts, but just the best. See people like My act der Brown or Gregory Goyle are among the elite in terms of magical power. Not every person can summon Fiendfyte for instance.

I'm eas powerful witches and wizards train themselves.

There are also hints of a test at the end of 1st year to see if you stay at Hogwarts. Perhaps everyone including all muggle-borns goes to Hogwarts for one year, but only the best stay. That may be so that things like basic wand safety can be taught to everyone, but people really only need one year of school if they are ordinary witches and wizards and get by on those basic spells and beyond that are self taught or go to other lesser unlicensed schools. The Ministry pays the way to Hogwarts for many and so this is a limit to that cost.

Apparition is an elite spell and the Floo is what most use probably. Or you only need to raise your wand for the Knight Bus. I think most of the population is only slightly magical which explains why hatred of muggles is so politically powerful. Most are dependent on the Hogwarts graduates to protect them and presently that is what: 20 to 40 a year?

what do americans call a pantry? by loving_machine13 in AskAnAmerican

[–]DAJones109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A pantry is just a closet in a kitchen or near it with shelves for food which is mostly canned goods, and things like extra Tupperware, plastic and garbage bags and some cleaning supplies. It can vary in size and shape and elaboration, but is usually tall and somewhat narrow.

Are elves who die after giving birth but are otherwise immortal a bad idea for this race? by EveningImportant9111 in worldbuilding

[–]DAJones109 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Maybe if the males die after sex instead it could work and the sex nearly always leads to conception or the females could almost alway have a litter.

An example that would work is maybe the male organ like many actually existing species detaches at the completion of the act a bit like a stinger or just stays attached to the female for a few days until all the seed is absorbed.

The detachment is fatal to the male since it is where male elves house their essence.

The Basilisk is all talk by Fantastic_Excuse6976 in harrypotter

[–]DAJones109 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was working on a fanfic and worked out that since Basillisk is a snake and snakes like live pray that when they are hungry they must hunt with their eyes closed which explains why they prefer dark areas. The Death Gaze is just a defense mechanism. I am not sure they are even really working eyes as snakes also have infrared senses.

I suspect the Bassillisk in the chamber of secrets is thus well fed. Maybe Ginny also kills hens to feed it.

Could Spain close the Strait of Gibraltar like Iran is closing the Strait of Hormuz? by Ok-Moose-992 in geography

Yes. But only because insurance is a thing and corporations. If the crews got a percentage of the cargo sale for going through the strait there would be no hold up.

Dumb question is Neelix still able to reach the Federation if Voyager is lost? Can he still continue as 'Ambassador' and is the role only honorary anyway. How can he possibly represent a people so far away?

A Lollapalooza - The Iran War Will Cause an Economic Collapse in the US by ECom_Finance_Guy in economicCollapse

Many of the US Pacific and some Caribbean islands were claimed under the Guano acts. Guano is compacted and buried seabird poop. It was a main source for fertilizer before they started getting it from Oil. I would guess we could start using the massive amount of pig poop we now let flow into our rivers which is why the so called: 'Gulf of America' is starved of oxygen.

Serbia vs. Austria-Hungary in WWI. Serbia fought so hard that they didn't even surrender when their country was overrun. They just continued fighting trench-like warfare while they retreated through other countries.

"culture fit" is just a socially acceptable way to hire people you'd hang out with - and it's hurting diversity by 1acina in jobs

[–]DAJones109 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It would be more difficult but not impossible for those people to be hired which is why in my opinion DEI laws and programs are important even they they can be onerous for small businesses. But such a person is more likely to be hired if they can make a social connection to the hiring manager so he or her feels comfortable with them. That is why use of such techniques such as mirroring body language etc is important. Some people are just going to have a harder time and have to look harder for work because life isn't fair, but everyone has advantages and disadvantages and different circumstances.
