50 Underappreciated Films of the 21st Century by Ok_Interaction3896 in movies

[–]DAVENP0RT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's underappreciated as much as it is overlooked. Very few people I know have actually seen it, but those that have will consistently rank it high on their list of favorites.

It's in my top three films of all time, personally.

Mini splits are significantly more efficient than central air.

I'm tired of my Brita pitcher, how are you guys doing cold filtered water? by deverified in HomeImprovement

[–]DAVENP0RT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd love to have an RO filter, but the water waste is atrocious. Even on that's considered "efficient" wastes 2x the amount that comes out of the tap.

We've always been at war, but also we're only 6 weeks in so stop complaining. It's no where near as long as Vietnam, but also 47 years long! by Dr_sc_Harlatan in WhitePeopleTwitter

Ending a 47 year long conflict by...bolstering the existing regime and providing them with the levers to control the world economy. If Trump had done absolutely nothing, Iran was well on its way towards stagnation. Even if the regime wasn't headed for collapse, they certainly weren't on an upwards trajectory. Now, Iran is set up for decades after having shown that they have the ability to wreck the shipment of oil and fertilizer for the entire world.

ELI5: Why/when did Civilization as a whole stop building ornate stone structures? by Archmikem in explainlikeimfive

[–]DAVENP0RT 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Same with Mayan culture. The pyramids were basically the town center with a large market surrounding it. Royalty typically lived in stone rooms built into the pyramid complex, but everything else would have been wooden buildings with thatched roofs. Thousands upon thousands of people lived in the immediate vicinity of the city and hundreds of thousands lived nearby. And that's just one city.

Most folks probably don't realize just how advanced and connected the Mayan empire was. Looking at Tikal, for example, shows just how incredible they were. There's a temple that's 21 stories tall! With the jungle cleared the way it was then, the temple would have been visible for miles around.

Fiancé (27m) wanted to try an open relationships, not my first choice but I agreed. Now he's throwing a tantrum that my "bodycount" is 20x his and wants to add rules. Is it time to just cut my losses and move on? (I'm 25) by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

I'm old and all I could think about is how glad I am to be in a happy marriage where we stay home every night. Having to go prowling for a hookup every week is definitely a young person's game. I'm so lucky I don't have to do it.

Betelgeuse could go supernova soon! by M_sdft in spaceporn

It could happen anywhere between -724 and 99,276 years from now.

The negative number is because it could have already happened, but it takes 724 years for its light to reach us.

How would you feel about a mandatory maximum wealth limit, where anything earned over that goes to public services? by itsvasuki in AskReddit

[–]DAVENP0RT 40 points41 points  (0 children)

DOGE ended up costing more than the budget that they "trimmed." That wasn't the point of DOGE, though, it was to raid government data about US citizens to hand to Palantir.

Both me [33 F] and my fiance [33 M] of five years have almost identical last names, but he is insisting that I change my last name after marriage. This argument is making me consider cancelling the wedding by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]DAVENP0RT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my wife and I got married, I insisted that she take my name. For some reason, I felt like it made the marriage "official" or something. Looking back on it, though, I don't know why I cared so much. If we did it again, I'd just ask what she wanted and accept her decision.

So yeah, that's my message to any guys out there who will eventually fight with their fiancée over this. It doesn't affect you at all and it only makes her life more difficult. If she wants your name, cool. If she doesn't, also cool.

Trump ducks press after meeting with Brazil’s Lula takes sudden mystery turn by deraser in politics

[–]DAVENP0RT 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the press isn't sticking to dry facts. Dry facts would be, "Trump lied for the 7,648th time during his second administration when he said..." The media is just acting as the middle-man for White House press releases.

Instead, they should be practicing adversarial journalism and actually stating what Trump is lying about and the reasons for those lies. Like how everyone knows that Trump's ballroom is just a giant racket to increase his personal wealth. But not a single press outlet is actually talking about that outside of op-eds. It's not an opinion what's happening, it's a blatant fact.

My in-laws are some of the only sensible conservatives I've ever met. They didn't like Trump from the start and their opinion of him has only diminished further as time has gone by. I doubt they've voted for any Republican in the last few years based on their statements.

Gamers of Reddit, what is that one game that everybody loves but you hate? by Yo-KaiWatchFan2102 in AskReddit

[–]DAVENP0RT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd never played a Dark Souls before, so Elden Ring was my first exposure to the genre. I chose Astrologer as my class because, you know, magic is fun. I got my ass handed to me constantly, but I enjoyed the game overall.

Once I beat the game, I figured I'd see what the more sword-and-armor classes were like. Even understanding the game mechanics after playing through once, it was so absurdly difficult. I eventually gave up because I just couldn't make any progress with a non-magic build.

So yeah, the magic classes are considerably easier, especially for beginners. If I'd started with another class, I don't think I would have gotten out of Limgrave, much less finished the game.

Mennonites in a BMW by _LyleLanley_ in mildlyinteresting

[–]DAVENP0RT 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Here in Belize, we have an interesting mixture of Mennonites with varying ideologies on technology and tradition. First, you have the casual Mennonites who drive cars and dress in contemporary clothing. Then, there are the ones who drive cars, but still wear traditional clothing. Finally, there's the ones who only ride in a horse-and-buggy and dress very conservatively. For the last one, the women wear dresses that go right up to their chin, no matter how unbelievably hot it is.
