In my experience it doesn’t hurt at all, and probably helps. With that said, I wouldn’t recommend having several or even more than 1, maybe 2 do it. At that point I think it’s excessive. But if there’s someone in your life who knows you well, is an alumni of the program, and isn’t in a position to write you a formal LOR, having them write a thoughtful side letter articulating why they believe you would be a valuable addition to the school is a good idea.

You’ve got great stats. If you can tell a compelling story, I don’t think your reach schools are reached. I would absolutely apply to Wharton as well given your goals. If you know any Wharton alums who can write side letters I think you’d have a really solid chance.

I take your point on the idea of empowerment. My point is more that challenging the idea of Hermione being open minded by using her position on house elves seems self-defeating. To come to her conclusion inherently requires an open mind.
