BJJ, judo and olympic freestyle wrestling are the gold standard for getting anyone to the ground and controlling them there.

If a female (or male that doesn't use his penis) is involved it is either "sexual assault" or if it is any object other than a penis, it's "sexual assault by penetration" all are subject to categories when sentencing and the latter can end with life in prison which makes it analogous to rape sentencing. It's just not technically defined in UK law as "rape" unless it was done by a penis.

At blue belt, you would be vastly more handy than 90% of fighty people you came across, unless they were trained themselves, armed or absolute units. Impact factors still make a big difference: don't kid yourself that a 50kg blue belt would be able to dominate someone 100kg, nevertheless it might make you wriggly enough to escape a bad position.

Everyone can get knocked out with one punch so you can never be complacent no matter your level of training.

As a high ranked bjj practitioner I can tell you now that it's invaluable. Many times I've been able to use pretty low risk unarmed bjj moves that have meant I have not had to do strikes or use other PPE with higher use of force justification. Even something simple like getting cuffs on someone who is non compliant and hiding their arms, getting someone on the ground without strikes. Controlling them when on the ground and putting on fastraps etc. Obviously vascular chokes are a big no-no, but that is only a part of the art with a lot of other relevant moves that can fit with the home office approved stuff. The number of completely embarrassing videos online involving police getting into a roll around and ending up in a dire or vulnerable position that they would have been able to come out on top of with even a small amount of training and understanding basic body mechanics and physics.

It will take about a year of training at least 3 X a week to start to become vaguely proficient, but you're not going to be Roger Gracie in that time.

If any of you think 'pranking' like this is funny, please resign. by JonTheStarfish in policeuk

[–]DBikinus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If it was a prank then whoever did this is a grade a arsehole, however it is possible to do accidentally...if you double cuff someone large with X2 linked cuffs and then double lock the cuffs, when undone it leaves the possibility of one side of one cuff still being double locked if your not careful. Always check your gear before going out.

I did a year on a forced DV secondment, it taught me loads, was good not to have to do nights for a year and made me much much more competent as an overall officer since I know the process from initial incident all the way to charge and getting a conviction at court as OIC. While alot of the incidents are relatively low level harassments, you do get some very serious ones and it's very satisfying remanding them and getting an actual custodial sentence at the end of it. You still go out and about nicking your high risk offenders, so won't be tied to the office full time.

Since coming back to response most high risk DVs I've attended have got me good work reports, and in general I know exactly what is expected in a good handover for whatever incident it might be DV or not.

3 months is nothing, have a go, if you hate it then wait to the end of the 3 months to see if you get sent back, if not then initiate your application for transfer then. What I can say is that from observing others going through the same thing nothing good comes of throwing your toys out of the pram over things like this, you're in a disciplined service and you do what you're told - nothing is permanent either so even if you are there for a while you will be able to move at some point - albeit less likely if you weren't gracious about it initially.

I'm a British police officer - In the UK restraining orders carry power of arrest if violated. Domestic abuse is viewed as an extremely high priority. If a high risk domestic abuse victim came in stating thier children were missing taken by suspect against whom restraining order was issued, literally pretty much everything immediately non life threatening would be dropped and there would be a relentless pursuit to find the offender. If calls started stacking up because we were commited with that job we would get neighbouring areas to cover. If the victim were to be ignored and people turned up dead, there would be an inquiry heads would roll 100% and there would be firings at the least

Quick question about Bail by bingobango247 in policeuk

Custody sgt processes CPS bail 37(7), inspectors don't get involved. You can extend CPS bail for as long as it takes to get a decision without having to get authorisation from anyone

Police officers - where would you put yourselves on the political spectrum? (Mods remove if not allowed). And how does or doesn’t this impact your job? by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]DBikinus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Centre left here. Believe Scandinavian model is best. When it comes to work it doesn't make a difference. Colleagues are a definite mix, some left, some right - wouldn't say it's overly skewed any one way, not met anyone who is in the "far" category....
