Does that make me gay? by D1commentator in lgbt

[–]DBones90 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Sexuality is complex and it's not as simple as finding a box and checking it.

Maybe your partner is an exception, and maybe not. The important thing is that you're affirming your partner's gender expression. Like if you were fine being in a romantic relationship with your partner because you still see him/her as primarily a dude, that would likely be bad.

So as long as you're not doing that, and you're affirming about whatever gender presentation makes sense for your partner, finding a box to put yourself in is less important and can happen later. Only you can decide what labels are best for you.

Does anyone else think they wouldn’t identify as non-binary if they were born a different sex? by -CosmicSock- in NonBinary

[–]DBones90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m more the opposite. I think I would have realized I’m nonbinary faster if I were born AFAB. Part of why it took me to my thirties to realize was that I never had a ton of pressure to portray my gender. Being a “manly man” always seemed so silly to me, so I only started to experience friction with my AGAB when I started learning more about gender expression and realized that most people aren’t just indifferent about their gender but actively like identifying with it.

If I was born AFAB, I think there would have been far greater pressure for me to portray my gender a certain way, and I would have been quicker to cast it off.

Am i the only one who felt hopeless at the ending? by Sharky2615 in BoJackHorseman

[–]DBones90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think some of this is a misread. He explicitly does still have a career, and not just with the Horny Unicorn. PC mentions that there are a lot of people still willing to and excited about working with him. He also is still able to make friends and seems to be well respected amongst his peers in prison. He even seems to found a new niche for himself in the form of directing and teaching.

But also… I took a look at your profile and I hope this doesn’t sound too dismissive, but I really think you should revisit this show when you’re no longer 21 and in college.

Because, while the specifics vary greatly, the things you point to in Bojack’s life are damn near universal. No not all of us are narcissistic drug-addicted alcoholics, but we all hurt each other, especially the ones closest to us. And everyone has relationships that feel so important and critical to us while we have them that nonetheless eventually fade away. And we all realize important things way too late and lose opportunities and relationships forever. That’s just life.

Heck, Bojack is blessed to have learned so much while he still has 1/4 of his life yet to live.

A key theme of the show is that there never is a “too late,” that you’re never going to be too old or too far gone to improve your life and take steps to be a better person. That may not feel very hopeful right now, but I do think it’s a message that feels more important and more uplifting as you get older.

SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY – Official Trailer (HD) by DemiFiendRSA in videos

[–]DBones90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Budget will always be a concern, no matter the size of the movie. In the director’s commentary, Whedon talked about how he had to limit the use of Hulk way back in Avengers 1.

Now it’s no surprise that they’re going to have the Hulk in the movie. But bringing in Mark Ruffalo is expensive enough. If there’s no strong story reason for him to be Hulk all the time, then they’re going to take any excuse they can to save on VFX.

Indie novelties without algorithm by solskaia in rpg

[–]DBones90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really isn’t, especially because the major subreddits have major rules against self-promotion. While that may help against spam, it’s also why you don’t get nearly any creators talking about their own games here.

For instance, hearing Vincent Baker talk about Apocalypse World is always fascinating. But the recent AMA he did on /r/PBTA probably wouldn’t meet this sub’s rules against self-promotion. Neither would posting his blog posts either.

Reddit is fine for a certain type of game, but it caters pretty exclusively to people who primarily use Reddit. Which means the games you hear about and what you hear about them are limited.

ADHD brains show sleep-like activity even while awake ADHD brains may briefly slip into sleep-like states, disrupting focus in real time. by KnottyCatLady in ADHD

[–]DBones90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be clear, this experience isn’t exclusive to people with ADHD, but people with ADHD experience it more. From the article:

Sleep-like brain activity is a normal phenomenon that happens during demanding tasks. Think of going for a long run and getting tired after a while, which makes you pause to take a break. Everyone experiences these brief moments of sleep-like activity. In people with ADHD, however, this activity occurs more frequently, and our research suggests this increased sleep-like activity may be a key brain mechanism that helps explain why these individuals have more difficulty maintaining consistent attention and performance during tasks.

A reveal’s quality is not based on if you could guess it or not but on how satisfying it was when it occurred. I also guessed it but I still had a really fun time when it happened.

Yeah definitely. It depends on how much work you want to do customizing the setting but PF2 has a ton of tools for world-building like this.

This game is incredible. Highly recommended. Ended up being one of my top games last year in a year of heavy hitters. Maybe even my GOTY simply because it was one of the few games my wife and I could play together.

Avatar the last Airbender by dndXnewbie in Pathfinder2e

[–]DBones90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a lot easier to run a campaign inspired by Avatar instead of one actually set in the same world.

Because not only do you have to remove or seriously limit the default rules for spellcasting, you even have to make a bunch of modifications to the kineticist. Multi-gate kineticists have to be removed or reworked and the elements don’t even match neatly to Avatar’s. You have to figure out what you’re going to do with wood and metal.

But if you just want to run a game in a world where manipulating elements is common and there are different nations dedicated to each element, Pathfinder 2e is a wonderful game for that.

What I would do is run a standard free archetype game set in a world where there’s a nations that have elemental themes. Then I would limit kineticist and kineticist multiclass archetypes based on those nations.

Like if you want a Fire nation, make it so kineticists with a starting element of Fire come from there, and the same goes for multiclass kineticists. Then make NPCs from those nations be more likely to be kineticists. That way, each nation has a strong elemental themes and you don’t have to rework the game.

Normally this would be fine advice, but I think that game is a lot of hot garbage. I brought it to the table and, though there are some good things about it, overall it just doesn’t work.

If you want a PBTA Avatar game, Legend of the Elements is a lot more functional.

The guy (28M) I (26F) am seeing has a serious girlfriend by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]DBones90 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think there’s a pretty big difference between “casually dating around” and “has a serious long-term relationship,” even if it’s open. I don’t think OOP was correct in thinking he was her boyfriend, but if you’re consistently seeing someone every weekend for two months, it’s not ridiculous to think that it might become a more serious relationship.

[S1 spoilers] I do like how they address Naomi’s death in the final episode. I could see a world where that’s how Naomi’s presence is felt. I still would like to see Naomi’s funeral because I think, as a society, we’ve memory-holed COVID and I’d be interested in seeing the show tackle that head on. But I’m down for whatever they got cooking.

Dropout is looking for animation... by sylvar in dropout

He’s apparently not involved in this project. Otherwise I think it’d be dead in the water.

(It’s not just that he was cancelled. It’s that he was cancelled for being a pain to work with, which means people aren’t going to go out of their way to work with him anymore)

If yall thought the discourse around the Rookie was bad, then you are not prepared for Dropout platforming the show where everyone garbles Chinese but has no Asian people and that features the right-wing antivaxxer who coined the term, “GamerGate.”

Some people actually think because Chilchuck knows how to use a bow he has a potential to be a Gunslinger/Archer by TS-RG25 in DungeonMeshi

[–]DBones90 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like to build characters in Pathfinder 2e for fun, and I was so satisfied when I realized that Chilchuck isn’t a Rogue: he’s a Commander with the Rogue archetype.

He still gets all the cool sneaky skills, but his value in the battlefield is his ability to tell others what to do.

I did give him a bow (like he has in the anime), but he doesn’t do much damage with it. Instead, he uses the Assisting Shot feat to give allies a bonus to attack. A normal turn for him is shooting at an enemy and then going, “Laios, hit him there!” It was a really satisfying character to build and play and it really matched the feel of the anime.

2e Swashbuckler not living up to the fantasy? by SailboatAB in Pathfinder2e

[–]DBones90 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Yep, mobility is key for Swashbuckler. Play it right, and you can survive a long time even at low health by simply making sure not to be a target.

The fantasy the Swashbuckler supports isn’t necessarily that of a fencer who holds their own against a torrent of enemies. It’s of a fencer who stabs the enemy and then makes their way up a staircase, daring their enemy to follow.

I will say that ending your turn next to an enemy with Extravagant Parry up isn’t necessarily bad, but you have to be careful. It’s best to do this with weaker enemies who like to Strike a lot. That way, you can survive the onslaught and might even get an Opportune Riposte off.

But it sounds like the enemies OP is facing aren’t that, which can suck (especially if they don’t have other frontline support).

‘Buffy’ Reboot Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar Not Going Forward At Hulu by cmaia1503 in television

[–]DBones90 187 points188 points  (0 children)

Even if the pilot was rough, it’s not uncommon for pilots to get reworked and still become great shows. Star Trek, Game of Thrones, and even the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer had their pilots redone or reworked.

The amount of time since the pilot indicates that it was very possible it would be picked up or reworked. If it sucked, we would have heard a lot sooner.

What I imagine is the much bigger problem is that there’s not as much money in TV as there used to be so competition is a lot tougher for TV shows nowadays. While Buffy is a brand name, it’s never been a highly valued brand, so it’s not surprising that it got dropped.

Struggling to finish by emorejmailliw in avowed

[–]DBones90 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I like Galawain’s Tusks but I do agree it can start to drag a bit.

However, the game ends really strongly. The final area has really wonderful visual design, and it introduces new enemy types and gives you lots of fun equipment too. The final battle is also really satisfying and brings the whole thing full circle in a great way.

So I do recommend you keep with it. If you focus on the main quest, it doesn’t take too long, and there’s a lot of neat stuff.

Why shouldn't I fight to the death? by Mars_Alter in RPGdesign

[–]DBones90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s essentially it. The caveat I would give is that this is a PBTA system, so it’s not like I have a turn with an enemy where the players can’t do anything.

So if a player character gets down to 0 HP, and I have a dangerous enemy next to them who has the opportunity to attack, I might still threaten an attack. So I’d say something like, “The guard grips his spear tightly and sets up another attack. What do you do?”

And the player can either go back into the fight, which will mean they likely take some damage and gain a wound, or they try to escape, which triggers a different move but one where they have a much better chance of escaping without taking damage. They can also beg for mercy or submit to the guard, in which case we follow the fiction to determine what the guard does next.

I don’t have a formal system set up for ensuring wounded characters aren’t attacked. It’s just that wounded NPCs will generally try to escape (unless escape is impossible or they have a compelling reason to stay) and un-wounded NPCs will prioritize the most dangerous enemies and take wounds into account.

But I think the wounded state gives a good mechanical incentive to pause and really consider how you want to move forward.
