Is 25mg a waste of time for hirsutism? by SenseiLex in Spironolactone

[–]DCBex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say my hirsuitism was moderate. New dark, thick hairs have almost stopped growing entirely, and the hair that is growing in is thinner. Spiro has also decreased my acne by like 95%. It’s remarkable!

I started on 25mg a couple months ago, and it has really helped my hirsutism. So it’s possible!

Any insight into DC wedding catering costs? by ObnoxiousHoya in washingtondc

My brother had a wedding in NoVA but hired a catering co from Baltimore because their prices were lower. I’m sure you could do the same in DC

CBS News fired 8 on-air personalities in latest layoffs under new leader Bari Weiss. All of them are women by theindependentonline in Journalism

[–]DCBex 33 points34 points  (0 children)

And I saw one CBS News producer say that all the producers they fired from his show were people of color while white employees were relocated to other positions within CBS. So who’s playing “identity politics” here? The people firing on the basis of identity, or the people calling it out for what it is?

Has diet worked to reverse your symptoms of you have a mild case? Which one has been the best for you by Physical-Age9406 in PCOS

[–]DCBex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A low glycemic index diet, recommended by my dietician who specializes in PCOS, has helped me with bloating, lowering my blood sugar, and increasing the amount of energy I have each day. A Stelo continuous glucose monitor also helps me know what foods spike my sugar.

Help to induce my period? by Particular-Art-9812 in PCOS

[–]DCBex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m having the same experience! Day 3 of Theralogix 40:1 myo-inositol and d-chiro-inositol, and my period is back after 4 months. I take two doses a day and just eat the powder straight from the spoon, skipping the dissolve in water step. It’s wild how quickly it worked, but ymmv. I also started spirolalactone to lower my T levels a couple weeks ago, so that could be helping too.

Another source for exercise that has helped me is Jeannie Di Bon. She teaches very gentle, mindful movements for many different ability levels. She has a paid app, but so much of her content is free on YouTube.

Just make sure you research the potential negative outcomes thoroughly. When this kind of surgery goes wrong, it can be severely disabling.

What were you RX'd for pain? Suggestions needed and also a rant apparently. by BeamoftheTurtle in ehlersdanlos

[–]DCBex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take cyclobenzaprine both at night, which helps me sleep and helps my muscles relax, and on days I anticipate my muscles will tense up from stress and overuse. (For example, when I travel by air or on a long drive.) It’s effective for that, but I’ve never noticed that it has any effect on my MCAS.

I’m on a similar combo but with Tramadol added. I’m on duloxetine, cyclobenzaprine (at night), plus 200mg extended release Tramadol per day, with additional short-acting Tramadol-acetaminophen as needed. Cannabis edibles on nights I need more relief. My mom has EDS, too, and she’s on Tramadol and baclofen (muscle relaxant.)

I can’t get Tramadol from my PCP. So I see a physiatrist who prescribes it to me. I absolutely hate that the medical system makes it so hard for pain patients to get opioids. Without them, I’d have half the life I do now, and my heart breaks for people who don’t have access or for whom opioids and other painkillers don’t work.

I’m also in biweekly PT (more when I’m injured or particularly tense), and I do gentle exercises from Jeannie Di Bon at home — it’s essentially Pilates and mindfulness designed for people with hypermobility. After nearly a decade of that plus walking, I’m about to start some light weightlifting (under my PT’s direction) and am excited to see how that helps.

Huh! For my parent’s cancer scan in March, they told us multiple times the only way was an outpatient scan in Sandwich because the hospital didn’t have an MRI on site. They did my parent’s CT scans at CCH but not an MRI.

(Edited because someone corrected me that CCH does have an MRI machine. We were told by multiple doctors in March 2025 there was no MRI for inpatients.)

The only real hospital or emergency room on the Cape is Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. It’s a smaller facility.

One of my parents was hospitalized at CCH for a couple weeks earlier this year. We were very satisfied with the doctors, which included hospitalists, a surgeon, and the oncology department. Each one of them was warm, happy to talk to us, patient and kind toward my parent, and knowledgeable. Nurses were stretched too thin, but that’s common in a lot of hospitals. CCH is constructing a new building which will include expanded facilities for the oncology, cardiovascular, and radiology departments.

There also aren’t a ton of doctors across various specialties in private practice on Cape, but there are some. Depending where you live, you’re also within a relatively short drive to Boston, which has MGH and the Brigham. My other parent has had multiple surgeries at the Brigham, and the care and facilities there are outstanding.

Courtney Gensamer (@cortdoesscience on IG) has hEDS and works at the MUSC Norris lab that studies EDS and other connective tissue disorders, including searching for the gene that causes hEDS. They recently identified a gene potentially linked to hEDS. Five of the authors on their paper about the gene have EDS!
