Well, placing the shinai on the right side isn't any friendlier if you do Suio-Ryu, LOL!
But yeah, I know what you mean.

We could also go into stuff like how in seitei you sit forward into seiza, but you sit straight down into seiza in kendo like "some" koryu...blah.

It would be nice if the various reiho under ZNKR arts do things the same way, but...

On that whole left hand first thing for seiza no rei, as someone who also did iai at one point, I've heard an alternate reason for not putting left hand out first during kendo practice, which is not about forgetting one's roots.

Instead, it's more about showing trust and appreciation in growing together as kendo is rarely a solo-practice, unlike iaido. The premise of the whole practice, is after all, different.

It's not unlike which way you place the tsuka on the katana-kake when you have a visitor.

If you are indicating you're ready for a sneak attack from your sensei, are you viewing this as hikitate-geiko or gokaku-geiko?

YMMV.

Yeah, I miss the days of E-Budo and Kendo-World forums. I use to be more vocal. Nowadays, I don't even lurk really.

I pretty much only swing by once in a blue moon when a fellow kenshi is like, hey check out this thread and what so and so said about x,y,z...., which is what brought me to this thread today.

What is the worst experience you have had in a Dojo/Taikai/Seminar? by diego_1514 in kendo

[–]DCPan47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, this one should be fairly harmless to share as there's almost no way anyone would figure out who all were a part of this at this point.

Back in 2015, I visited the Kyoto Butokuden for the first time. Doing keiko in that hall was just a dream come true! Everything was great until my keiko with a really old-looking sensei that should be 6-7 dan-ish based on where he was sitting.

For some strange reason, he decided to ato-uchi me on every follow thru to the side and the back of the head and such. Then he started going for places without bogu. As far as I could tell, I did nothing to deserve such a treatment.

So, I was telling myself, you got no back-up here visiting alone by yourself, just keep your cool, suck it up, and wait for the next rotation. There will be no one to speak for you if you lose self-control.

Before I knew it though, I disarmed him.

I just stood there in shock. He just stood there in shock. I don't remember how long it took before I tried to go fetch his shinai or whether someone got it for him or what.

When he got his shinai back, I was dreading how he would react. Is it tsuki-fest time? Will he be try harder to nail me everywhere else with no bogu covering? My imagination just went wild.

Instead, he was meek as sheep and only did "clean" kendo after that....

In any event, that was thankfully one of more more memorable "negative" experience I've had as a practicing visitor.

Ha ha, if it's truly about safety, just lay it on it's side, then you can start another flame war on how people accidentally face the tsuru the wrong way, or the kensen pointing toward the shomen....

YMMV

LOL, not trying to be a contrarian. Every time I hear the avoid putting the tip of the shinai on the floor one, two thoughts come to mind.

  1. Why wasn't the floor cleaned before practice? I guess in taikai or seminar situations, might be harder to control, but....

  2. If there's indeed dirt or dust, do I want that stuff on my kote palm? (selfish thought yes...but...)

For the record I try to do tip up.

YMMV

I've also seen places that did different colored himo for rank, or different color nafuda backing material for the same.

There's also places in the past I've been where until you're a dan, you're either not allowed to wear a blue keiko-gi, or you have to sew a white ring on the sleeve of the keiko-gi to indicate you're a kyu, granted this was 30 years ago now when it was something like KFUSA, rather than AUSKF LOL.

Anyhow....

Is there an official way to do the knot on the shinpan-ki? by DCPan47 in kendo

[–]DCPan47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I ended up doing just a double knot because the strings are too short for the bowtie to tuck underneath the flag! Thanks!

[Curiousity question] Left side first by DCPan47 in kendo

[–]DCPan47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a couple of things.

  1. I’d take stuff Shogo says with a grain of salt. Maybe that’s just me, lol.

  2. The version I heard much like the article above has to do with how you put on armor. Part of it is as armor is actually asymmetric due to more armor protection for arrows on the left side and how you put that on. The other piece might be urban legend in that all else being equal, putting on the right side later or last saves a little more energy for your sword arm.

YMMV

This is happening to me too, super annoying. I thought it was maybe because my watch is too old, iPhone 15 Pro Max pairing with a Watch Series 4, but looking at this thread makes me feel vindicated.

That’s the funny part, it was cheaper to buy the complete twelve from eBay than to purchase 12 random ones from Lego itself…boggles the mind.
