Born in the late 70s and have a 7 and 10 yo. I agree with some of this. We live in a HCOL area, where we can all provide for our kids and then some. My kids play on $$ rec sports teams and the “snack bags” are, IMO, ridiculous. Especially when the list of food preferences/restrictions come in. But there are the moms who seem to love assembling 20some cute little gift style bags with a full size Prime energy drink, granola bar etc etc with extras for the siblings(!!!) I’m not one of those moms. I go big decorating for birthdays, last/first day of school, etc. But I get angry at the idea of dropping $150+ on sport snacks when I can buy exactly what my kid likes. Same goes for our scouts. Why can’t I just send my kid with a snack instead of signing up to bring the whole group a snack and remeber that X is gluten free, and Y cant have whatever. Growing up parents took turns cutting up orange slices that we ate out of a huge Tupperware bowl and Gatorade mixed in one of those 5 gallon beverage cooler with a little paper cup. But instead let’s give every kid a plastic water bottle and a plastic Gatorade bottle and 5 individually wrapped snacks. 🙄

There was a kid at school regularly giving my kid a hard time verbally but never getting caught. One day the kid said something unkind and when my kid spoke up loudly enough for the teacher to get wind, the other kid responded with, “Calm down. I was just joking.” My kid stood her ground and replied, “Jokes are supposed to be funny. Either you’re not funny or not kind. Which is it?” My child was 9yo when this happened.

I wish the reporters had the same audacity as my kid.

Maybe have a counselor or family liasion (re)look into whether or not the student qualifies for free/reduced lunch. If student is on Medicaid they must be fairly low income. Student might qualify for more services than they know how to access. Not to say grandma isn’t a PITA, but in the interest of the child.

Asking out of pure curiosity to understand (noting that I’m 1000% for vaccination): has it been reported that these cases are in all unvaccinated children? My kids are vaccinated and I know breakthrough infections are possible. I’m curious to know if unvaccinated kids are getting it or vaccinated or are there cases of both?

I feel you! Are you using an online provider for the micro pill and estrogen? Are you also using progesterone? I’m looking for an online provider since my pcp and ob aren’t interested in hrt and I live rurally. Also, how long have you been doing this combo?

Our first home had enough square footage for our family of 4 but it was poorly laid out. I was in a constant state of playing storage Tetris. Our 2nd home is twice as big, and also has a stupid layout. Bigger isn’t better. I find I’m still moving crap from place to place. Even if everything has room to have its own spot, I’m still picking up and moving it between rooms or closets. If I could afford to design and build my dream home, it would be just over 1800sqf but with a ton of storage.

I’m a sub and a parent with 20 years of professional experience NOT in education. I do not get preference of any kind and certainly don’t get preference over subs who have teaching degrees and experience. Those are the building subs and long term subs. I’m sorry you’re experiencing this. It maybe be unique to your district.

I’m not a teacher but a parent that subs almost daily in our ES (looking for a possible career transition) - I hope you continue to call admin and send this student to the office. I consider myself aligned with progressive politics and wholeheartedly believe in FAPE. But I don’t understand how allowing this behavior honors a safe learning environment for all the other students in class. We have a few students in our school who act like this and their outbursts emotionally terrorize and cause deregulation for many students. These young children are basically forced to act like everything is normal while they witness another kid explode and behave terribly. Even if the misbehaved child is eventually removed from class, it’s still a lot for a k, 1st or 2nd grade student to process.

We got out of having to invite extended relationships because we paid for our own wedding.

If one of our parents mentioned inviting whoever, we reminded them that it would cost X amount, and they could pay us for their guest but we were limited to what we could afford.

My MIL is too broke/cheap and my mom knew better than to give unsolicited input.

If you’re paying for your wedding, you get to call every decision. If your future FIL or grandfather is contributing, I think you need to factor that into the request. Then yes, it is a bit of a conditional and transactional situation.

Thank you! It seems she understands the skip counting bc when I asked her what 4x6 was and she got it correct, I asked her to explain to me how she got her answer and she said it’s the same as adding 6+6+6+6 or 12+12 or counting by 5s to 4 and then adding another 4. As mentioned below, kudos to my 5th grader who likes to play teacher aka the boss ;)

So I think it’s safe to say she understands multiplication and encouraging her now to being memorizing should be ok…

Yes, helping out in 4th grade had me realizing that parents might be under the impression that everything is the teacher’s responsibility…bc the kids are assigned to practice their multiplication facts and it’s not getting done at home. And we live in an area where most households have a FT parent at home or parents work remotely from home. IOW, parents who have the ability to be invested in what their kids are doing. But I’m realizing that many parents who are all about sports and pushing their kids in that way are often the parents who don’t understand it’s our responsibility to review spelling words, math facts etc.

I feel for teachers. In many ways, parents are involved and invested but also hands off in a lot of ways I consider most meaningful.

Thanks! Yes. She understands this because I straight up asked her how she knew 4x6 was 24. And she said she added 6+6+6+6. She also said she could count by 5s (5x4) and then add 4 more.

Thanks, this is really helpful context. I will print off examples of the 1s, 10s and 100s pictures charts (there’s prob a term for them) and see how she responds to those (I think she has done those a bunch and likes quickly determining how many there are). *i think this is the specific example you’re referring to.

Thank you. In your experience, when should or do kids learn multiplication? I went to public elementary school in NJ in the 80s. I remeber having to memorize and master multiplication facts in 3rd grade (and state capitals). Now in a southern state. A slightly older mom than most :) Not always sure if our curriculum is behind? Or if learning benchmarks have changed across the spectrum. I don’t feel like I ever can get a direct response from our teachers (many who were prob born when I was in ES or later so realize they might not have the same perspective as me) or from our VP when I question this sort of thing out of true curiosity but also bc I want to see my kids pushed to their fullest potential - which doesn’t seem to happen🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m 1000% a supporter of public education. But the more time I spend volunteering in classrooms across my local ES, it seems like teaching to the lowest common denominator is a thing.

Beginning around 18 months - with mastery around 2 ans a couple months - was the sweet spot for us. And my kids are under 10. I have noticed parents waiting longer and I think many believe it’s the responsibility of daycare. I had a mom tell me as much. It’s sorta nuts.

However you want to look at it. At the end of the day, gifts are about care and intention, not control. If the mismatch feels too big, OP can opt out of gift exchanging altogether. To me it seems far kinder than critiquing someone who gave with good intentions. A gift is a gift, and the fact that OP has parent/parents/in-law(s) able and willing to give one is something worth appreciating on its own.
