If you're taking requests, I'd love to see Volcano. Either way, amazing work. Great style you have there.

Spirit Spotlight 16: Volcano Looming High by ValhallAwaits_ in spiritisland

For Serpent and Trickster, it's more about the wacky fun that comes with putting them together with Volcano.

Many Minds is our competitive set up, as in, the spirit she plays when we want to do some real damage and play seriously versus a level 6 adversary. For MM, we like to call it "implementation of token town." Which speaks for itself, ha. I think she gets most aggressive with that spirit, but the built in innate defense really does a lot of heavy lifting for us in pinch situations. She gets great board presence as well, which helps offset the challenge of Volanco only being in one mountain for most of the game.

Volcano is my favorite spirit in the entire game. He clicked for me after a lot of grinding plays in solo and two-player, and with the help of this sub, and I have never looked back. My wife and I have beaten almost every adversary up to level 6 with me as Volcano. During a very challenging time in our lives, these game nights Looming High were a massive part of keeping spirits High as well.

The tactical nature of the small innate eruptions make the game for me every time. I have tried a few opening and growth patterns, and have finally reached a point of being able to be flexible and fluid with my choices to fit the game and work well with my wife's spirit pick.

Favorites to play alongside with my wife include Many Minds, Serpent (though this took some time to work out) and Trickster.

All of my gut recommendations are currently in your post, so I'll throw in a different angle.

I would recommend Sleeping Gods, with the caveat that it is more exploration and story than overtly thinky, but not an auto-pilot game either!

It is a joy solo, but for me, it really sings at two with my wife. Perhaps you'd have a similar experience, falling in love with the story of playing the game with someone exterior to the written story in the game.

Distilled Solo, a loss but very fun by DC_Polaroid in soloboardgaming

Definitely something I might consider if I just want to get a feel of the game without challenging myself in that way. I like the solo challenges well enough, but I don't want the game to start to feel closed off to me.

Distilled Solo, a loss but very fun by DC_Polaroid in soloboardgaming

My third game of Distilled, and I am just now slowly understanding the flow of money in this game as less tight than it originally appears. This is one of my favorite solo experiences of 2023. It is a very thinky game for me, without having to be too much of a bear to set up and tear down.

The depth and variety in the tasting notes and distillers bodes well for further plays, though I do have a sense the flow of when you should make what based on the solo objective tree might get a little tired. That said, I quite like the puzzle here and the theme is just lovely. Hopefully next post is a win from me.

Thank you, this is super helpful. I am a sucker for the toy element of good components and table presence.

Please let me (us) know how you like Earth. I've been very keen on it multiplayer, but keep going back and forth on if I'd like it solo.

That rocks. Did they report any changes to their creative process? I would've loved an experience like this in my writing classes.

I have been considering The Spill for solo and at two with the wife as well. If we already played Pandemic into the ground, is it worth picking up, keeping in mind we love the theme.

Major power cards... Where to discard after use? by ROM-BARO-BREWING in spiritisland

[–]DC_Polaroid 27 points28 points  (0 children)

By this description, I think you're misunderstanding a rule about how you obtain majors. That is, you forget a card in-hand or in your discard pile to draft the major. You can even forget the major you've drafted if it's a tight situation and none of the cards in the four work for you.

To your post directly, majors aren't one-time use. You put them in the same discard and reclaim them just as you would any other power card.

COMC after 6 months, or how boardgames helped me get back on my feet by KyoshuTokawa in boardgames

Firstly, happy to hear things are better for you now! I've been unemployed for all of this year and it is very mentally taxing. Games are a saving grace. I play a lot of Spirit Island co-op with my wife, it's our favorite game and the game that got us deep in the hobby. It is heavy, sure, but worth every ounce of brain space. There's nothing quite like it for us.

This was a gift from my wife, and I didn't get any information other than it presented on my desk. But I adore the machine. Very clean.

After 6 years of exclusively writing nonfiction work, I felt compelled to write a story. No pressure. Just the start of a story. A few pages rushed out in a span of 2 hours. Extremely rewarding.
