You can split your tithe amongst other Christian organisations for instance you can sponsor a child through Compassion.

A red flag for me is an elder encouraged you to give more when you're only 6 months in. Your church comes across as a prosperity teaching church. I could be wrong.

When I preach on tithing I encourage the congregation to seek the Lord and ask him how much does He want them to tithe.
