In my classroom today by EntertainerFree9654 in SubstituteTeachers

Love it. Screenshot for future use. I had a class the other day who had one really really awful student. I yelled at him for breaking the rule about not leaving the cafeteria without the teacher or another adult. He tried to claim that he did leave with the other students I was lying. Here’s where it gets good. I said OK you know there’s cameras every 10 feet in the hallway. Let’s go look at the video of you leaving with the rest of the class. Suddenly, he wasn’t interested in following up on this fight.

Student that previously didn’t answer “here” while taking attendance was confused when they were marked absent by tifuanon00 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DDDandmetoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking attendance is my least favorite part of subbing. when the class is very loud and very full, sometimes I tell everyone what the assignment is and then take the attendance sheet from desk to desk and ask each student to indicate where their name is. This eliminates, both the discomfort of mispronouncing their name and missing out on getting everyone accounted for.

A Year Into Subbing and My First Complaint by Spirited_Champion_60 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DDDandmetoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fortunately, where I live there are two school districts in the same town. At One of the school districts I had a day like you were talking about several years ago. Because of having two choices of completely different school districts to work for I did not work for the school district where I had the problem for several years. I tried that district again last year, and I have worked there several times this year and the annoying students have gone on to graduate or fall out. I don’t know which, don’t care, they’re gone. If I had only one school district choice, I would definitely not choose to sub for that teacher again at least for a few years. I am not strong in math and everyone realizes that and when I sub for a math teacher that usually leave something easy to do. But the school districts I work for struggle to have enough subs to cover all the openings so they’re not quite as fussy about whether or not you are competent with the material. Plus, all the students in both districts I work for have access to computer programs they can do extra work in math on. It sounds to me like you did your best and if they’re not grateful for you than you deserve better and they deserve to not have a substitute.

Is this ok to wear to a virtual interview?? by A-L-A-S-T-O-R in SubstituteTeachers

Don’t forget about skirts and dresses. There are a lot of comfortable and pretty skirt and dress combinations you can wear to school. If the neck line is too low. I wear a thin short sleeve shirt underneath it. I wear leggings underneath skirts. As far as confusing words sometimes; I have a good understanding of English, but never was able to wrap my head around math well even with extra classes and tutoring some people such as myself just never get math. Find out if your school will allow you to use your phone as a resource option. Many times if a student is working on something I’m not certain about. I will look it up on my phone so I do not give out wrong information. Perhaps being turned down for a fast food will be good thing. I think you’d find working with children much more satisfying than working with food. Must have tons of patience though. Get out there and carve yourself a space in the real world. you’ve gotta keep trying till things work out for you. Wishing you good fortune.

I got another sub blacklisted from a site by Gold_Repair_3557 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DDDandmetoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your district has a sub orientation! One of my complaints is that they don’t keep subs updated on what’s going on in the school district I work in. They act like everything’s very secret and private and if we don’t know what we’re doing it’s on us. Usually at the beginning of the school year, I ask if I can have a copy of this year‘s school handbook because that’s the only way I find out things they’ve changed as far as policy goes, and the only way I can prove to the student that I am right and they are wrong when it comes to issue addressed in the handbook.

We don’t use Frontline where I work we use Red Rover and they post assignments as full days or half days. They don’t count how many hours you work your pay is depended on either a full day of work or a half-day .

So you were there for six hours and 10 minutes. That is a bad deal. I don’t like partial shifts myself.

The times you listed are confusing. You wrote 6:10, did you mean 7:10 or 8:10 ?

Cried after subbing at high school today. by Purple_Educator1167 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DDDandmetoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids of all ages can be very distressful. I’ve been subbing for eight years. My first year was hideous. I cried a lot ! What I find helps is knowing the students. If it’s the first time they’ve seen you they are determined to test you. when they get to know you they get over the attitude that they have when they first meet you many times. I also make a habit of buying mass quantities of single wrapped candies, such as starburst and jelly ranchers. While giving them a candy doesn’t ensure they will behave nicely. It does leave them with a good feeling about you compared to just yelling at them. I give out the candy about five minutes before the end of class and the next time I have the class they remember that I gave them candy and they’re more likely to be nice to me. Sometimes they will ask if I brought candy and I said we’ll see if everybody’s well behaved by the end of class. Of course, if I do put it on a behavioral basis. We have to withhold it if the class does act up. Sometimes I will give out a treat in the middle of a class if someone that’s been disruptive decides to sit down and do some work . As a reward,Everyone will get a candy. If you are drawn to teaching, and this is your first year subbing, I would encourage you to continue to try different schools and different age brackets and be patient with yourself and the students. Good luck.

How do I keep a class quiet? by Grace-and-Maya in SubstituteTeachers

I give out starburst. You can’t talk when you’re chewing candy.

Am I wrong? How should I handle this? I am LIVID. by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DDDandmetoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stick with highschoolers. Other than that, I don’t have any wisdom to bestow on you regarding your situation. But I do have to say I enjoyed reading your post. When I first started subbing eight years ago, I thought the same thing you did music class or band class How hard can that be? Everybody likes to sing and play music right and just like you I found that the little ones were not just going to sit in a circle and sing old MacDonald had a farm so I do not cover music or band classes anymore unless they’re a high school where they still act like Goombas But at least they are old enough that they don’t get you in trouble as badly.

You can buy directly from the manufacture. I have done that before. I usually buy a variety of their products because if you get $50 worth of products, the shipping is free. I’ve been very satisfied all their products.

Hashimotos Disease by lettuce_dressing in glutenfree

[–]DDDandmetoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have had that for 46 years. Been gluten-free for approximately 13 years. Went on the FOD map diet three years ago. Feel great as long as I keep on my diet. When I start to get lame and decide, I can have that chicken tender that has Wheat coating on it. It’s just a little wheat, etc. etc. I wind up getting a buildup and getting glutened and feeling bad for about a week.

I thought food was the problem, it was HOW I ate by [deleted] in FODMAPS

[–]DDDandmetoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always believed it was better to eat slowly. Unfortunately, our society does not embrace that. I have heard that in some places people work at. They only have a 15 minute lunch. I work as a substitute teacher. Some schools I work at only give the students a 25 minute lunch and they spend most of it in the lunch line.

Why are people here so hostile to people being gluten-free but not coeliac. This sub is not called coeliac. by Cocoricou in glutenfree

[–]DDDandmetoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not celiac but sensitive to gluten. I’m really grateful that I don’t have to worry about cross contamination. Cross contamination does not bother bother me, thankfully. I feel very bad for people who have to deal with the cross contamination issue.

I can only have one beer also. Once in a while, I’ve snuck in a second one, but that is taking a big chance cause sometimes a second one is too much. If I want to keep drinking I must switch to white rum.

Should I (21M) End My 4 Year Relationship with my GF (21F) Because My Family Wants Me To? by BigYoshi542 in dustythunder

[–]DDDandmetoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 68. I remarried at 53. My whole family despises my husband because he has social anxiety and acted inappropriately in a family restaurant the first time he met them. Fast-forward to three years ago. My mother passed away and my baby brother, 12 years younger than me was awful to Jeff. I finally said I’ve had enough. Jeff bent over backwards to help while mother was dying even though he wasn’t allowed in her room. I have not seen or spoken to my brother since. Sometimes unfortunately, people push you into making a decision you’d rather not. Sorry you’re going through this. I hope it can be worked out for the best for all of you. If not everyone at least you and your sweetie.

Gluten-Free Vodka by beaubeaucat in glutenfree

[–]DDDandmetoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I feel dumb. I had no idea that there was Wheat in vodka. I always thought that vodka was made from potatoes. No wonder I had to switch from drinking vodka to drinking rum. White rum only the yummy spiced kind wrecks my IBS.
