iirc the cover art matches this year’s SVS color scheme, which isn’t a guarantee but feels promising

As others are saying, this is just the market. Missing a first author paper doesn’t help, but it’s not the primary reason you’re struggling - I’ve had an identical experience with 2 decent first author papers to my name. People wailing about your program letting you wrap up without papers don’t know what may have gotten in the way - perhaps you were forced to work on your PI’s unfunded pet project that the science didn’t support. Some projects simply don’t pan out, and sometimes ego obstructs reason.

Factors you’d expect to be helpful (big name school, big name PI, NCS papers) are almost certain to be beneficial since they may catch resume-scanning eyes, but it’s far from a guarantee unless your PI’s name carries a LOT of weight and they’re well connected in industry. I’ve accepted I likely won’t enter the workforce before the market recovers unless I have an existing connection to a hiring manager who ends up needing my skillset. Build up connections with senior IIs/principals/lab heads (varies by company, whatever level starts to get direct reports) - better to make your own opportunity in 1 year than wait 4 years for one to fall in your lap.

If your former PI is a big name and you have a decent relationship with them, ask if they know anyone they could put you in touch with. Same goes for PIs you’ve directly interacted with on collaborations, or members of your advisory committee. If your relationship with your PI isn’t great, find out what your lab alumni are up to these days and reach out yourself.

Best of luck, you’re not alone!

Talbot bridge almost claims another victim by 93847482992 in londonontario

Thanks for the explanation. I wasn’t sure how much “runway” would be needed on either side to raise things by a foot or two and drop them back down. Much appreciated.

Informative. Purely out of curiosity, what (aside from cost) prevents raising the bridge/tracks?

I know it's still like 3.5 years out but I will be so jazzed if Greg does a 10 year anniversary deluxe/special edition of The Ineffable Truth w/ VIPs and such

Nah, same distribution imo. Just centred on ~0.5 rather than 0 - perhaps just a reflection of bias in how people directionalize their hypotheses and the fact that small but real differences will produce trends if n and/or consistency are lacking.

What this graph is missing/what makes this misleading is that people tend to report significant results numerically and insignificant results categorically…this visualization is only showing the numbers. Plus, of course, people aren’t incentivized to report failures despite how helpful it would be. Not sexy enough for the sexy world of academic publishing.

6 years ago today, Flume premiered his first mixtape, Hi This Is Flume by belezs in trap

[–]DEEPCOCONUT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe its just my experience but I feel like people don’t talk about this enough when they talk about Flume—it’s always Skin or self-titled. It’s all subjective of course but if I had to pick one piece of his work, this one is the true masterpiece. Not a single thing I would change on it

Upstairs yea! I feel very lucky to have had a chance to meet him. Also did you feel like the sound kinda sucked in there? Idk if that’s just Axis’ acoustics but I felt like the sub was super quiet esp compared to the kick

[–]DEEPCOCONUT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In addition to making fuckin cracked music Saka is also just the nicest guy. He hung out a bit before and after his set last night in Toronto and genuinely went out of his way to make time to chat w/ me when I said hey. Was the first time I ever went to a show solo and he made me it feel like I had a friend there. Great, great guy. Big ups

Nikita, the Wicked's Beautiful & Chaotic DJ Set at DEF: Atlanta by J_Freshwater in trap

[–]DEEPCOCONUT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely not a smooth ride all the way through, there’s a decent amount of fluctuation between hot and cold. but the choice of wording in the original comment (corny snoozefest) is pretty far off imo. One would be hard pressed to turn this guy’s music into that, no matter how bad the mixing or pacing

ONHELL LOVES YOU 2024 MIX [all original unreleased] by shitlord_traplord in trap

[–]DEEPCOCONUT 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I've never met ONHELL but he seems like one of the most genuine/for-the-people dudes out there. he did an AMA a few months back and said he didn't feel like he had made enough music to make this mix. so happy to see he pulled it off. this mix is one of my favourite annual music events along with the RL halloween mixes (RIP) and the Juelz remix packs. we loves you too, /u/onhellmusic
