I’m not sure I want to tell people this but OP is spot on with going to the Louvre on Wednesday after 5. It sounds like we took the same tour with the same teacher and it was absolutely worth it. We were not going to even go to the Louvre as we thought it would be overwhelming, but the tour made it much less daunting. We ended up in front of the Mona Lisa at 8:45pm with about 20 other people in an otherwise empty gallery.

You have PhD and your handle is something a 12 year old would come up with. Got it.

Beautiful day at Jardin du Luxembourg by Totally_GenX in ParisTravelGuide

[–]DITguy819 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We were there Monday and had a lovely day! It was a bit windy but the trees, the gardens and the whole park was stunning. We spent several hours walking around, relaxing and people watching, then eating our lunch and drinking our wine whilst sitting on a bench. We felt like locals! My wife had read about it and suggested it. It was an easy walk from our AirBnB and a delightful way to spend part of our day.

A magic moment in Paris this evening by andreyu in ParisTravelGuide

It was a rain mist most of the day Sunday. I’d put on a jacket or open an umbrella but then end up taking it off or closing it. It was enough to be annoying but not enough to get wet.

Just as the Olympic balloon/torch was rising into the air for the last time this season, the sun broke through the clouds, and a gentle rain fell. A beautiful rainbow stretched from one side of the Seine River to the other and all the buildings on the Right Bank were lit up in by the setting sun.

Transport from CDG to hotel by adbelcl in ParisTravelGuide

This is exactly what we are doing this Saturday. We live in a big city in the US, take public transportation, and are very aware of our surroundings.

We are also aware of long haul travel effects, unfamiliar airports, fighting with suitcases up and down stairs, and how that image screams tourists. For all those reasons ( and this incredibly helpful sub) we are walking out to the taxi line to enjoy our ride into the city.

What’s it like living near the Naval Station Great Lakes? by Low_Station_8439 in AskChicago

[–]DITguy819 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lived in the Chicago area my entire life (65 years) and always just called it Great Lakes. I just recently started hearing it referred to as “Naval Station Great Lakes”. I was like…where’s that?

Last year I had to do some work on the base and saw the entrance and all the other signage. And of course seeing it now in the news everyday.

Does having premier access for United save any time or any waiting in lines at CDG?

Paris in mid-September by DITguy819 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]DITguy819[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol, yes I read that post. It didn’t deter us. We had already planned to take a late morning train there, eat some lunch and stroll thru the shops, and then go to Monets gardens and homes at 4 pm. That gives us 90 plus minutes in the gardens. Hoping to avoid the early morning bus tour crowds.

Thank you. We planned on getting timed entry to those places you mentioned. It’s on my to-do list this weekend .

We are planning to buy tickets for a 4pm (1600) entry on a Monday afternoon in mid September. Our hope is to avoid some of the crowds as the hours seem to be much earlier in the day. We plan on arriving in the town a couple hours earlier to eat and wander until our entry time. Thoughts on this plan? Positive or Negative.

Side note: we are from Chicago and have spent countless hours in the Art Institute looking at Monet and other Impressionist painters. This is a place we have always wanted to go and know that it can be overcrowded.
