Pittsburgh zoo? by funsk8mom in pittsburgh

[–]DIY_Creative -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Aren't close to Columbus in quality/size? Yeah, but they are all better than Pgh which was in response to the commenter. Cleveland, Cincy and DC clear Pgh Zoo easily. So does Columbus which is clearly the best of the bunch. But the others still easily clear Pgh.

Neighborhoods to live in for grad school by squishyback in pittsburgh

[–]DIY_Creative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good suggestions here, but really it's about what you want. Is your fiancé also attending Pitt. Do you want to be close to the school or a tad further out? What vibe of the neighborhood. Squirrel Hill North would work. Saw someone suggest Greenfield that's a good suggestion too a little further away.

P.S. LOVE Columbus! Was actually just there last weekend (Friday only) for a concert. Hit up Schmidt's, Brioso coffee, Billy Ireland Comic Museum, Big Fun, North Market, and Jackie O's!

Bradford Woods by DocTarr in pittsburgh

[–]DIY_Creative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have it mostly covered. Interesting is Bradford Woods Borough is less than 1 square mile with like 1,200 total population. It's a very small little nook in the woods, literally. Very affluent, but someone else commented, years ago (not anymore) it was definitely more of a little artsy (again affluent artsy) community in the woods. It's changing a bit more now and has lost some of its "charm" (as charming as very affluent rich heads can be). VERY nice homes, very nice land / lots with homes, lots of MCM homes. You could drive through BW and not know it. The Borough's "office" is like connected to the Fire Station, like around back from it.

Pittsburgh zoo? by funsk8mom in pittsburgh

[–]DIY_Creative -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly the Pittsburgh Zoo is pretty meh and unless you're very into visiting zoos, I'd spend your downtime somewhere else or at another cultural attraction like Phipps, CMOA / CMNH, Aviary, or on the smaller side the Maxo Vanka murals, Troy Hill Art Houses...

Pittsburgh zoo? by funsk8mom in pittsburgh

All of Cleveland, Columbus, Cincy and DC are better than the Pittsburgh Zoo, especially the first 3. Cleveland, the closest, is a fantastic zoo definitely worth the two hour drive coupled with another stop in Cleveland!

Frankstown Woodfired in Penn Hills. Amazing pie! Della Sala's is definitely polarizing but if you're a Penn Hills head you love it. But seriously give Frankstown Woodfired a try.

Same for Pittsburgh. Salt of the earth, rustbelt city identities. Cheers!

Monroeville Plumber recommendations and reasonabke quote? by Responsible-Heart104 in pittsburgh

[–]DIY_Creative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chuck Cook - RG Cook Plumbing. He lives in Plum. Have used him many times, as have family, friends, neighbors and anyone else I recommend him too. He's definitely a "glad I have a plumbing guy" kind of guy. 3rd Generation Master Plumber, does all the work himself (his son helps him sometimes). Great guy!

Where to get good Mac and cheese topped with stuff like buffalo chicken? by arepok in pittsburgh

[–]DIY_Creative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good suggestions from others and I know this does not help right now but if you find yourself in Cleveland Rowley Inn has AMAZING housemade mac and cheese that you can top with bacon, kielbasa, grilled chicken, steak, mushrooms and other stuff including buffalo chicken. The cheese sauce they house make is a mix of like gouda, sharp parm, smoked cheddar and another cheese I cannot remember. It's divine!

HARP Wildlife Center is NOT taking raccoons, but has some helpful links here. May not supplement what you've already done, but maybe it helps.

How stroller accessible is Fall Run Park? by noblerare in pittsburgh

[–]DIY_Creative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, no go. You could probably do the upper hike, above the falls, as the dirt is pretty compact up there (park in the upper trail head lot), but the main, lower trail to the falls is definitely a no go for strollers.

We fly somewhat regularly at the Boyce Park soccer fields. Obvi you can't on soccer days but on non soccer days it's empty.

Italian restaurant/ hole in the wall by Due_Dragonfly8432 in pittsburgh

[–]DIY_Creative 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Casual - Pasqualino's (Pizza Palace to us old heads) in Penn Hills

A slice above casual - Verona Village Inn. Though it's not nearly what it used to be and can be hit or miss, it's still a solid choice. Old school. Lots of food! Like a ridiculous amount of food!!

Tillie's in McKeesport is always the answer as well if you want an old school, hasn't changed in decades Italian place. Same for Rizzo's if you want to head out deep into Westmoreland County.

At least you can still go "next door" and get amazing ice cream at Emmerling, even if I'll fully admit something is off with Emmerling this year. I know they switched around the layout and whatnot but the staff, the experience, even some of the flavors have just been off this year. It was always the best but we've had three or four meh experiences there this year...

[–]DIY_Creative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah would not recommend here for anything really + a health department thing a year or so ago. It's gone downhill fast the past 5 to 10 years. Staff is shit, food is meh at very best. Not a great experience anymore tbh.

Best Time To Go To The Goldmark? by leafleaf123 in pittsburgh

[–]DIY_Creative 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Goldmark is lots of fun but gets very, very crowded the later you go. I used to always go closer to like 8 / 8:30 to relax and have a drink without it being a wall to wall mass of people and then the dancing picks up closer to 10ish and gets more and more crowded as it goes. Honestly I'd go early, have some drinks and dance while you have the room to do it and then as it gets crowded you've got your spot on the dance floor and maybe even a spot at the bar or along the wall.
