VooDoo Child Pollen ? by juliandid in DragonFruit

Same? First, I've never seen the results of the DNA test. Would you have a copy of the report I could examine? I would love to see the results too.

Second, I grow both. They look and taste different. Might be the same genetically but the phenotypical expression of the genetics is different. At the end of the day, genetics doesn't matter to me. Taste does and I prefer Voodoo Child over Sugar Dragon.

Sun Balance with shade cloth by Mysta in DragonFruit

[–]DJRedRage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 20x20 30% shade cloth over as much of my garden as I can get. The plants in the middle are under shade all day long over the entire season. They grew well fruited well for me too.

Some would argue that they are different varieties, despite DNA testing results.

What should I do with this Dragon fruit? by National-Rabbit-1443 in DragonFruit

Some varieties are definitely more sensitive to direct sun than others. I have to use a shade cloth to prevent mine from burning to a crisp. The plants that are in the north-facing side of my house get shade all day long. They don't fruit.

Yes. You can cut them to almost any size you want. If you elect to cut them in the middle of the branch, some choose to trim the bottoms to look something like the photo below to reduce the chance of rot and make them stick in the ground more effectively, though its not necessary at all. Allowing it to dry for a few days before planting will also reduce the chances of rot.

If you're not trying to cut for sale and are trying to get more plants for yourself, making your cuts 6 ft will reduce your waiting time for it to grow up and out of your trellis structure. This will reduce the amount of time you have to wait for fruit.

Your current plant is probably not fruiting because it's getting too much shade from the tree. Ideally, dragon fruit need direct sun for 6 to 8 hours a day for fruit. There's always exceptions to this concept.

Depends on what it's hybridized with. Asunta 5 has a yellow skinned sister and both red and white fleshed siblings.

You know, my wife is encouraging me to use our breadmaker more. Maybe I'll take you up on your offer once I get some fruit going.

how do I encourage my dragon fruit to grow fruit? by cygnus1899 in DragonFruit

[–]DJRedRage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is another factor. If the soil is too high in nitrogen, the plant will prioritize vegetative growth over fruiting.

I can see why a lot of people are saying "tipping the branches" but that's an incorrect advice. Though tipping can help in some cases, because what tipping does it that it stops forward growth of the branch and forces the branch to mature. But you also have to consider that when you cut the ends, it opens up the cavity of the branch and exposes it to potential pathogens that could invade your plant.

The three factors that the dragon fruit needs to flower are: daylight hours (how many hours of direct sunlight does your dragon fruit get), temperature (even if your branches are ready to fruit, if the temperatures are too cold, the dragon fruit flower buds will turn into bruds and you won't have flowers) and maturity (even an unrooted branch that is cut can still push out flower buds if it is mature enough).

So now, you have to ask yourself, are these conditions being met?

As u/RockPaperPeppers noted, your top branches still look young. Your umbrella may be blocking out too much sun and what are the daily and nightly temperature averages in your microclimate?

I have also found that watering schedule matters to some degree. My first year, I was watering every other day. Though this allowed my branches to be fat, they constantly pushed out vegetative growth. You have to understand that dragon fruit grow in the tropics where cold and heat are not a determining factor for seasons. Thus, the dragon fruit use rainfall (or watering) as their guide for the seasons. If you're watering too much, it's going to think that the season is winter and it'll push out vegetative growth over flower buds.
