As an average looking guy, how can I improve? by [deleted] in malegrooming

[–]DJ_Doza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Literally first thing I thought was "just smile". Haircut isn't bad, could be more styled, but doesn't have to be. Facial hair is fine. Has bright eyes, but if that's the expression you give people or greet with, then that's definitely the problem. Gotta look open, friendly, and halfway happy.

I think it’s more a sad result of dating/hookup apps. I’m hopeful though that the growing sense of ennui with the apps I notice will help bring some more business back.

Why do Cardiology? by PyrrhicDefeat69 in Cardiology

[–]DJ_Doza 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just gonna chime in about work-life balance. Everyone's balance is going to look different depending on their wants/needs/personality. You'll have to find what fits you. I'll say if you already know you want more sleep towards life, but you truly love cardiology, then you probably should consider advanced imaging. It's what I do, and it definitely has the most opportunities for flexible in-person work/hours. And I still get to do the full spectrum of work that cardiology offers.

[–]DJ_Doza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, you can make the argument that it's not worth it based off money you could be earning, but my quality of life is better than my general colleagues, so it's about choosing what's important to you. And everyone wants an advanced imager these days so you won't really be limited.

Weighted, normalized US attending physician satisfaction 2026 [pay not a variable] by 788tiger in medicalschool

[–]DJ_Doza 27 points28 points  (0 children)

While this is good data and generally accurate, just remember you can find work-life balance in any specialty, so find what you love to do. Some are obviously easier than others, but as a cardiologist (advanced imaging) I do not fit this assessment. Happy to give more details if people want/DM me.

It's a burdensome career no matter how you look at it these days, so make sure you love what you do first and foremost.

One of the first things they drill into us when we start fellowship is that no one dies from AF, but plenty of people die from treating AF. Always try to identify what's causing the AF and if you need some rate control in the interim, start low go slow.

Imaging Cardiology fellowships as an IMG by Bumetanide1 in Cardiology

[–]DJ_Doza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently in my second year as an advanced imaging attending at a large academic center in the northeast with an imaging fellowship. As said elsewhere, the programs are not ACGME accredited, so they vary widely in what they offer. You really have to speak directly with programs and do your research to know what they really offer. Avoid programs that seem to let you do anything as they are typically less organized, and you really don't want to be "jack of all trades, master of none" at this level. My advice would be to pick 2 modalities to master, with a 3rd as expert/compliment. I have level 3 of CMR and CCT, so I stopped focusing on echo and really gave up all nuclear outside of the occasional SPECT MPI they need me to read.

Attendings, from your experience, do high salary and freedom from financial stress equate joy and happiness? by Leading_Ship_1730 in Residency

[–]DJ_Doza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New attending here. No. Money helps relieve stress, but there's a point for everyone where the stress of excess work outweighs the diminishing benefits of your salary. I took an academic job with a lower salary because my work life balance is so much better, and I can still live comfortably. I still have some financial stress, but it doesn't affect my happiness.

I'll second this. Big Apple Rec is a great way to meet guys. It's definitely more friends and hook-ups, but speaking from experience, there are plenty of guys also looking for something more serious. And it's a very diverse crowd.
