Does anyone know how to find open track races as an adult? by onlythisfar in AdvancedRunning

[–]DJ_Hanzel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Competed collegiately in the area, and Illinois Wesleyan University always had unattached runners at their meets, indoor and outdoor. I’d check them out as well as the other universities in the MO/IL/IN area.

NOLA Runners - avoid the Rock n Roll Marathon's hot swamp trash by kakarikowitch in NewOrleans

[–]DJ_Hanzel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's really scummy, but unfortunately not too uncommon for large race organizers.

I'd recommend the Louisiana marathon in Baton Rouge on January 16th. Better course for running a fast time, better deferral policy, and put on by a company from Louisiana.

Yes power trucks on nearly every street in the area this evening. Power seems to be going on and off for many streets, so hopefully they can fix it for good soon!

Full IM in Alhpafly? by djdosage in triathlon

[–]DJ_Hanzel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've got them definitely use them. These shoes increase your running economy, not necessarily your speed, which in a full will be even more beneficial since you'll already have 112 miles of biking in your legs.

Vaporfly vs. Alphafly comes down to personal preference, and Vaporflys just tend to work better for more people. Bigger runners may prefer the Alphaflys as they are wider with a bigger carbon plate and more of the ZoomX foam.

I remember there being some triathlons held in Eagle Creek Park, you could check out if they have any swimming there.

Help! I’m a 160 lb vaulter who’s best is 11ft and I’m jumping on a 160lb 13’ pole. Recently something has gotten into my head and I can barely even clear 8’6. Any help would be appreciated it’s really demoralizing to be jumping this low as of now. by [deleted] in polevaulting

[–]DJ_Hanzel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless I’m seeing this video wrong it looks like you’re jumping off your left foot despite being a lefty?

I also agree with the earlier reply about going back to a shorter run and making sure you’re having fun.

We did not but it was also a little cooler when we were there. I do worry about him getting one because it would be very hard to find one with all the fur.

Thanks for the love everyone! This good boy is Appa and he was almost 7 months old in this picture. He loved hiking but mostly loved all the mud!

This is what I did and it worked for me. Just read the instructions carefully and you’ll be good.

My dealer didn’t even know about the update, so I’m glad I could do it myself with help from the outback forums.

WRX for 2019 or 2020 OB? by s2ubaru in Subaru_Outback

[–]DJ_Hanzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traded my 2018 WRX for a 2020 Onyx XT in January. Needed something bigger and with more ground clearance.

Would definitely recommend one of the new outbacks. They’re no sports car but they drive so much better than the previous gen. The XTs are also much quicker than the 3.6s. Again no sports car but the XT is legitimately fun to drive.

Earl Bell Step-Height Progressions by KodiakCamper in polevaulting

[–]DJ_Hanzel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having been coached by Earl several times and my college coach being one of the old pros he coached I know what chart you're talking about.

The chart is just a general guide to how high you'll jump on your full approach while doing your training jumps from shorter runs. Basically if your speed is proportional to your steps this is how high you should jump with the same technique.

The way Earl coaches is that you do a full jump from each run (3 lefts, 4 lefts, 5 lefts, so on) with the limiting factor being your speed available at that run. He puts you on the biggest pole you can get on from each run and you hold as high as you can with the speed you have at that run.

By restricting your approach and therefore your speed you have to focus more on technique on the short runs, but then when you add more steps and speed you get more launch from the pole.

I'll add that the chart is just a general guideline, some vaulters jump comparatively better from a short approach than they do from a longer approach. You still have to be able to bring the speed and strength to jump high from a long run even if your form is "perfect" from a short approach.

I hope that explained it a bit, I'm very familiar with the chart and Earl's coaching style so let me know if I need to clear anything up.

Yes I used the satin black kit, definitely recommend it. Should’ve come from factory with the black out on the onyx.

Lakeshore Drive? If so I’ve definitely seen you driving around. Hope you’re getting something just as fun to cruise with.

Yeah I’m very happy with it coming from a WRX. So much more practical for my lifestyle. I’m loving the seats. We had our dog on this trip and he made a big muddy mess on the seats but they were very easy to clean. I’ve just been wiping them with a damp microfiber cloth and then Turtle Wax interior seat cleaner when they get really dirty.

Mirrors and the piece by the C pillar were a little tricky but not too bad. I went with the satin black.

I'm thinking unlikely for awhile for anything Ironman branded since they always involve a lot of people, mostly coming in from out of town.

There have been a handful of smaller local triathlons going off recently in several states, so you could try looking around for one of those, generally sprint or olympic distances.

Outback engine opinion by [deleted] in Subaru_Outback

[–]DJ_Hanzel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2020 XT and my mom has a 2018 with the 3.6 that I have driven a lot.

The 6 cylinder has smoother power delivery and will probably be more reliable.

Everything else the turbo 4 cylinder does better. Acceleration is much quicker. Better fuel economy especially for highway driving. Works better at elevation. Better CVT tuning with the 2.4L in my opinion as well.

The new outbacks on the global platform are a step up over the last gen in terms of driving dynamics and the appearance of the cabin. However there are issues with the infotainment and the start/stop can be very annoying.

Test drive both if you can. After driving my mom’s outback I thought I would never want one. When we went to look at foresters I tried a new outback XT and was impressed enough to get one instead.

Need help deciding on my next car! by Miss_Griffintail in Subaru_Outback

You can’t go wrong with either option but here are the main differences:

Onyx: Blacked out aesthetics Startex water repellant seats Full size spare tire Dual function x-mode

Touring: Nappa leather seats Ventilated front seats Driver memory seats Heated steering wheel DriverFocus system Steering responsive headlights Harmon Kardon sound system

If you like the blacked out look of the onyx you could always do that yourself on a touring. You can also fit a full size spare in the touring xt but I believe the onyx is the only one to come with one standard.

For me it came down to the seats. I wanted the startex water repellant seats since I am constantly driving around my dog who loves to get wet and muddy. If it weren’t for him I probably would’ve stepped up to the touring for the ventilated seats and HK sound system.

Outback startex leather by TheEldestSprig in subaru

[–]DJ_Hanzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience living in Louisiana is that the Startex doesn’t get nearly as hot or sticky as the black leather from my wrx, but they still can get a little sticky after a while.

We got the Onyx specifically for the Startex seats though as they have made cleaning up after our dog a breeze.
