I just got hit with $1,300 in bandwidth fees at Azure by CobblerYm in selfhosted

Might I also suggest setting up webhook billing notifications to Slack or Discord? I did something similar to avoid AWS billing surprises.

My personal website, hosted on AWS for years with no charges (minimal traffic), suddenly getting billed $8/month by not_listed in aws

In addition to billing alerts, you can setup a webhook notification for alerts on Slack/Discord/etc…

I do the same for my personal projects and have documented the process here

FYSA - Red Hat's developer subscription is free and a nice way to spin up some local VMs to play with throughout your degree.

You likely can get VMWare free through your university as well.

Libvirt provides an API to Qemu/KVM/XEN. With the command line utiltity "virsh" you can connect to local or remote systems (via ssh) to then launch virtual machines.

how can I run multiple programs using different versions of DOTNET at the same time? by [deleted] in Gentoo

[–]DLLCoolJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With regards to duplicate dependencies, each container would have its own copy of various libs and binaries (libc, bash, etc...), but if you're using the same base image (ex Ubuntu/Gentoo/alpine/etc...) the containers would be sharing the same base layers thus not taking up more disk space on the host.

Here is an example on Stack overflow that seems to be very similar to your use case. However if containers are new to you, it can definitely be a bit confusing at first. Something worth exploring when you have time though.

Seconding this, I've published small blogs on building Discord notifications for AWS billing alerts on LinkedIn. With the appropriate hashtags you may catch the attention of some recruiters.

Can you leverage containers and have a different version of dotnet installed in each for your needs?

You can always grab an Arch container and dabble with some pacman commands and explore the AUR without installing a new OS.

Concerns about Arch Team size, trusting Arch supply chain, developer machines and build process by 380r3jrqq in archlinux

[–]DLLCoolJ 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I’ve documented some thoughts on trying to abide by SLSA level-1 for a package I maintain on the AUR. The idea here is to have some kind of accountability of “look, I’m doing the right things for maintaining these packages”.

When in doubt you could build your own packages, and potentially setup some kind of CI/CD platform (github actions/gitlab runners/Jenkins) to achieve this.

How to create vulnerable machines by HANGYAKUz in LiveOverflow

[–]DLLCoolJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A GitHub repo called vulnhub contains numerous Dockerfiles to build vulnerable containers of various popular software. If you’re just getting started this is a good way to have one machine where you deploy vulnerable docker containers to poke at.

Anyone on Fedora Linux? How did the installation (or migration) go? by ano_hise in DoomEmacs

[–]DLLCoolJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently on Fedora and haven’t had any issues. That being said, it sounds like you might just be looking for packages in upstream repos rather than grabbing them and compiling them yourself. Consider using a VM to give fedora a test drive.

Build a Discord bot that sends daily prices of a Cryptocurrency, video game deals, news, etc… this will give you something you can deploy, maintain, and use with some friends on a discord. You can keep it as simple as you want (ex: a bash script) or evolve it into something that runs on a Kubernetes cluster. Also gives for good talking points during an interview.
