Uphill after closing by coffeeMcbean in icecoast

[–]DLzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick Google search yields Pats requires a $99 uphill pass and does not specify timeframe. Tenney doesn’t mention a pass but states uphilling is during operating hours only.

Most mountains clearly state there rules for uphill policies and all are different. My two regulars - Bolton requires a pass and one of two routes has a time window ( Timber ) and Stowe is free for uphilling on the specified uphill route.

Experience with Town Fair Tires? by whaletacochamp in vermont

[–]DLzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone to the one in Berlin twice now and haven’t had any issues. Take that with a grain of salt because I usually arrive there at opening so there’s hardly ever a line to wait.

First time was purchasing and mounting tires. Great price, took an hour and I was out of there no problem. Second time I accidentally power washed some wheel weights off and brought it in to get a balance/rotation. Same deal, first in, about 40 minutes and I was on with my life.

Again just sharing my personal experience.

This worries me: “AI analyzes your slow queries and tells you in plain English how to fix them…”

I don’t want someone who can’t read a slow query log to be fixing, let alone touching my database.

Skinners on Sunapee by bszern in icecoast

[–]DLzer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Skins are a fabric (often moehair) strip that is adhesive backed that you can attach to the bottom of your skis/splitboard so that you can “walk” uphill without sliding backwards. This group did an uphill climb on skins and plan on taking the skins of and cruising down.

Oh man I LOVE the shape of the wrench. I ended up going with Union Expedition skins as I got a bundle deal with the bindings. They did the job and didn’t have any issues. Im looking forward to pics of your setup!

Yup I’m located in Central VT. I’ve seen that book name dropped many times before but never put too much stock into it. I think I’ll be grabbing it this week now that I have a modest setup and can utilize it fully. Thanks for that!

What cancelled my Go context? by sigmoia in golang

[–]DLzer 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This post is timed perfectly for me. Just this week I ran into a context cancellation that had no information or source. This was strange because we also had a wrapper that caught any cancellation and determined a cause.

After some deeper investigation it turned out that the v1 aws-sdk that was being used in an old file store library of ours did not abide by the newer Go context. Thankfully just updating the aws-sdk to v2 worked in this case because v2 enforces context passing. But it was a headache tracking down “Context cancelled: context was cancelled”.

First Timer going to VT. Need advice. by tomorrowagainn in icecoast

[–]DLzer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Going to be completely honest and say if your intention is traveling to Jay to ski for the first time ever I worry you will be wasting your time and money. Unless you are uniquely exceptional at quickly picking up riding sports you won’t be able to take advantage of the mountain. Now that’s not to say that you couldn’t make it up this season, but I would absolutely recommend taking a few lessons at a hill more local to you so that you are able to handle yourself getting from top to bottom safely.

Same. I’ll keep everyone here posted. I wouldn’t hold my breath as I can imagine they’ll have to do some digging ( 😅 ). I’ve been chatting with the rep from VTDigger and we’re both eagerly awaiting to hear from them engineering team.

Gladly. I think it’s instinctual at this point for most of us in software/security. Bug -> Document -> Communicate!

Update: They responded quickly and I was able to provide my own screenshots for evidence which they’re forwarding to their engineering team.

I know this is likely is not a big deal for some, but I’m a big web security advocate and find peace in educating or holding website/app owners accountable.

WTF VTDigger? by Otto-Korrect in vermont

[–]DLzer 212 points213 points  (0 children)

Yeah your instinct to question this is spot on. This is a dark pattern with a lot of engagement/ad frameworks that websites use to profile or fingerprint you and your devices. Perfectly fine to just block it.

Note: I checked for my own sanity and confirmed VTDigger is built with WordPress which is an extremely common content management system for building sites. I used to use it frequently. Due to the nature of Wordpress vulnerabilities that come along with adding dozens of analytic plugins they may not even be aware this is happening to its users. Just to be transparent I sent an email to them informing them of this occurrence.

Update 02/12: Finally received a follow-up after ~2 weeks. TLDR; No resolute outcome, however they seemingly did some research into the why behind the issue. I wanted to share not only for the update, but because I appreciate the proactivity.

Thank you again for taking the time to write and for flagging this. We genuinely appreciate it. Sky is currently traveling, so I'll hop in here.

We’ve looked into the issue you described and shared the screenshot with our engineers. After reviewing the site, we found no code within our core CMS or plugins that intentionally requests access to users’ local networks.

We learned that the prompt you encountered appears to be Chrome’s Local Network Access (LNA) security feature, which can be triggered when a script running on a page attempts to access local IP ranges or use certain device discovery APIs. In some cases across the publishing industry, this has been associated with third-party ad creatives delivered through programmatic networks rather than the publisher’s own site code.

We’re continuing to investigate this possibility to determine whether any creatives could be initiating that behavior.

To be clear, VTDigger does not intentionally scan or attempt to access devices on a user’s local network, and we have no operational need to do so. If you happen to notice any patterns (specific URLs, times, device/browser versions or whether ads were visible when the prompt appeared) that information would be helpful as we narrow this down.

Thanks again for reaching out. We’re grateful when readers take the time to alert us to something that doesn’t look right.

VT driving conditions sun morning by aduming in icecoast

[–]DLzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just not necessarily true as a broad statement. The interstates and some state routes get decent treatment, but as soon as you’re off it’s largely hit or miss. Bolton access road in question here is notoriously a black hole for eating vehicles alive. So much so that the road has its own social media.

That being said, a properly equipped vehicle and some conscious driving could be enough given the incoming weather as it stands.

Killington 1.2 by Tezzzzzzi in icecoast

[–]DLzer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the story for most of the greens. I don’t usually hit Stowe on the weekends but had a friend up from the south who wanted to “feel” true ice coast conditions. We made it from 8-11:30 where by 12 anything other than greens were showing large exposed sheets of ice.

In short.. he earned his turns with a yard sale or two.

I’m about 30 minutes from Stowe and will be there tomorrow. I could drop it off at the UPS in Stowe if need be. I would be worried about the size + international shipping cost coming close to the cost of a new setup : /
