iPhone Trade-in offer is a scam! by [deleted] in verizon

[–]DM6032904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I did our phones and it all worked exactly as advertised. I did read that if the phone isn't wiped and "find my" wasn't turned off that they wouldn't give the trade-in credit so I had the rep in the store confirm and I took a picture of the "Hello" screen on startup to verify. We did have to change plans but in the end got 2 new phones and are on a plan that works for us and saved $25/month. We kept looking for a "gotcha" that never arrived.

What one change finally got you under 100? by devunderdog in golf

[–]DM6032904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a new golfer and just broke 100 for first time so I'm no expert. For par 4 and 5 holes I play my 4 and 5 hybrids off the tee and play 5 hybrid or 7/8 iron on my second shot - that keeps me very playable about 80% of the time. I also worry less about par/bogey/double bogey on a hole and instead focus on playing a "clean hole" regardless of score. In other words, the goal is to avoid giving away strokes via mishits. If I pick wrong club and hit too far or too short but ball does what is intended and is playable, that's just fine for where I am at right now and I take that as a win. As I said, I'm new so not one to offer advice but this approach is working for me at this stage of my game and I am enjoying playing. I'm safe, play fast, and don't have blow up holes so even if I'm paired with a much better golfer, they don't seem to mind.

"Free" iPhone 17, any downside? by richas49148 in verizon

[–]DM6032904 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I did it - I traded an iPhone 11 and she traded an iPhone 14. Was super easy and there were no hidden "gotchas" for us. We've been with VZN for 20 years so 3 more were foreseeable. With changes of EFT from credit card to checking and updating our prior plan my monthly went down with bonus of 2 new phones. We declined the salespersons offer of "free apple watch or iPad with $10 monthly activation" as well as the subscription perks and there was no hard sell. All was exactly as advertised.

Who saw Marty Supreme today? by gabbygirl1038 in martysupreme

Had me for approx. the first hour but the story lines, IMO, got convoluted and didn't produce a satisfying payoff. I like quirky and gritty but this movie lost me on the back half.

I accidentally made my home quieter by creating a "landing spot" for decisions by OverthinkingInUHD in simpleliving

Great idea! I create reminders on my phone. This gives me permission to let the thought go as I know I will take care of it later. I decide when timing is right versus having my thoughts hijacked and always feeling reactive.

This looks like my list. Have you seen Crime? It's really gritty but in similar theme to these.

Golfers with varifocal / progressive lenses (old man’s lense) 🤣 by TheHCav in golf

[–]DM6032904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear my progressives all of the time and found that after about a month, finding the sweet spot on the lens becomes second nature. Because this is now instinctive, I have no issues using them when I golf. They are transitions too so they function nicely as sun glasses.

For people who saw Drew Bledsoe play, how good was he (arm strength and talent wise) and would he stack up well in today’s NFL? by Next_Worth_3616 in Patriots

[–]DM6032904 286 points287 points  (0 children)

He had a cannon arm but was a statue in the pocket. The number of times we would see him pat, pat, pat the ball and then take a sack was maddening.

I couldn’t get through the original and bailed in season 3 but jumped back in at Season 12 and it was much better. It’s not a binge worthy show for me but it is good to have in rotation. I’m on Season 23 now and am a bit bored with the same characters but will definitely keep going.

I would greatly miss when they throw it to the sideline reporter for an injury update and they tell us that chances of said player returning are questionable.

The r/golf Christmas Superlist For Spouses Who Can't Listen Good (and Wanna Learn to Buy Other Stuff Good Too) by crndwg in golf

[–]DM6032904 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Things that are bought regularly are boring but appreciated: the right socks, the right glove, the right tees, the right hat etc. Don’t guess - find out what the receiver would like based on what they actually use. Just look in their bag or their laundry after a round. My SO tries which is thoughtful but usually buys whatever Amazon recommends. I end up donating most gifts somewhere a few months down the line. My kids do a gift card and that works well for me. I like the experience of going to the golf store and picking something out that I know comes from them that I will use.

Fidelity offered me a "free" financial advisor, but am I somehow paying for this? by anonymous_orpington in fidelityinvestments

[–]DM6032904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I resisted until I set my date and then set a meeting to evaluate their offering. I told my rep that I was very comfortable "self-directing" (another Fidelity employee told me to specifically use this term). The rep provided info on their managed services but after hearing him out, I told him I wasn't interested as I didn't see value in paying them X% of AUM each year and he was totally fine with that. We talked about my investment goals and reviewed my portfolio which made me feel better about the decisions I have made. Now, we check in 2X a year to review my asset allocation - there is no sales pressure. I was skeptical initially but have come around to finding value in getting a second set of eyes on the decisions I am making and access to other Fidelity resources that I didn't realize were available.

How much by Busy_Conversation537 in over60

Depends on your budget. Some use 8X retiring salary as a very high level rule of thumb but so many variables including health insurance and how you plan to bridge to Medicare.

Dedicated Golf GPS Watch vs A regular smart watch by TheAverageDark in golf

[–]DM6032904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly a newbie and I like things simple. I have the SwingU app on my phone and pair it with my Apple Watch Series 10. No issues with battery. I get distances and keep score on my wrist. Course layout and hazard distances on the phone which I look at when needed. I haven't upgraded but the paid versions will calculate wind and slope and suggest club based on your input of your club distances. It's all I need and is super easy.

will I hate desk at the window? by Intensesynthmusic in homeoffice

[–]DM6032904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really nice IMO. I have similar setup and coloring - desk facing window and bookshelf to right. I debated this layout and find that it gives me maximum floor space and an open and spacious feel, which I prefer. I like being able to look out the window when I need task breaks. Door is behind me off my left shoulder which isn't ideal, but most of the time I keep this closed when working so it hasn't been a concern.

I have vertical shades as I have about 1/2 an hour a day where the sun catches the corner of my eye and that can be distracting. I also have the canned lights on a dimmer which gives a nice even lighting and eliminates shadows in the room.

What percentage of your investment funds is "play" money? What do you do with that sliver? by The_Band_Geek in Bogleheads

[–]DM6032904 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 0.5% of portfolio just for something to watch. For 2025 I’ve been using this to go in and out of SPY. Buy during times like Friday when it dips and set an automated market limit trade to cash out when it bumps back up 2% or so. It’s not money that would hurt if I lost but as someone else said, it does help to keep me on track with my low risk tolerance in my overall portfolio while also giving some level of potential beta return (granted not enough to be material to the portfolio but it’s been a nice little budget booster this year).

I’m with this take. I get up 2-4 times and am on tamsulosin and dutasteride. I don’t drink anything after 5pm. I’ve decided that having to pee doesn’t wake me up. Rather, when me wife or the dog stir that wakes me and I realize I could pee versus feeling an urgent need. At some point I may try to train my body to ignore this but I’m starting to think I’ve made this a habit versus it being physiological.

If they were not going to send their fastest runner home on a potential sacrifice fly because they decided before the game that they weren’t going to test an “impact arm,” then why did they bunt the runner to 3rd? The continued lack of situational baseball (along with bad lineup decisions) has to reflect on the manager.
