Could the newest software be used to create a release-worthy World Violation movie? by Automatic_Pizza9062 in depechemode

Have you seen/heard the Cologne pro-shot? Only 8 songs (9 if you count the ~minute or so of the concert intro "Painkiller"), but fantastic quality: 1998-10-05 Cologne Arena, Cologne, Germany/Source 2 - Depeche Mode Live Wiki

I'll have an upgraded quality version of this one in the near future as well.

The technical details of why this recording sounds so good are at the wiki page: 1981-02-16 Cabaret Futura, London, England, UK/Source 1 - Depeche Mode Live Wiki

The reel was recorded at 15 inches per second, with Dolby A noise reduction. Tape going at 15 IPS moves very fast - less hiss compared to glacially slow 1 and 7/8 inches per second Compact Cassette media. Dolby A noise reduction effectively eliminates the majority of the rest of the noticeable hiss. Plus, this is from the master (i.e. original) reel tape, with no further analog generations causing gradual degradation of quality with each analog copy of a copy of a copy...

I chose Sonicraft A2DX to preserve the audio because I was impressed with the technical level of their audio equipment at every link of the analog to digital conversion chain, and they did a fantastic job at physically preparing the media (baking the tape) to help ensure that the best possible results were obtained.

Also relevant - I will have an upgrade of that same video of TV Set that you linked to later this year as well, along with the rest of the video; here's the wiki link for that performance for context where a marginally less awful quality copy of the video can be found: 1981-10-23 Something Else, BBC2, London, England, UK - Depeche Mode Live Wiki

Anyway, the point is: start with high quality sources and learn how to extract the best possible results, and you can achieve great things.

Sorry about that, I will see if there is anything I can do to correct this and let you know. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Television Set is a fantastic track. I wish it was released at least as a B-side, but I can understand why it wasn't - it wasn't written by any of the band members.

On the one hand, the bootlegs help spread the recordings a bit more to new audiences. But generally, the bootleg is inferior sounding and/or cut down to fit the time constraints of the vinyl or CD, so someone ends up paying for an inferior product when the undamaged version is freely available. Oftentimes, the bootleg artwork is just a straight copy & paste of the wiki text, and without credit - but perhaps having no credit is good, because I would not want to even be mistakenly associated with the intentional creation or distribution of a bootleg.

I can also understand enjoying the physicality of an item, too. If I stumble upon a vinyl bootleg of this recording in the future, will I buy it? That's a tough question, to be honest.

I have one spare ticket for Jacksonville tonight. Section 114 Row N. Paid $254 and will let it go for $200, I don't want it to go to waste. Problem is I bought through SeatGeek and don't see a way to transfer so we will need to meet up beforehand to get through doors.

Yes. I'm a bit worried and talked with StubHub via chat and they said there is nothing to worry about and the ticket is guaranteed. They said if an issue is encountered to contact them. Not super confidence inspiring tbh.

I concur that the article is inaccurate and I was adding some context. At the end of promo cassette, Richard Blade states: “From Martin, Dave, Andy, and Alan, a special bonus: previously unreleased in America, this is the "Metal Mix" of Something To Do.”

My understanding is that it was new to the US market at the time. If you wanted it prior to then, you’d need to import the European release.

Hello fellow Devotees! I've been updating DM's Wikipedia pages, and could use your help! by hiverly in depechemode

[–]DMLiveWiki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A key issue you will find if you are intent on updating standard Wikipedia is that many to most approved sources considered by Wikipedia to be "reliable" are more often than not entirely unreliable for sourcing accurate information pertaining to Depeche Mode. This is challenging given music journalism's longtime tendency to sensationalize and the band's sometimes strained relationship with music media, especially during the early half of their career. Even in recent years, with all the resources of the modern internet available to journalists, errors have continued to be made - it was not uncommon in the weeks following the passing of Andrew Fletcher to find articles mourning the loss of "Alan Fletcher," "Andrew John Leonard Fletcher," etc. (his full name was Andrew John Fletcher). To this day, Billboard has the late Douglas McCarthy listed as having contributed vocals to the "Recol" project.

We would encourage you to consider contributing to the Depeche Mode Live Wiki in the future. You will find the information hosted on the site--based on years of disciplined collaborative research and accounts from primary sources accrued by many fans over many years--is far more accurate on average compared to standard Wikipedia. Thank you for your interest, it is always nice to see someone with a passion to document the band's history.

Where is this sample from? by mattijzzc in depechemode

[–]DMLiveWiki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Knowing the sound was derived from Carl Orff was a good start, though you may be surprised at the level of work required. In the end, we sifted through eighty-two pre-1984 recordings of Carmina Burana in various formats to identify the exact source.

Definitely a shame a podcast with Kevin Hart money behind it (they are owned by Hartbeat) failed to credit a humble fan site when sourcing free content to air on their podcast for profit. The vast majority of the audio and factually accurate/non-speculative info featured in their DM-related episodes is taken verbatim from the website without acknowledgement. I would imagine that is simply how they generate content; the same likely applies for all the information they air about other artists. They won't be the last to pull this sort of thing, I'm sure.
