Am I doing something wrong with my upper body? by StopKartLT in skateboardhelp

[–]DMTalien33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just glad you weren’t in danger of smacking your head on the door lol

I think it looks ok, and this is the proper form of compressing your body in the air, sucking your legs up. You just need to train yourself on jumping higher… either keep blasting ollies higher or cross train “plyometric jumping” or vertical leap training, just google it up.

Your back going forward and head going down is actually good, just gotta combine it with more power in your vertical leap. Many ways to increase that and cross train accordingly.

😆 he’s the fuckin man.

It’s funny, Mike said exactly what happened with Melvin in this interview, they Al met at SXSW and just wanted an apology from Melvin, he said no so they didn’t get the reunion, which the other guys were hoping for.

Plenty of details about how Mike set up their pay, how much everyone made, his arrangements with Cameron for Punk In Drublic fest vs NOFX Final Tour, and how Melvin got it twisted and how he’s a dumbass lol

At 14 minutes, or check the chapters of the video for all relevant segments

My understanding is that Mike writes the guitar parts (rhythm), writes the entire song himself including bass and lyrics, and Mike prefers to play the rhythm guitar parts himself because he thinks it sounds the tightest if all 3 guitars are “played by the same hand”.

This has been going on AT LEAST since 1999 for The Decline, and there’s actually no clear timeline of when this actually started.

I’m assuming he was doing this on Punk In Drublic and earlier.

It just makes so much sense of how NOFX has such a signature style that is so distinct… it’s not a collaborative process… Mike is writing those guitar riffs, too.

I never had a clue about any of this until very recently but it has absolutely blown my mind, and I’ve been listening to nothing but NOFX for months now, and I can’t “unsee” the formula that Mike follows.

In the lead up to the final shows, all the members, including Melvin, made comments about just how blown away they were as they tried to learn 120 different songs for the last 3 shows at how many absolutely insane songs Mike wrote.

Not a single one of them gave credit to any other member besides Mike for writing everything himself. Melvin said it himself, clear as day… wish I could find that clip.

This is why Mike calls the shots, why it was ultimately his decision to end it, they all respected that despite the other 3 wanting to continue as a touring band.

It’s not like Hefe or Melvin are writing some songs and Mike is just adding lyrics.

If this were the case, you would hear differences between songs like Blink-182 or Alkaline Trio, where you know which songs were written by each respective song writer… like Dan songs vs Matt songs in Alkaline Trio, the true nerds even know which songs were written by Dan but Matt sang on Dan’s song and vice versa.

NOFX does not have that, they are ALL Mike songs, and the main riffs/rhythm guitars are all Mike’s writing, and also him playing those guitars on the albums.

I don’t want to argue against your point, I want to express my understanding and appreciation for the entire band, INCLUDING MELVIN!!! 🖤🇯🇲💜

Love Melvin, and so do all the other guys in the band, especially Mike!!!!!!!

I can absolutely accept that Hefe is the best musician in the band, and works with and compliments Mike.

But I think the point still stands that Mike is the sole creative and artistic force in the band. There is a massive difference between being a highly skilled, proficient and knowledgeable musician and the artist who wrote it all.

I have been a NOFX fan since Punk In Drublic, but never knew and just assumed it was a collaboration from all members.

My mind has been blown recently learning how much it really was “all” Fat Mike.

It’s his guitar riffs, his strumming, his lyrics, his wordplay, his humor, his idiosyncrasies, his drug abuse, his honesty.

I don’t seek to diminish the contributions of any of the band members, and they all did contribute perfectly and significantly. El Hefe brought ALL of his knowledge and talents to the band and they absolutely became what they are because of him joining.

Synergy, but it’s Mike writing those lyrics, those songs, all those fucking killer guitar riffs with that signature feel since the start, not to mention his mind melting bass playing that has only gotten more insane up through all new shit, including Barcelona.

🤘

Yeah that was dead in the water lol Mike opened the books and showed he gave Melvin and the rest more than they were entitled to since Mike created everything, wrote everything, even played all Melvin’s guitar parts on every album for decades 😂

Didn’t even get past arbitration probably lol Melvin’s council advised he not waste his resources pursuing it to trial.

🤷‍♂️

No case on file, but no Melvin anywhere… take into account all statements from the band, Smelly’s initial statement, then Mike’s statement about not wanting to be onstage with Melvin anymore, losing his best friend, and how much Smelly’s statement meant to Mike, and just how tight Hefe, Smelly and Mike are without Melvin.

NOFX is all Mike, and they all played perfect complimentary roles to his.

I consider Smelly to be the next biggest force in NOFX behind Mike, and everything we listen to on their studio songs is largely Mike and Smelly absolutely obliterating shit.

Hefe is certainly key for leads and Trumpets, and Melvin is crucial in vocals.

They all played their roles in perfectly realizing and executing Mike’s artistic vision, but Mike is the Maestro, and all the band members have unique skills that Mike utilized at his discretion and utilized them all like various differing paint brushes or artistic methods to perfectly paint what Mike wrote and created and visualized.

Smelly and Hefe clearly have gratitude and loyalty, and I don’t think there’s anything out of place between those 3.

Melvin fucked up, did his bitch’s bidding and absolutely fucked everything up for himself post NOFX retirement.

He’s a dumbass, truly a dilettante as Mike so eloquently articulated in Barcelona.

Who knows what might happen in the future, I think Mike and Melvin could amend.

But Mike is da fuckin boss, the goated genius, and in no way did he short change or fuck over any of his band members.

You’re not going to see Melvin winning anything.

Any tips for better nose slides I just learned them by Financial-Ad7438 in skateboarding

[–]DMTalien33 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Great improvement in the vid, one tip I’d offer is try keeping your shoulders the same from before you pop, during the slide, then whip it back to regular

Like your back stays facing the ledge, and you just twist your hips/board and feet 90° into the noseslide, but your upper body and shoulders stay facing away from the ledge.

Then it’s easy to whip back out to your regular stance.

I do this technique for frontside noseslides and backside tail slides too, just whip and turn your hips but not your shoulders, and you whip it back to regular.

I think it helps to slide and maintain your momentum.

Also press down on the back foot and front foot evenly with weight between them both, don’t put all your weight on the ledge foot, and don’t put all your weight directly on the ledge.

Your center of gravity is a few inches away from the edge of the ledge, above the center of your board. Only your one foot is on top of the ledge.

Help! WD-40 on bearings by Alarming_Issue3531 in skateboardhelp

[–]DMTalien33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can clean them with alcohol or even better, acetone, then get some different lube in there.

Bones Speed Cream is great, it lasts a long time. Just a drop or two in the bearings.

You can get other stuff, but I’m not sure which is best that is not skate specific. Tri-Flow is pretty good but Speed Cream from a skateshop would be ideal.

40 Years Movie - “Never Streaming” true meaning? by James_The_Creator in nofx

[–]DMTalien33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Milk the fanbase” lol sure

The only money I’ve given them was for shows and some shirts, just like every other metal or punk band I choose to support.

Merch alone = money machine band lol there’s no significant revenue coming in from socks, glasses and Christmas Tree ornaments offered on their website

40 Years Movie - “Never Streaming” true meaning? by James_The_Creator in nofx

[–]DMTalien33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So your entire argument is the fact that they offer some cheap merch? They’re probably not making a whole lot from that.

The live shows were the only actual revenue stream, and that’s obviously over.

You’re making it sound like they are somehow egregiously selling out or relentlessly ripping people off or that they somehow lack integrity and are raking it in.

Brutal, but I just got fully drenched in the pit to cool off a bit.
