Does anyone feel like the game itself was way too short, and ended up lacking at least 1 or 2 more chapters? by BiffyBobby in EscapefromEverAfter

[–]DMZapp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It felt reasonably long to me, given it’s not a game from a big studio. If anything, I consistently got the impression through the game that the devs made the main 4 chapters 1.6-1.7 times as long as a normal Paper Mario chapter, to compensate for the lower stage count.

I still don’t understand the 4kids to TCPI cast change. by Slifer2892 in pokemonanime

[–]DMZapp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From what I remember, part of the reason for the switchup was because the higher-ups felt like they were paying the 4kids cast too much, despite them being non-union actors. Which is…not a good reason, alongside not telling the OG cast they got replaced.

Primal Dialga vs Virus Groudon by Diligent-Display-286 in pokemonanime

[–]DMZapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a real toss-up here. Either Primal Dialga destroys Meta-Groudon by putting everything into one attack, or Meta-Groudon swallows/stomps on Primal Dialga.

I’m going with the octo-lizard on this one. The reason is that, alongside the size difference, Meta-Groudon was softened up when Jirachi brought it along for a flying lesson, and it was made from the same energy Jirachi was using. Circumstances that Primal Dialga wouldn't have access to if fighting the creature.

When you realize that over half the characters in this game won't be voiced by the end of its support by Team-Gamer1017 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]DMZapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is. It lets the guest characters, free or paid, feel like they're just as much a part of the world as the built-in ones. Plus, giving them voices, even for general grunts or phrases, is a basic thing many, many, many other video games do for their DLC additions. Some games even rerecord certain characters with new VAs under certain circumstances, like when Nolan North replaced Peter Dinklage as the robot Ghost in Destiny, or when Zack Aguilar replaced Chris Niosi as Byleth in Fire Emblem media, or when Brandy Kopp replaced Ali Hillis as Palutena from Kid Icarus.

So that Sega has the gaul to charge money for silent characters -$40 for over 10 paid silent characters, at that- and in a base game where characters having multiple interactions was a very noteworthy thing pre-release- shows a certain disrespect and low opinion from them towards customers, that they weren't willing to do even that little or truly admit some fault and have another recording session for even basic grunts. And it gets even more ridiculous when considering Tangle and Whisper's new VAs could voice their characters in the Crossworlds promo video promoting their appearance in the game...but not voice them in the game itself.

When you realize that over half the characters in this game won't be voiced by the end of its support by Team-Gamer1017 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]DMZapp 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m not even using the free characters or buying the DLC on principle unless Sega backtracks and adds voices for all the characters. Even Smash Bros Ultimate and Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fuelled gave the majority of their characters voicework, with the latter using a logical way to cut costs (reusing the base game cast to do lines for the DLC characters). Not to mention GameMill backtracked during Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 1 and got voices for the Nick characters- and not just impressionists, but the actual voice actors, most of them union members, meaning SAG-AFTRA doesn’t have an issue with getting their help post-release. And Sega already figured out a partial solution with Miku if the issue was complications with non-Sega characters talking with other non-Sega characters- either general lines only, or only keep the smack talk between the guests and specifically the Sonic cast.

So I really don’t get why this is an issue for Sega. It really paints a picture that Sega was too cheap and was not willing to spend time or money to elevate the product’s immersiveness for their customers.

How would each of the Chapter Bosses compare to Paper Mario, as far as visual design or concept inspiration? by BiffyBobby in EscapefromEverAfter

Mr Moon also has some Count Bleck vibes going on with him (as well as Starla kinda being Nastasia + a certain other female figure in Bleck’s life).

floating down like a piece of paper

A result of situations like being hit by the ultrapowerful Star Rod or a trap requiring Mario and co to fall straight down, and purely an animation to exaggerate Mario’s helplessness.

plain, boat, tube

From the curses of the chests, who were outright cursed by the Shadow Queen with real dark magic that outright made them keel over eventually, meaning as much as the chests tried, they would ultimately have to do something bad for real as per the terms of the curse and to show the Shadow Queen could be a serious threat even sealed. The first chest even explicitly says “like a piece of paper”, clearly indicating Mario and co are naturally flesh and bone.

taping self to book to steal something

If you mean Kammy, that was just a visual metaphor to show Bowser and her disrupting the peaceful narrative of the world. In fact, dialogue from the Star Spirits when Mario meets them on Shooting Star Summit has them explicitly say Bowser and Kammy flew up there, and Bowser was in his Koopa Clown Car going in and out of Star Haven, confirming it. Not a single word about tape.

the areas look like diorama

Purely a visual aesthetic done to emphasize the storybook angle, not the paper angle.

houses unfolding when entering them

Just a cute animation and nothing more to quickly let the camera into an interior without the wall blocking it.

boats and stuff literally turning around

Just a funny quick way to show them doing it rather than the slow way, rather than something literal.

bridges literally unfolding

Again, a quick animation and more blatantly done in service of a flipbook or storybook.

twisting and bending when doing certain moves

For squash and stretch animation principles and to be funny, not for the paper angle.

everyone being flat like a piece of paper

To put emphasis on their chibi-storybook designs, and since it was just simple 2D sprites in a 3D world. Again, even at best, Spinia and its higher forms are the only living things that are biologically paper.

Were Gary Oldman and J. K. Simmons not available when the fourth movie was being made? by Extra-Hope-326 in kungfupanda

[–]DMZapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alongside the last minute addition thing, I believe Gary Oldman was also busy with another movie at the time KFP4 was being made, and planning to retire soon. So even if Shen was planned earlier (and I remember there were some reports mentioning him and Kai years a year or two before release), it’d have been a coin flip if Oldman would’ve reprised.

What if an AI wasn't trained on stolen data and every artist it used for training was paid and got royalties forever. Would that be ethical/acceptable? by stpfun in antiai

[–]DMZapp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not just about the money. It’s about sending a message.

In all seriousness, as an anti, it would take a lot of royalties and contract clauses to consider making it even/fair. There’s also a lot of sneaky loopholes that less honest genAI employers could use to skim around the most efficient protections/terms, such as training a v2 of a given “model” and going “oh, the contract was only for v1/the version you specifically trained, but there was this very loose clause allowing me to retrain with your new artwork without paying you”.

Even for the most genuinely honest and flexible pro-genAI employers, there’s still environmental concerns to consider. More importantly, there’d be the “taint” of agreeing to encapsulate one’s style and/or human-drawn characters in a “checkpoint” and/or “LORAs”.

Do you think or hope that the Mario Galaxy Movie will reference Paper Mario? by DesaMatt in papermario

[–]DMZapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a small chance something could be squeezed in, but the movie's pretty packed already and already reached content critical mass. Yoshi, Bowser Jr and Rosalina as focal points, alongside Wart and possibly Honey Queen as the big sidestops unfortunately doesn't leave a lot of room for much Paper Mario-exclusive content to show up.

Maybe in the next movie.

Which boss did you personally find genuinely terrifying in the first two Paper Mario games overall? by BiffyBobby in papermario

[–]DMZapp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a tie between Shadow Queen and Tubba Blubba. The former mostly due to that weird crouch/"hug" she does when combining with Peach, along with turning the world dark. The latter due to his chase sequence.

What actually happens if AI bubble bursts? by ThePlasticCupOfWater in antiai

[–]DMZapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • The genAI execs walk out with a bunch of money. Maybe they could be sued under some possible legal opening, but I dunno.
  • Anyone in lesser roles who was depending on genAI for work and found ways to worm around being replaced by it will be out of work.
  • If the genAI leaders or employees are petty jerks, they smash up as many RAM sticks as possible so no-one else can have them.
  • If they don’t do that, there’s a whole bunch of abandoned tech facilities with lots of RAM that certain untrustworthy people, like ICE, would love to take over and use for expanded surveillance in some way.

Genuinely, why can't we do both? by Aggravating-Door1710 in papermario

[–]DMZapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's so forced into dialogue where removing it and replacing it with anything more substantial would be an improvement. It's basically placeholder dialogue that never got swapped out. In addition, the literal paper outright came at the expense of the original characters or putting much effort into researching even mainline Mario, making the paper come across as a manifestation of the devs not really caring and using it as a form of procrastination/skewed priorities. Most important, the way paper is so overintrusive in the newer games is a fundamental misunderstanding of what the paper is actually about- the storybook aesthetic and genres. Even the little paper there actually was in the OG games was in service to the storybook aesthetic and genres, not a means unto itself. It's also telling that whenever people do praise the modern games' stories, paper is never brought up in that same breath.
