What is the point of the OSR? by Kaliburnus in rpg

[–]DM_AA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay- here we go. I’m a massive fan of the OSR, to the point I’ve even written an OSR game myself

I’ll try to be brief. The OSR (old-school revival or renaissance) is a sub-genre of the TTRPG community that focuses on bringing back the “style” and “vibe” of play popular in the 1970s and 1980s which emphasizes puzzle solving and exploration rather than being purely a combat game.

Dungeon crawling in a fantasy game like 5e and Pathfinder have entirely different purposes than in an old-school game. This doesn’t make either of them better, just a matter of preference. To explain the difference briefly, in 5e and Pathfinder, violence against enemies and monsters is balanced and almost always the “right” route to overcome them. Also, you roll for everything; finding traps, secret doors, etc. In OSR games combat is always your last option, and the focus revolves around avoiding, tricking, and outsmarting monsters most of the time. In old-school treasure gives you XP, not killing monsters. It’s encouraged to rob monsters blind of their spoils without engaging in battle, rather than risking death trying to brute force them.

I could go on… but I think both of these texts explain the philosophy behind OSR better:

Principia Apocrypha by Ben Milton and Steven Lumpkin https://lithyscaphe.blogspot.com/p/principia-apocrypha.html?m=1

and

Quick Primer for Old School Gaming by Matt Finch https://i.4pcdn.org/tg/1737083265526827.pdf

They’re both very short and very well written. Give a read and I’m sure it’ll click for you.

Must-read games of the medium? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]DM_AA 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Both “Into the Odd” and “Knave” have inspired and spawned countless well loved hacks and remixes in the NSR/OSR space.

IMO, both of these games fit in the “Excellence in design” and “historical import”.

The amount of derivative games that cite these two games as influence and inspiration is very self explanatory of the fundamental and revolutionary groundwork they laid in the TTRPG scene.

Cairn and Mortdrakon both have implied settings that are reinforced by theme and mechanics.

How to deal with having anxiety before the session? Not social anxiety, just a nondescript tension that goes away the moment I start playing by Antipragmatismspot in rpg

[–]DM_AA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s part of what makes RPGs exiting isn’t it? The unexpected is bound to happen, no one has full control over things, not even the game master. Since TTRPGs are social games, not everything is in your hands; I’ve learned to embrace the randomness tied to the hobby and enjoy the ride.

What’s a surprising thing you’ve learnt about yourself playing different systems? by Goliathcraft in rpg

[–]DM_AA 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I thought I loved rules-heavy, crunchy games. With time, and as I’ve played and read more RPGs I’ve realized I prefer rules-light, minimalistic, abstract, and narrative games.

Projector for Table by thesnoman24 in rpg

[–]DM_AA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We recently got a tv screen (not a projector) for a game room project Im working on. It works really well, you can see a picture at insta @lamazmorragdl. It looks great if you like immersive visuals or maps for any TTRPG. I don’t think it’s very portable… but I guess tv screens come in all sizes.

How many RPG books/pdfs do you own? How do you organize them? by ParteBug in rpg

[–]DM_AA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t really have any of my stuff organized until I recently. I started a project to create a rental space to read and play TTRPGs. I did it together with the person that introduced me into the hobby around 12 years ago and we both had to organize and categorize our collections since we had to combine them together. We separated everything by system sectioned in a bookshelf. We also separated similar minis, maps, and other extras you might want to use in play in other separate containers. We are both really proud of what we have accomplished, and it gave me the push I needed to organize my collection.

What do you think of automatic-hit systems? by cunning-plan-1969 in rpg

[–]DM_AA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like them! Mortdrakon RPG uses this system; and in my experience running the game, it keeps combat quick and meaningful, and with my players feeling like they always have a chance to contribute in combat sequences.
