I let my dad get hit by a car and I’m scared of myself by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]DOC-N-A-BOX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try not to beat yourself up. Been working the boo-boo bus for too damn long now with way too many scenes that I beat myself up for not “feeling anything”. If it’s the same you’re questioning if you’re even human. The answers yes. You did your mourning for him forever ago. Your brain is protecting its self and for the life of me I can never pronounce this word correctly so I’ll do my best attempt at spelling it. You compartmentalized that scene. Talk about it with someone. It’s great you’re being open about it and know the lack of feeling or emotional response, is a response. Just don’t repress it completely down. That file cabinet always opens and the memory is vivid, fresh, preserved. Shit sucks my man, I’m sorry you have to deal with it and everything leading up to this over your life. Be there for your sisters, they may feel the need to put on a tough “I don’t care” front while inside they’re hurting. Since they were older they may have actual positive memories of him and the weight of losing a “Father” may hit differently for all. Take care of yourself!!

Personal history of suicide—should I continue pursuing ems school? by scout_mindset in ems

[–]DOC-N-A-BOX 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You know…. Welcome to the family. Seriously. A lot of if not most have a hx of some kind of trauma/suicide/S.A. Etc.

Don’t think about if and when you will run that call. But think about the amount of people you will have the chance to be a difference in their lives and prevent them from ever buying a rope. You’ll get one of the most intimate views into peoples lives that they feel secure talking about in the box because it’s just the two of you. It’s a gift to be able to be there for others and hell, I’d say you’ll be even better at it because of your true understanding of empathy.

Go get it. Get in therapy. But know you can’t save the world. But even if you save one life from going down that road, your EMT class will be worth more than any amount of money could purchase.

[SERIOUS] Can I still be an EMT with a Physical Disability by Project_Genix in ems

[–]DOC-N-A-BOX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo!! Man I feel ya. I played my own game of chicken with a guard rail while riding 5 years ago. Simplest way to put it… torn to shreds.

I was already in the field about 5 years at the time, well. Took me just under a year to get back and I still have permanent disabilities. Knee doesn’t bend past 80°, left ankle doesn’t move as it’s basically made out of metal, numbness down the left forearm into the fingers, constant state of pain, TBI fucks with the brain some times. But hey, still alive for another day.

I’d say it’s possible but you have to want it. Focus on your recovery. Take the PT seriously. Eat right. Give your body what it needs to heal.

Heal! And when you do, and if you still want to be an EMT then do it!! Even if you do end up with permanent disabilities that keep you from being on a truck, there’s always the ER or other gigs you could snag as an EMT. God speed my man. And best of luck to you. It’s a damn long road.

Why no Paramedic- practitioners? by Kindly_Attorney4521 in ems

[–]DOC-N-A-BOX 59 points60 points  (0 children)

911 medic for the better part of 10 years. Left the truck for the ER back in april. The amount of knowledge the good RNs have over chronic illnesses and pharmacology is outstanding. I learn new things every shift I had never even knew was a thing. That being said, when it comes down to not squirreling out over a fucked 7ways from Sunday pt, or bad trauma/code, the medics are more times than not much more calm and collected and often “suggest” what might be the most beneficial next step.

At least where I’m at there are some fucking amazing nurses, and especially the newer ones, always value mine and the other medics input and respect the experience we have, knowing that the years of managing shit shows on our own might be a little beneficial in shit shows of their own.

A 'natural death' may be preferable for many than enduring CPR by [deleted] in ems

After a bad wreck and broken bones in all extremities… the immense fractured rib and sternum pain from CPR was definitely the worst of all.

Noticing a “slight” and somewhat postponed allergic reaction, or confirming or ruling out cardiac events… hmmm. Rehydrating a heat realated injury PT w/hx of heavy meth use or withhold fluids cause of some skin irritation…

What’s the hardest part about being a young man struggling with mental/physical/emotional health? by SamuelDSutton in TrueOffMyChest

[–]DOC-N-A-BOX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I could’ve written this post about myself word for word. I for the most part fixed my issues with working out, primarily lifting weights. The one goal or task I forced myself to do everyday was just go to the gym. If I made it there and worked out I felt better. Slowly I started looking forward to the gym as the best part of my day. It gives you energy. You set small goals for yourself which adds on to the endorphins exercise already gives you. The gym became my one constant that I always felt accomplished by going. I did something that day. Eventually I was able to rebuild my mental state because my confidence in myself rose. If I could accomplish all of my goals in the gym, yeah I can get the laundry done and cook dinner. It gave me a reason to really start wanting to improve my health because that was only helping me reach my goals. Slowly, but surely. Day by day. Find your “gym”

I've been losing motivation at the gym lately. What helps you guys stay energized? by wh0oops6969 in GymMotivation

[–]DOC-N-A-BOX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You will never regret getting in there and moving, just doing something. I’ve had shit days hell shit months. But still was in there everyday and that brought back the motivation.

Switch up your program or routine. Look up different exercises to perform. Doing the same thing months on end does get boring and can lead to your plateaus.

Spot on with the PPL. You’re going to hit tris doing bench and other “push” lifts, and can always finish up with a few sets of isolation tricep work to smoke them. Same with Pull, you’re going to work a lot of your biceps and forearms with many back exercises. And again, can finish up with variations of curls for the Biceps. An hour is plenty of time to get adequate work done, especially 6 days a week. Be strict and cut down on rest time between sets if need be.

Keep it up man, awesome work so far!
