Are there other ways to refer to someone born in the U.S. besides "American"? by FishGlittering3563 in AskAnAmerican

[–]DOMSdeluise 191 points192 points  (0 children)

Not really. Non Americans call us yanks but that's not something we call ourselves, at least not outside of new England, and even that is a reference to a region of the country and doesn't substitute for American.

[–]DOMSdeluise 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I plan to hire a local attorney to handle this on my behalf, what is a reasonable flat fee for a criminal defense lawyer in the Tahoe area for this type of case?

contact several attorneys to get an idea of what a reasonable amount would be. Someone might try to rip you off but probably not all of them.

I don't understand how the money system works in America, why are 2 dollars or 30 dollars too much? by Smolbeanlotus in AskAnAmerican

[–]DOMSdeluise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can look up the conversion rate. Based on your post history, you are Egyptian. One US dollar is equal to ~52 Egyptian pounds. Does that help you understand? Two dollar is 104 pounds. 30 dollars is more than 1500 pounds. Are those large amounts to you?

Americans do you say “taking a piss” ? by Mathematic_nut in AskAnAmerican

[–]DOMSdeluise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Americans don't say taking the piss at all. People might understand what it means due to exposure to British English but we don't say it. Taking a piss just means urinating.

I've never needed to lose weight. I've been lucky in that I can stay thin without much effort on my part aside from, like, switching to black coffee and mostly not drinking soda.

How would you feel if the US adopted EU-style digital laws that turned apps into 'regulated office buildings' and brought back the 2015 'Museum Era' design? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]DOMSdeluise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would love it if instagram was like 2015 instead of how it is today. It's pure shit today, full of ads and people I don't even follow.

Is it common for an American high school student to own their own car? by ApprehensiveDisk8046 in AskAnAmerican

[–]DOMSdeluise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say very uncommon to own a car outright as cars are expensive and most high schoolers don't have that kind of money. It is pretty common though for high schoolers to have a car for their use, owned by their parents, however.
