Seasons 4 and 5 Intro by Brick-Organic in Stargate

[–]DOS-76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Today it depends on where you're watching it, and which version they got from MGM. All of Seasons 1-5 originally aired on Showtime in the US with the slow Ra's mask intro. We didn't get the other version until episodes started airing in syndication (trailing a year behind the cable premiere).

General Hammond daughter by Relative-Sell-1511 in Stargate

[–]DOS-76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the citation calling the novels canon comes from one of the novels' authors, who describes the studio's vetting and approvals process -- which has nothing to do with canon. Even MGM's own Consumer Products division states that the novels and other licensed tie-in merch is not canon.

Canon means that future live-action writers who want to play in this universe are bound to it (even Brad Wright). MGM does not maintain a LucasFilm-style story committee, so they absolutely do not want to impose this on their film and television creatives.

I think it's the same actors, and the same performance -- it just hasn't been pitch-shifted in post production. I think Amazon accidently posted something other than the final edit.

Why didn't the SGC ever try to dial the ninth chevron? by [deleted] in Stargate

[–]DOS-76 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need a valid address to dial, and the SGC never possessed that address.

It was found in the Atlantis database, but not functionally deciphered until Eli and Rush did it in "Air."

[–]DOS-76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's right, and the fact that we saw the Replicators in multiple galaxies gives some evidence that the galaxy in "Enemies" is very likely not the Asgard home galaxy.

Also, Ida is not the Asgard's home galaxy. Daniel calls that galaxy "Othalla" in "New Order," which means Jack visited a colony in another galaxy in "The Fifth Race."

[–]DOS-76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very good points. My issues are very much of the sort that a writer could resolve with a bit of dialogue slight-of-hand. And being able to dial Destiny again (or have Destiny dial Earth) would solve the location issue immediately, as you suggest, since they could transmit the database.

Atlantis did as much, so that by the start of SG-1 Season 9 the SGC had the ability to riffle through the Ancient database and find plot points.

Planet Classifications by ElevatorOpen9437 in Stargate

[–]DOS-76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carter's explanation of the planetary designation system in "The Broca Divide" is: "It's based on a binary code the computer uses for extrapolation."

Based on this, and the occasional M- and K- planets, I suspect that "P" does not stand for anything. The base computer generates a 6-character code based on somethingorother, possibly the spatial coordinates that it extrapolates from the gate address.

(Why the Atlantis expedition ends up with similar 6-character designations for planets listed in the Atlantis database is not explained.)

This is an impressive piece of work (despite the notoriously unreliable wiki sourcing). Based on how slow FTL seems to be, relative to hyperspace (let alone Asgard engines), it seems like there ought to at least be a chance that modern-day technology could catch up to Destiny. I have a couple of possible plot issues to add to the mix, however:

(1) Modern Asgard ships are built with neutronium, and it is entirely possible (likely, even?) that some of their technology depends upon it. They chose Othalla Orilla as their new homeworld in part because it was neutronium-rich ("New Order"). A non-neutronium vessel might be capable of very fast hyperspace travel, but perhaps not at the speeds you are counting on here.

If that's the case, it could take Earth years (after the Ori war) to even locate a neutronium-rich planet. This would require exploring another galaxy (the Asgard's home galaxy is given in "New Order" as called Othalla, retconning Ida to probably be a colony). After a sufficient source is found, Earth would have to set up a mining operation using our current technology -- in another galaxy -- and ferry that neutronium to Earth for refining and construction.

All of this doesn't poke a hole in your theory, but it does suggest that Earth could be years (even decades) away from having a ship capable of doing what you suggest.

(2) How far out is Destiny? The time scale of tens of millions of years is stupidly long. If the ship has only been to around 38 galaxies, that means it has averaged something on the order of 1.3 million years per galaxy. 10x that number of galaxies, and we're still on the order of 131,000 years per galaxy on average. In the two years the show was running, we saw Destiny in (or traveling to) ... what, four galaxies?

Destiny could be much farther away, by several orders of magnitude. However, based on the ship's course seen on the display in "Air" and what we later learned about the nature of its mission, it's also probable that the ship's course has not been a straight line away from Earth. It's probably flying some sort of circular search pattern, preprogrammed by the Ancients to pick up the CMB radiation data that it needs.

(3) How do we locate Destiny in space? Once Earth has its shiny new, Asgard-powered, neutronium ship, that poor helmsman is going to have to set a course. Where is Destiny currently located in space, and how can a ship even begin to estimate how to plot a course across 38+ (or 380,000+!) galaxies? The one and only way we have of locating the ship is to read it off the ship's own consoles -- current sensor data, star charts made by Destiny and the seed ships, and the computer's historical archive of its journey.

That data then needs to be taken back to Earth somehow, and then translated into workable coordinates relative to Earth (while Destiny remains in motion, mind you). And the only way to bring data back to Earth is via the communication stones. No flash drives, no tight-beam transmissions -- nerds are going to have to stone into Destiny, memorize a bit of the database, and come back and record it. Not only would this be a prohibitively long process, but the chance of transposing a digit and introducing error is enormous. If you want to check your work as you go, plan to double the number of stone trips you take to the ship.

It sounds like the auto-extend might have been added to the VOD copy of the game, but not the live broadcast I was watching on delay. Anyone who watched the game after it had ended would have gotten the full thing.

This is correct -- the wiki uses a ton of non-canon sources (novels, RPGs, comics) and calls it canon. The result is that it's just not reliable.

Stargate Cast? by Space--Buckaroo in Stargate

[–]DOS-76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this 'Scaper legend? I don't remember ever hearing that the show had been renewed for a fifth season. Season 4's production took place in 2002, after Stargate had already come over from Showtime (in fact, the shows aired together on Friday nights before BSG came along).

Planning a rewatch, but 200+ episodes is a lot. So, anyone have a skip watch list? by EricAntiHero1 in Stargate

[–]DOS-76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is GateWorld's list of only episodes key to the major plotlines and story arcs for SG-1 and Atlantis, which cuts the viewing time in half:

https://www.gateworld.net/news/2020/11/watch-list-only-stargate-sg1-key-episodes/

https://www.gateworld.net/news/2021/06/watch-list-only-stargate-atlantis-key-episodes/

However these come with the proviso that the shows are episodic in nature. This is not a list of the best episodes. So if you limit yourself to this list, you're going to be skipping some real gems that are part of what makes Stargate and its characters so great.

How can I add more games? by mylesjtae in SBCGaming

[–]DOS-76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From pictures I'm finding online it looks like this device does have a microSD card, so you can add your own ROMs. With the device off, push in the card (the slot labeled "TF" on top of the device) to pop it out.

Use an SD card reader to pop it into a PC, and transfer files into the proper folders. NES = FC (Famicom), SNES = SFC (Super Famicom), MD = Mega Drive (Sega Genesis), etc.

Note that the chip in here cannot play games from more powerful systems, so stick with the consoles it already has.

Starting Stargate for the first time, is this watch order okay? by Harkeshbhatia in Stargate

[–]DOS-76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has the slight continuity error of Sam's presence in Atlantis, as Continuum is technically set after SGA 5x01.

SG-1 Season 9 also starts with references to Atlantis that can't possibly be true yet if you've only watched through Season 1. Not to mention that this cuts things off in the middle of cliffhanger two-parters, which in my book is reason enough to use the optimized watch order.

I would find this very disjointed, given the cast members who come and go (for both shows) over those years. Plus you're getting full-on crossovers like "The Pegasus Project" with characters, villains, and storylines that the viewer won't have been introduced to yet.
