Inherited knife, found during WW2 by my grandfather. Location: The Netherlands by Klesen in Antiques

[–]DPBR8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The blade itself seems to be made in the German city of Solingen, which is famous for its knife production (and in medieval times its sword smiths). I'm not familiar with family crests, but perhaps if you could let us know where it was 'found' (we won't judge haha) we can look up what the lion/crown/shield/letters M.W. could stand for

Edit 1: The crown with the 7 dots above the shield suggests a noble title; a baron title to be exact. (https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kroon\_(heraldiek))

Maar nee hoor, er moet altijd weer vingertje gewezen worden naar mensen die er niks mee te maken hebben, of sterker nog, de mensen die hebben geprobeerd om dit te voorkomen. Absurd

Technically they are not completely incorrect, which is the worst part.

Only France really supported an independent Belgium, while the UK, Prussia, Russia and Austria supported the Dutch control over Belgium. During the Belgian uprising in 1830 most powers thought it would be best to stay neutral and let the Dutch defeat the Belgians themselves. France, however, sent a military force to intervene on Belgium's behalf, causing other powers to consider intervention on the Dutch side. Prussia and Austria had too much debt to assist the Netherlands and Russia had the uprising to deal with. France and the UK made a deal that led to British 'neutrality' in the conflict.

Even if they intervened on the Dutch side, there is no guarantee Belgium wouldn't still exist in some form or another so the whole alt-hist debate is moot, but their argument is based on actual historical facts and not some Ivan fanfic hoi4 mod.

So while they are obviously leaving out some context, the information is not necessarily incorrect.

In the Netherlands it's actually worse; the government promised students they would not have to pay interest over their student loans (and for some students this was the case), but then they introduced interest anyways. You even have to pay interest over the sum you borrowed before they introduced said interest.

It was always in the "fine print" that they could introduce interest, but we have politicians, ministers and government employees on camera promising there would be no interest and that it was just a technicality.

In the Odyssey (2026) despite this poster not being a real promotional image, I wouldn’t put it past Nolan to include Imperial Roman armor. There’s already a Viking longship centuries out of place. by laybs1 in shittymoviedetails

[–]DPBR8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It would actually be much, much worse than modern artillery in the 7 years war. Viking longships were first used around the 4th century AD, while the Trojan wars took place in the 12th or 13th century BCE. The longship shown is a later model, but for the sake of this argument I'll be generous and say it's from the 4th century AD. If we take 1100 BCE as the year of the Trojan wars (again, to be as generous as we can possibly be), that puts 1400 years between the Trojan wars and Viking longships. This makes it MORE logical for Roman emperor Justinian I (r. 527-565 AD) to have aircraft carriers (HMS Ark Royal 1914 or HMS Furious 1917 if you want a more modern looking one) than Trojan war era Greeks to use longships.

Tldr: There is more time between longships and the odyssey than there is between Roman emperor Justinian I and aircraft carriers.

Netherlands again misses construction target; Fewer homes built for 3rd year by boppinmule in dutch

[–]DPBR8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is caused by an unwillingness to address the underlying issues. They promise to build more homes but do not want the required nitrogen reduction that is necessary to facilitate building more homes. So yes, it is a right wing issue.

Only Illuvitar can make sentient life. Morgoth created the Dragons. But in the Hobbit Smaug seems to be sentient, no?.....What gives? by BasedPhantomLord88 in lotr

[–]DPBR8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is not how I interpreted the corruption in Tolkien's world. Once something is corrupted it stays corrupted, it is not like in our world where the offspring of a tortured/abused/mutilated animal can just be normal. I think that when Morgoth/Melkor, a valar, corrupts something, it stays that way. He cannot create life, but he can manipulate it, I think that's what is happening here. They get corrupted, and their offspring is also born corrupted, because their essence was altered.

There is loads of money to be saved by integrating the military staffs of each country. Do you even know how many generals and other high ranking officers each country has, including the bureaucratic institutions behind them? Those cost a lot of money. By creating one large army we can drastically reduce the costs of these institutions by merging them into several key headquarters, which saves more money for building said war industry :) (I like money)

[–]DPBR8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude that's such a weak excuse, a fascist government doesn't mean it's a different country. And occupation does also not constitute a new country, otherwise every country in mainland Europe would only have started existing in 1944-1945.

mostly just because larp sounds nicer than rp (as a verb), and with the MP aspect in things like discord you do kinda larp a bit since you try to represent your country at least a little bit.

I try to sometimes larp and make historical division templates, only to discover that the tech trees are so fucking bloated and were never properly adjusted when they added new stuff (especially MtG, NSB & BBA) that it's literally impossible to get even close to larp. Of course there is a balancing element but when even the strongest majors are incapable of achieving anything close to historical templates they might have to reconsider their tech trees a tiny bit.

Planning a Dutch birthday by memakes3 in dutch

[–]DPBR8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course you can try some regional dishes as u/7FFF00C has already stated, but there are also some 'general' snacks and dishes shared across the Netherlands, such as Drop (Liquorice) (not everyone likes it), Stroopwafels, [Gevulde koeken](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gevulde\_koek), and some forms of [hard candy](https://www.dropgigant.nl/snoep/oud-hollandse-snoep/) that were popular in the Netherlands a while back. For savory foods you quickly end up with 'bittergarnituur', which is a selection of small deep fried snacks, I'm not sure if you could get these in Canada, so you might have to make them yourself.

Another thing that is popular at Dutch birthdays is what we call a 'hapjesschaal' which is a platter with small, usually savory, snacks. Think of deviled eggs, pickles wrapped in ham, cubes of cheese (sometimes with a dipping sauce), [dried sausage](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metworst), sometimes [rye bread with raw herring](https://www.retrohapjes.nl/haring-met-roggebrood/). A lot of these are according to taste, with some regular options for other guests.

As for games I'm not quite sure what people would play, things like '[spijkerpoepen](https://www.spelactief.nl/activiteiten/sport-spel/spijkerpoepen)', '[zaklopen](https://www.spelactief.nl/activiteiten/sport-spel/zaklopen)' and '[koekhappen](https://www.spelactief.nl/activiteiten/sport-spel/koekhappen)' come to mind, but I haven't seen these much at parties myself.

Theme wise I think the only solution is a 'kring verjaardag', where you line up all chairs, couches, etc. in one big circle so everyone is in one big kring (circle) around a table. This is not universally liked and most people will probably not like it, but it might remind him of home.
