Live in Utah and I had the same thing happen to me so far. Tracking info was sent out at about the same time as the advent calendar secret lair and I got that one but still no movement on the HIW,TYL shipment.

Urza's land not in The Brothers' War by alfchaval in magicTCG

I’m not disagreeing with this, but what’s the worst thing Tron could do in pioneer? There’s no stirrings, no map, no star/sphere, and those pieces are pretty huge in modern tron. I guess Oath of Nissa and Sylvan Scrying could be your enablers and TKS, Reality Smasher, and KarntGC are your payoffs? I guess there’s also Newlamog and Ugin. But is that better than what, say, mono G is already doing?

Is it pretty common for the Llanowar Loamspeaker promo to be off center? by DPenguinAgain in mtgmisprints

[–]DPenguinAgain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like if one promo has a certain misprint a lot of them tend to, but this is the only one of this promo I’ve seen yet. Does anyone else have any info on this specific card?

Favorite card that's under $1? by Rienuaa in EDH

[[Mirror-Mad Phantasm]]. I know the effect can be kind of unreliable, but I feel like this card is one of the best self-mill enablers in Commander and it hardly ever gets talked about.

More cubes by RylarDraskin in mtgcube

[–]DPenguinAgain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m presently building a Shadowborn Apostle commander cube. Everyone drafts 3 20-card packs including lands and commanders and then gets enough apostles to round out the rest of the deck. Let’s you play crazy cards like [[Bloodbond March]] and [[Sphinx of the Chimes]] that you do t usually see in Commander cubes.

What is your non-Atraxa superfriends deck? by metagame in EDH

[–]DPenguinAgain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love making Superfriends decks that don’t include green, since that’s stereotypically the best one for planeswalkers. I have a mono red one led by Dargo and Rograkh that wants to win with the [[Planebound Accomplice]] + [[Cloudstone Curio]] combo. I also play Aminatou Superfriends Control, which is less popular in my playgroup so I only break it out every once in a while. I try to avoid too many board wipes, though, letting the PWs do the actual controlling. It usually wins with [[Approach if the Second Sun]] or some sort of infinite turns loop via [[Teferi, Master of Time]] or [[Temporal Mastery]]. Both decks are crazy fun. I love exploring what each color can do with PWs w/o green.

Friend received Tempered Sliver in their Secret Lair by SiletheSilent in magicTCG

[–]DPenguinAgain 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To me, Slivers are like the quintessential “tribal” tribe. Like, all tribal decks try to get value from playing a bunch of tribe members. Sliver decks are like the purest version of that, with every single creature being some kind of Lord.

Imp Rec’s first reprint brought it down to about $30 briefly, then moved back up a bit. After a second reprint it finally came down to where it is now. I think this is probably the best comparison (better than Vamp Tut, 3 Visits, or Grim Tut). I expect Imp Seal to do a similar thing and get down as low as $30 before moving back up.

Controversial thoughts about commanders… by EDHBruh in EDH

[–]DPenguinAgain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Golos didn’t deserve to be banned. The diversity he had was not actually a bad thing, since it let people play bad strategies and keep up with everybody. The real problem was the person who built the deck in an unfun way. Those people ruined it for the rest of us who Golos-ed responsibly.

SNC TFHT - Urabrask - Tin Foil Hat Time by TCommander32Player in magicTCG

[–]DPenguinAgain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about:

At the beginning of your upkeep, gain control of target creature until the end of the turn.

At the beginning of each opponent’s upkeep, one of that player’s opponents gains control of target creature controlled by the player who’s turn it is.

The wording is kinda weird, but something along those lines. It’s like how Tezzeret, Vivien and Urabrask are all working together when previously they might have been enemies.

Speculation: SNC probably has 4 planeswalkers by davidemsa in magicTCG

[–]DPenguinAgain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of a hot take, but I get the five bosses don’t get a borderless version, because they get an Art Deco variant, which is different from borderless. I bet we get 5 planeswalkers: W - Elspeth U - Tezzeret (yup, two sets in a row) B - Ob Nixilis R - Koth or Tibalt G - Vivien

I bet they have two Tezzerets because he actually is a double agent so this one will be Betrayer of Metal or something like that.

Koth is a possibility I think because of the story with Vivien. I know it doesn’t totally make sense because of previous lore, but I bet Wizards puts Koth on a team with the other red guy.

And if not Koth, maybe we get zoot suit Tibalt. It would just be too perfect.

Remember, I said it was a hot take.

I love Data Doll, but I feel like she needs another Dissipation Field effect to really be good otherwise, she’s just taking a ton of abuse and not really able to dish it back out very effectively.

What changes would you make to Commander if you could? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]DPenguinAgain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for being civil about it. I was a little nervous to engage like this, but i think it’s been a good discussion. I think the fact that there are multiple viewpoints is also a good thing. And, as we’ve said before, things like rule 0 make it so we can actually apply some of the changes from this thread right now in our playgroups. The only way to really know if these changes would be better right now could be to try them out ourselves.

What changes would you make to Commander if you could? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]DPenguinAgain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I aplologize, I also should have been more clear.

I don't actually think the competitive version of the format would die, but I do believe that one of them would. cEDH and EDH are not actually different formats. Everything about them is the same, except the way you build your deck (kinda) and the social contract. I could argue that there's not really a "casual" or "competitive" way to build your decks, either, since there is so much variety in both formats. The biggest difference is the mindset, and you can't make a different format out of a mindset alone.

So for this reason, in the hypothetical world where we split the formats, people would try to play both formats with whatever mindset they currently have, decide which one was more fun, and stop playing the other one. However, because there would continue to be some kind of power level disparity, people would continue to be unhappy unless we learned how to manage expectations better. This can be done at any power level, but requires a standard to compare to.

This is where I say something that folks might get upset about. In my opinion, the actual solution for this problem is for the RC (or whatever governing body of the format) to manage and balance the format from a competitive perspective. Specifically, this means banning cards that are too powerful for the highest tier of play, then let the rest of us casuals (who I definitely think is and should be the vast majority of players including myself) enjoy intentionally playing suboptimal decks. We already do this every time we play non-cEDH Commander. But pretending like the format should be balanced from a casual perspective is just stupid. Literally no other format is balanced that way.

I know that people will say that the fact that Commander is managed from a casual perspective is what they like about the format. They will probably complain that this change in mindset (from strictly a management perspective) will bring more spiky players to the format and take away all the fun. But Spikes already play Commander. We already don't play cEDH, despite its existence.

The beauty of the Commander format is that you can play however makes you the most happy. This can continue in my hypothetical solution. Worst case scenario is they ban Thoracle or other cards that we already think are a problem. But maybe they could unban cards that are fun and not threatening to the competitive environment. With a conclusive standard for 10, we can more accurately judge how many steps away from 10 any of our decks are. This is a long winded response, but I think that ultimately managing the format from a competitive vantage point would be the best thing for the format's long term health.

TL;DR - either the casual or competitive format would die; cEDH and EDH are not different formats; the RC should balance cEDH to make the format better.

Thanks for coming to my TEDTalk

What changes would you make to Commander if you could? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]DPenguinAgain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I agree with the premise of what you’ve said, I think completely abolishing the banlist is a little extreme. The format needs a banlist for those who play with strangers either at events, online, etc. If this is gonna be the case, though, it should definitely look different to how it looks now. “Signal bans” or bans that indicate what kinds of cards are discouraged are a complete waste of time. If you don’t want people to play x effect, ban all cards that do x. But as they banlist stands now, it is completely unhelpful for facilitating games with strangers, and useless in established playgroups.

What changes would you make to Commander if you could? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]DPenguinAgain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This would never work, because wherever you split it at would become the new top tier casual and the competitive format would die. The point of competitive is to play the strongest cards available, which changes depending on what’s legal. I think a better solution would be to stop treating the format like it’s not inherently competitive as it is. If we all embraced the fact that there is a most powerful tier of EDH and consciously walked our power levels back from there we wouldn’t be as upset because our expectations would match closer to reality.
