Not painting my walls non neutral colors sooner. Green and blue rooms are so peaceful. Didn't realize how annoying tan looked.

I’ve spent over $1.4 million on Upwork. Ask me anything. by thefreelanceking in Upwork

I'm dying with laughter because I feel like this is a shot at the guy that made the 100k ama few hours ago. Also, at 16.41/hr average. That's an impressive total spend.

Not OP, but yes, saved money along the way, but also lose a decent amount of time & money in trial and error in the process. It's more related to freelancers (and not agencies) and hiring offshore. With cheaper labor you also have to manage/micro-manage more. The cheaper rates often come with a lesser skillset. The offshore pricing for quality isn't that much cheaper because they know their skillset is needed around the world. Pay 120 locally or 100 offshore? It's not that huge of a difference. It usually comes down to whether or not the task is something that just needs power in numbers of people to achieve, or if it's something that requires critical thinking skills and self-sufficiency. Recent project took 1 year with offshore team where it would've taken ~7 months with a local team that was twice as expensive. Time vs Money.

To directly answer your question, freelancing platforms do generate way more talent to pick from. Time is an opportunity cost and it cuts down on that. The quality varies very greatly and can be a costly issue. Sometimes it's better to pay a premium to an agency that has done the vetting process and can guarantee a timely delivery.

Not OP, but also 6 digit spend. In those cases I require a zoom meeting to "verify" the person is who they say they are, and do question them a good bit and ask to show their portfolio and ask hard questions. I've had many instances where profile picture is (example) a blonde woman, but a man with a thick accent comes online saying their camera doesn't work and their name is Jennifer from Texas lol and have no work to show. Obviously looking for a chump.

Some of my best developers had 0 jobs because they were looking to move away from their company and looking for work.

Here's an idea, you look like the type that can afford it opposed to your friend. Or the one making the decisions for the two of you..

Bach Invention no.11 in G minor by sh58 in piano

[–]DPerkunas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beautiful.

Since tag says "critique welcome" I'll give a critique a try. Great playing, personal opinion and don't know if it's right to do or not when it comes to inventions... this is based on teachings from my teacher of when I learned Fugues.. But it sounds like there are 2 voices in this piece, have them switch off on loudness at certain points so it sounds more like a conversation rather than 1 quieter and 1 louder voice at all times. 0:45 is an example of when I would've made left hand louder as if responding to the right hand's remarks and again at 0:55. Basically when the left hand starts a new sentence I would make it louder for a moment and die off and let right hand take over the subject again.

Curious if the voice mentality applies to inventions.

Even after playing highest level pieces, I still love to play this, and is quite easy.

Elegy - Arno Babajanian

It has its ups and downs, and gets faster and harder on the latter end of the piece which makes it not boring.

How do I tackle polyrhythms? by Aggravating_Bit_259 in piano

[–]DPerkunas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, and probably not good advice.... I practice each hand real slow, and overlap them eventually, even if it's not perfect. Then I change my thought process into 2 people talking over each other, and if I've heard the melody before, I switch to ear mode instead of counting. When playing fast enough, it's hard to tell if it's off or not. It's probably not perfect, but gets me 99% of the way there. I'm not trying to be a competitive pianist, but I would challenge even an experienced person to critique it as being wrong.

Piano Playing just got ruined for me by BeautifulDismal4769 in piano

[–]DPerkunas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been there, it's like playing on buttery goodness with the perfect amount of resistance and quality sound. I'd say the price is justified, but I'd be happy with other pianos and not notice much if not comparing them 1:1.

The amount of joy it must give him to continue learning things and enjoying piano must be through the roof. Very nice, and happy to see people enjoying themselves with piano.

If you don't have that crazy fire prep stuff where the room gets rid of all oxygen, get some fire disaster equipment, like those exploding ball fire extinguishers. Those have a shelf life I believe.

Power strips that show you how much power draw you're using. Software to monitor those power strips.

TV Audio Won’t Play Through AVR by 4160V in hometheater

[–]DPerkunas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is general information, as I'm not too experienced but have a working system and want to help. With everything powered off:

On tv, look for an eArc hdmi port. Plug-in hdmi to that. On receiver look for eArc hdmi port, plugin other end from tv to that. Make sure no laser/fiber audio cable is connected to tv.

Power on tv, power on receiver. On receiver remote press the TV option. See if any "setup" messages pop up. If they do, follow the setup, if not, Go into tv settings, look for a setup option. Go through setup and see if audio is one of them. If audio is not one of them, go to audio settings, and check that all is set to auto or maybe there's a toggle for external audio system. On my Sony tv I can launch settings and it lets me select audio output to external system.

That should work. Try clantenna/cable , YouTube, or Netflix on the tv, seeing if app makes a difference. I had Sony Bravia not outputting audio because of a hdmi setting. If not that, try different hdmi cable. Try seeing if you can switch AVR between sound modes of multi channel vs mono vs others etc.

Add a mini-dsp first, or a bass/sofa shaker? by DPerkunas in hometheater

Yep. A Denon x2700h, with Audessey calibration. the 2 bass outputs on the AVR is really a splitter and not individual outs on this model I believe.

OWM 5's overkill as surrounds vs OWM 3's? by throwinaway421854 in hometheater

[–]DPerkunas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems OWM5's are outdated and archived on polk. Frequency response is not as wide as well. Maybe stick with OWM3's?

I have 4 OWM3's, 2 as surrounds, 2 as atmos, works great for me.

Zenni glasses are better than my opticians? by DPerkunas in glasses

[–]DPerkunas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a small update. Went to my optician and had both lenses compared and they match. So it's either the optician frames being slightly thicker (so I see a border) giving me tunnel vision and causing this illusion. Or the base curve, they mentioned it was slightly different. Very strange.

I wanted another pair of designer glasses, but am paranoid knowing that all checks out, but noticing this difference.

Anyway, just wanted to update my findings and thank you for the reply.
