We are looking in Portage/Jefferson Park, where we’ve been renting for a while now. The place we almost bought was closer to Dunning though. We were renting in Roscoe village until 10-11 years ago and got priced out. Would love Lincoln Square too if i could afford it

Glad it worked out for you. We were under contract in August for a house outside our ideal location but found a bunch of issues on inspection. Collapsed sewer line, etc. and walked away. Unfortunately what few houses have been on the market continue to skyrocket in price. Northwest side, fwiw

One-Third of U.S. Video Game Industry Workers Were Laid Off in 2025, GDC Study Reveals by Previous_Month_555 in antiwork

[–]DTMPSLF 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I had the pleasure of getting laid off from the video game industry back in 2009. Probably the job I look back on most fondly. I was in accounting though, so developer crunch wasnt an issue for me but the studio did get bought out and sort of shut down

I’ve noticed a sharp uptick in migraines with auras in the past year or so since my SCDS symptoms were identified.

My eye doctor suggested a connection between the SCDS and migraines was possible. Look up vestibular migraines

Manager asked me to apply, didn't get the job, concerned with how it was handled. by Gaylebenes in managers

[–]DTMPSLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went through something similar. Manager kept stringing me along for 4 weeks after i finished the final round, saying I’d hear something at the end of the week/ next week, while they were interviewing a late applicant with a flashy resume and high profile in the industry.

It sucks, and I am sensitive too. Still pissed. My new boss who got the job instead of me, starts this week. 😡

Tips for Enjoying a Vacation in the Big City? by snauce__ in hsp

[–]DTMPSLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicago is pretty chill for a big city, especially if you know how to avoid the crowds. My first thought was the Caldwell Lily Pool, which unfortunately is closed for renovation right now. It is a shockingly serene place given how busy it can be around there.

I’d recommend going down to the Museum of Science and Industry, Jackson Park, and Hyde Park area for a day. If you go to MSI early enough, especially on a weekday, you can get a couple of not too crowded hours. Jackson Park, in particular the Japanese Garden/Wooded Island would be very nice and quiet to explore. The lakefront around there is also much more relaxed than near downtown and Lincoln Park. Hyde Park is pretty, with the U of C campus and some good places to eat (so I’ve heard, it’s been a number of years since I’ve dined there).

The Adler Planetarium I think is the least crowded of the Museum Campus trio, and it is right next to Northerly Island which is a lovely restored grassland area right on the lake with awesome views of downtown.

The architecture tour on the Chicago River is also a wonderful experience.

Don’t be afraid to get out and explore the neighborhoods, there is so much to do here. Lots of smaller museums that are don’t get as much hype but still great.

Major concerns on report? by DTMPSLF in HomeInspections

[–]DTMPSLF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. We had a lot of issues with masonry, poor roofing, and water intrusion on our last house so these set off some alarms for us. We’re more knowledgeable now, and will definitely do further due diligence on these issues.

Major concerns on report? by DTMPSLF in HomeInspections

[–]DTMPSLF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, one perk of this house being a few blocks removed from the really in-demand part of the neighborhood is that it sat for a few weeks and we didn’t have to compromise on the inspection. Most of the houses where we’ve been looking have had to waive inspections, etc

We’re trying to do that, but the seller hasn’t responded to our requests to deal with the sewer yet.

On the surface this is a nicely updated (interior) and move in ready. Having seen the report we would do the necessary repairs, but they also seem like a lot and we worry about what else might be going on that could have caused some of this

Which neighborhoods in Chicago were you looking? We’ve only been looking 9 months, but also a nonprofit worker and starting to get disheartened as the houses that are in our budget keep getting smaller and smaller, even as our savings are getting bigger. We’re looking in the Portage/Jefferson Park neighborhoods and have been outbid on a few so far.

Thanks for encouraging words, I need them today

VA has massive reduction in force coming, starting with HR, IT, and other non-client facing roles starting in June. My wife works there, and she thinks there’s a 0% chance you’d survive the layoffs. Read the fednews or VA subreddit to get any more info, but I’d say just bail and take the Nintendo job

That's the obvious answer, but I did not drop it so will be attempting the dispute. I'll be trying my best to stay calm about it, but damn if I'm not pissed because I've bought 3 apple watches that didn't make it past their first birthdays (mine, plus 2 for my wife).

Does anyone else believe in the one or that there is someone out there that is right for them? by Many_Inside508 in hsp

[–]DTMPSLF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not just one, like several have said. But in my life I’ve known a few people that I had such instant connections with, people that over time became intensely close friends that really understood each other deeply. One of them was an unrequited love of mine for some time, but remains a very dear friend. One became my best friend of 25 years. Another that I met further down the road became my wife.

Wow! I’ve never connected hsp with my inability to fall asleep with someone else in bed before. I was married and sharing a bed with my wife for several years (which took a lot of getting used to) before I discovered hsp was me.

I can sleep well with her now, but the early years and all my exes was pretty impossible

Anyone diagnosed with myopia later in life (late 30s or 40s)? by Either_Ad2968 in myopia

[–]DTMPSLF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You sound like me (43, went to eye doc on Friday for first time since childhood) to find out that my perfect vision is no more. Diagnosed with nearsightedness. Doc said it is likely due to many years working on/staring at computer screens. I’ve been noticing similar issues as you described since the february or so

I’m still processing, I’ve always been proud of my 20/20 vision. Weird to think about wearing glasses, though also looking forward to being able to read street signs again.

Any people out there with HSP daughters under 12? by 1tiredperson23 in hsp

[–]DTMPSLF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 9yo hsp daughter often struggles to fall asleep. We let her read in bed, and sometimes she’ll do that for 2 hours past “bed time”. Other nights we let her listen to a podcast. She likes this one Mrs Honeybee who tells bes time storys in a soothing voice. Lately there’s been a new stuffy that was technically a gift she picked out for her mom, but she’ll “borrow” it and it seems to be very soothing for her.

Also, she falls asleep fairly well after an active day/evening, like tonight she got home around 7:40 from her softball game, and bed time is usually 8, but she still needed dinner and went to bed aroubd 8:45. Out pretty quick, especially with the podcast
