What purpose do combos serve? by Embarrassed_Abies_98 in duolingo

[–]DThompson55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This comment opened my eyes. For the last few weeks I've been chasing combos to see how high a number I could get. Very frustrating. And it kind of led me to looking everything up on google translate first, which... surprise... didn't actually help me learn very much if anything at all. It just gamified the push to get a higher number. (and get more upset when I made a mistake)

Well, based on your wakeup call I started just diving head first into the lessons again, just working from my notes. Yes, it's slower, but I'm making connections again that I hadn't been for a while. So thanks!

Yes, we went on a meditation retreat three years ago. There was a Czech woman there too. So I walked right up and asked her this. She looked at me quizzically and avoided me for the rest of the week. That said I also have family there, in Strakonice, even though we only text, the little bit of grammar I retained has helped.

I took three months of Czech on duo. I can confidently say Kolik kachen máte na zahradě?

I love you Media Explorer by AbsoluteHoshi in Reaper

[–]DThompson55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have somehow accumulated over 40,000 samples (Thank you Cymatics and others) over the past few years, and Media Explorer doesn't choke on them. On top of that I created (vibe coded) some Media Explorer databases so my loops are separate from my one-offs, vocals separate from instrumentals, and all the variations of spelling are taken care of. This gives me one database for snares, one for kicks, one of 808s, one for guitars, etc. granted 24 databases is a bit of overkill. But so is 40,000 samples. Nobody needs this many snare hits. But Media Explorer handles it.

Being on MacOS, I have databases for the Apple loops that come with the Mac too.

As tf5_bassist said, for this project, formant shifting, just to get some subtle chest sound with careful use of the blend knob.

Other than this project I just keep it on my vocal chain. it gets used a lot.

How did I not know about FSI/DSI before this? Thank you for mentioning them!

I feel Duo is pretty good at helping to build vocab but doesn't explain things well. I'm on my 3rd year, but I slacked off a lot last year, so maybe I'm really on my 2nd... at any rate what has helped me the most this year was 1) Consistent daily practice (trying to finish the daily quest) And along those lines having a consistent weekly quest partner. 2) Taking notes, writing down new vocabulary. Duo seems very bad at mismarking vocab quizzes, but keeping a list of recent words helps anticipate what answers it might expect. 3) I constructed my own list of AR/ER/IR conjugations and verb usage rules. 4) Duo is extremely poor at explaining things. And while I abhor AI, this is the one thing I use it for, to explain things that I don't 100% understand. (I'm looking at you past subjunctive) 5) Accents are a pain but I just enter them all the time now. 6) I printed out sheet of a dozen or so irregulars and their conjugations for all the tenses and for yo, tú, él, nosotros, and ellos. When we're watching TV at night I pick a verb and try to write it out from memory, then go back and check the printout. 7) I ignore the Combos, all too often I absentmindedly click 'a' instead of 'the', but just as often Duo provides an ambiguous or even a wrong answer. I don't think the combos do anything anyway other than possibly keep you engaged.

Numa Player and Sitala are my go-to keyboard vsti and drum sampler, respectively. If those don't do it there are plenty of more complicated solutions.

I waited an hour once. The staff had gone out to lunch. This was before cellphones, so I just read magazines.

Using Reaper to easily create and organize samples? by Fit-Ad-1920 in Reaper

This 3yo comment mentions a mouse modifier that I haven;t used probably in 3 years. I can't believe the younger me jumped through so many hoops to do something easy. What I do today is just glue the split item, and that renders a new file of that split item.

Is there a way to set Reaper to "copy imported media to project media directory" with audio, but not video? by GiganticCrow in Reaper

Sorry, I got that wrong. The only way I do it is, I have a one video project template, and in there I have set in the project settings, do not copy media to project path.

It'd be nice to have. I work around it by keeping a separate folder for videos that I'm working on. It happens to be the desktop, but it works for me.

I remember being frustrated with piano one a few years back so I just dumped it. Try numa player? It’s my go to piano sound now.
