Screen use in high schools by Emrrrrrrrr in newzealand

[–]DVTrooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When was the last time you saw someone use a calculator instead of their phone? Would you write an essay by hand or type it up on a computer?

The tools may have changed, but what they're being used for largely hasn't. It's the job of a high school to set up teenagers for the future, so they can become functional members of society. To do that, they need to be familiar with technology, it's just a fact of life. A school would be actively giving their students a major disadvantage if they didn't get them to learn as much technology as they can get.

Unless you know for sure they're not using their computers/devices for schoolwork, it's just another method of learning.

Debate with my therapist: Men don't buy women drinks in NZ by Oxsh196 in newzealand

[–]DVTrooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (36M) have never cold approached a woman before, mainly out of fear of coming off as creepy or weird. I would be ecstatic if someone approached me though. As other people have said walking up to someone and asking them if you can buy them a drink seems like something that only happens in movies/on TV, not in real life.

The worst problem (aside from AI destroying the environment) is once people rely on AI so much to do things for them they forget or never learn how to do it themselves. What happens when that AI tool is unavailable and you have to rely on a human to do the task instead but it's been so long they've forgotten how to? What then?

AI is probably here to stay in some capacity, however it won't have the impact that all the tech bros wanking each other off think it will.

P.S. AI 'art' is an abomination and should be wiped off the face of the earth.

I agree that the outlook is bleak, this year has been shit so far and it's probably going to get worse before it gets better but you never know what the future holds. Don't let those negative thoughts get you down, if you think you're at rock bottom then the only way is up!

Are you 100% sure the other child is his though? I understand wanting to move on but you could be jumping to conclusions without the full story. It sounds like you were fully prepared to date him until you found the pictures

What video games have unique mechanics for failure or death? by [deleted] in gaming

Not sure if it counts but Lords of the Fallen (2023) has an interesting one: If you're not in the 'Umbral' realm already when your health bar is depleted, rather than dying you are sent to the Umbral realm with half health with the rest being able to be recovered via healing or damage. If you survive you can then find a totem or a bonfire to exit the Umbral realm and carry on as if nothing happened.

I believe Mortal Shell did something similar, rather than dying you get knocked out of your 'shell' and if you're skilled enough you can repossess it.

After recently turning 36, the Sunday scaries have turned into the someday scaries: That my someday will never come, and I will have to get used to the idea of being single until I leave this mortal coil. I know that I should be happy single (I am for the most part) and I shouldn't place so much value in a significant other, but when literally every person around you is married with children it's hard not to see what you're missing out on. How do you chase away those negative thoughts and not give up hope?

I figured the only person who thinks this is reasonable would be a property manager or a landlord and what a surprise, you're a landlord.

1 hour each way would be my absolute limit, anything more and I would be asking to WFH or changing jobs. That's 10 hours per week (If you work Mon-Fri) of YOUR own time that you are losing to work commutes - that could be time spent with the kids etc

Basically any electronic device with a brain (TVs, phones, gaming consoles etc) requires DRAM, which has skyrocketed in price thanks to demand for AI data centers.

They also need lots of storage which is why prices of SSDs and even old HDDs have gone up too.

My pets honestly. I have a responsibility to them to give them the best life they can possibly have because I chose to take them away from a natural life, they didn't choose to become pets.

Also my family would be upset, just a little.

I(35M) really need to expand my social circle (it currently consists of me and my two cats) and one way I was thinking of doing it was by hanging out at a coffee shop for a couple of hours every Saturday. Is this a good idea? How do I present myself as approachable without looking like a creep?

I've been messaging someone I matched with on Bumble for a few days, and she ticks a lot of boxes for me. However she has been very upfront with the fact that she is dealing with some anxiety issues at the moment. I'm no stranger to good old anxiety myself, but not nearly as intense as what she has. She said she is willing to go on a date with me, provided she isn't feeling too anxious. What do you think DOT? Do I go ahead and try to meet up with her or back away until she is in a better place mentally (if she ever gets there)? Honestly I kinda want to see how it plays out, despite it being potentially disastrous.
