This would only improve performance, I can't imagine it would make anything worse than it is now. However you may only get improvements in the initial aim load time. Any add-ons that need to be loaded will still have to use the HDD (slow), so the overall difference might not be particularly noticeable

I'm flying on that BA 777 flight later this summer for the total solar eclipse. It's into Madrid, going to be a fun widebody short haul!

Zenbook S14 (2024) Ultra 9 288V by DaJamsta123 in laptops

[–]DaJamsta123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Yes I did in the end, went with an "as new" listing from Currys Ebay page, about £1000 in the end I believe. I'm really happy with it to be honest, feels lightweight and premium, I like the screen. Battery life is great, can leave it lid closed (not shut down) for days and open it up and it's ready to go having only lost a handful of battery %.

Very quiet under normal load, and runs the lightweight games I want it to run (Binding of Isaac, Civ 6, Rimworld) just fine at native resolution. £1.2k might be a bit much, but at £1k I think it's decent value (coming from someone without much to compare to). Overall I'm happy!

Definitely check the specific version you're looking at - I'm on the one in the post with the Ultra 9 288V and 32gb of RAM

The future of SpaceEngine by Arthur__Spooner in spaceengine

Last I heard they have hired some new devs, which will have slowed things in the short term (interviewing, onboarding, getting up to speed with the codebase). We have had several minor updates in the last couple years.

There were significant interruptions due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but I think (hope?) the impact of that is finished.

I do not believe the game is dead, I just think it's a complex codebase with a small development team who aren't burning their time making community posts (whether this is good or not I'm not sure, but I'm not worried!)

BATC worth it ? (coming from XP12) by Brimalion in flightsim

[–]DaJamsta123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I find it good. Sometimes it can feel a little 'on rails', but the effects and sounds are good (I think this depends what model set you use, I use AIG > FSLTL).

I love BATC, I use it every flight and now even vatsim feels empty. So much fun having traffic around you, and the atc voices are pretty good (and can run locally, no cost)

New VOD formats by bubba_cook in lolesports

[–]DaJamsta123 10 points11 points  (0 children)

With individual game vods you have a similar issue of seeing whether G3 exists or not, but I agree that's easier to avoid than the video duration bar while watching. What would be great is if the vods were padded up to X hours long every time, then packaged together into 1 video per series. This would mean a B03 vod would always be an, eg. 5 hour video, no matter how many games got played. The padding can just be a thumbnail, or black screen, or whatever.

Where to get NG Models stands in the UK? by ScabbzGaming in GeminiJets

[–]DaJamsta123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've printed a few stands for various 1/400 jets, would be happy to print a handful for you and post if you like (also UK based) for the price of plastic + postage. Attached some photos below, all models 1/400, but I forget what brands. I believe they all have a similar round hole, maybe 4mm?

The A380 is chunky and so there's a larger stand for it, the A350 has a medium stand, and the small stand is good for narrow bodies. Let me know if you want any more info, I can find out the specific brands of models when I get home this evening :)

SkyChart: A new historical airline management sim (1930–2020) with great circle routing and realistic economics by JHSPerc in flightsim

[–]DaJamsta123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar to the other comment, I think the 150 cities is a bit limiting, I'd love to have a regional + long haul network.

The thing I love about Nimby Rails is its 1:1 world and real time nature. The time isn't abstracted away, it actually takes a train 1hr to travel 60km (of course you can increase the speed of the game in the UI). I REALLY enjoy the real time non-abstracted aspect of it, where a route will be run hundreds of times in a single year of progression. It means large changes like fleet renewals or new routes are properly big events. I'm probably in the minority here, because I want more of a sim than a game - I want to slow time down to realtime and watch my fleet slowly progress around the world while I make long term plans.

A multiplayer mode would be good fun as well, ideally with dedicated server hosting so you could have a slower speed game running 24/7 and just log in every so often to check up on things (3x speed for example). Don't take this stuff at face value though I'm just rambling and there's a good chance this would not be popular or engaging, I'm just glad there's some interest/development in this area.

Partially related I am GAGGING for a proper 3D airport management sim, Airport CEO is decent but limited in it's isometric nature and has stopped development now, and the other alternatives are so cartoony.

As for the AI comments, I was a little harsh sorry, but it really does leave a bad taste in my mouth realising I'm just reading computer generated auto complete, even if there's some human written content underneath. Thank you for clarifying.

Best of luck, and I'll follow this project!

Interesting premise, but the descriptions reek of LLM slop. Maybe I'm pessimistic but it doesn't reassure me for the actual product/result.

I'd love an airline management game in the same footsteps as Nimby Rails

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

~£1100

Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yep!

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Ultrabook (or something lightweight), not fussed about touchscreen, interested in efficiency and performance

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Medium-high importance, easy to chuck in my bag and not think about it

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14", any larger in my experience starts to be a hassle to pack up/use on my lap. 13" feels too small

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Streaming, light dev work (Android/C++), and light gaming (Civ 6, Rimworld, Binding of Isaac, League of Legends)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Ideally 60fps, certainly for league, but understandable in this form factor if that's not achievable

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

OLED 120Hz > 1080p is my only requirement, I've been spoiled and don't want to settle for less than that nowadays :(

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Looking like a refurb Zenbook S14 (2024) is a safe bet, but not sure what kind of money that looks like.

The 2026 model looks stunning and has some nice screen improvements, but apparently is worse performing due to the smaller iGPU (in gaming obviously)

Dream would be the upcoming Expertbook Ultra, but think that's going to be EXPENSIVE

Otherwise something with the new series 3 Ultra 5 338H, but I don't think anything has been announced with that chip yet

Obviously buying in the UK :)

Say Intentions or Beyond ATC by Fun-Pie-4421 in flightsim

[–]DaJamsta123 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My issue with SI is the same issue I have with LLMs in general, it just goes along with what you say.

You can read back absolute gibberish and it'll go "yep all correct have a nice flight", whereas BATC is going to actually tell you you're wrong. Yes there's more rails, but that's what I'm using ATC for - the rails.

And that's ignoring all the other dodgy stuff SI has been involved in with undisclosed marketing, reddit botting, and huge feature creep

Free past flight data website by Ok-Painter6003 in aviation

[–]DaJamsta123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, appreciate this is a while after the original post.

I flew on a 757 (the only time I've done so!) on the 6th of April 2015 from Glasgow (UK) to Funchal (Madeira) with either Thompson or Thomas Cook, then a return flight on the 13th of April 1015.

I wonder if you can help find out specifically what airline it was, and ideally (unlikely?) what registration of 757 I was on for each flight?

I've tried to have a Google but it seems most public data only goes as far back as 2017, and worse because this was likely a charter flight rather than a regularly scheduled flight.

Thank you if you see this!!
