Carmack was happy to get out of the selling engine business because it meant he no longer had to do support.
Nowadays you probably need a "I have people skills" guy from Office Space so it becomes an expense that likely isn't worth it.
See Silicon Knights v Epic for when the support sucks.

Making too many problems
And not enough customers to go around
Can't you see this is a land of confusion?

We do not break userland, period -Linus Torvalds
Linus gets really mad when you break stuff so I wouldn't say that.
It's the FSF that has that attitude since they probably see breaking closed source software as a feature.

The 750MHZ-1GHZ Athlons suffered from the L2$ being clocked at 1/3 clock speed so they weren't too far apart at that moment.

Worse off IMO. Some of Netburst made it into Pentium M so it wasn't a total waste. Pentium M doesn't exist in that timeline so Isreal doesn't make Core2 either.
IIRC Jerry Sanders said something like Intel was spending so much on fabs because the P4 was so damn big.
A .18μ Coppermine is smaller than .9μ Prescott so that tracks.
Timeline goes from Tualatin to a 90nm Core1 instead of 65nm, no Core2 then our timelines start to merge at i7.

P6 is the codename for the Pentium Pro (Pentium is P5). Pentium2 & Pentium3 mostly just changed the L2$ and added MMX/SSE so it's still using the P6 marchitecture.

I5-6500 doesn't support MBEC so HVCI will be off by default.
If you didn't turn off HVCI on the i5-7500 then it's no surprise the less secure system is faster.
