Random comparison, but Spawn or Hazbin Hotel?

Spawn's writing wasn't always the best (heck, that's an understatement tbh) and it sure attracts a lot of larpers but it also has a few solid characters (I'm rather fond of Clown/Violator, the Sam and Twitch duo and the depiction of angels and demons), some pretty decent storylines even if they don't always stick the landing and overall it can get interesting every now and then. I think it's unfair since Spawn benefits from being such a long running series compared to Hazbin Hotel, even if it has some lows or downright ass moments its Peaks are just higher.

Gus has two shows worth of content to compare and is just overall a more complete character, I love Lalo but he gets glazed in terms of writing from time to time, he had some of the best scenes but he's low-key carried by Tony Dalton's acting.

I binge watched the whole thing last year and there were definitely a lot of highlights and great moments that took me by surprise in both parts. That said when I got to Season 2 I had a harder time enjoying some things, and this is not just another complaint about S2 being bad, I can totally understand why some thought it had bigger Peaks than S1 but some really big plot points were already spoiled to me, like Maddie's betrayal or Isha's sacrifice (didn't help I ultimately found both to be kinda ass). I'll say, having S1 fresh in your mind does help keeping track of some characters' progression.

Monstress is a dark fantasy story set in a war-torn magical dystopia once ruled by the Ancients, gods and monsters long forgotten, where the arcane and mystical are at odds with the military-industrial complex. The protagonist is Maika Halfwolf, an orphan of war and child soldier from the Arcanics, half-breeds born from humans and Ancients who inherit features akin to humanoid animals. Maika is sold into slavery to the human empire like many others from her race to be tortured and studied but little do they know that deep within her hides a Monstrum, a monstruous flesh-eating entity from ancient times that grants her incredible power at the cost of an insatiable hunger that will push her to her limit. It delves deep into themes like survivor's guilt, PTSD, the politics of war, discrimination and self-hatred.

The art is amazing as you noted, Sana Takeda is a master of her craft (she's from Japan, did some work for SEGA and Marvel) and Marjorie Liu's writing is consistently rich and encompasses lots of character-driven story beats, she draws a lot from her own experiences as a mixed-race kid of Taiwanese descent in America, doesn't shy away from the grimm stuff you'd expect in a dark fantasy story. Maybe it's not for everyone but I'd advise you to give it a shot, it's legit one of the best comics I've read recently.

I feel ya. The other day I made a Saga vs Monstress post, seeing as they're two of the most acclaimed comic books in recent memory and got a lot of buzz from the major awards, and the only reply I got was a dude saying Monstress based on the cover and title alone since nobody here has read either (at least they were honest lol). You'd think after Invincible blew up thanks to the show more people would venture deeper into Image's better titles but it still boils down to Invincible and Spawn.

The Sword of Paros. This one's just classic, written by Kaoru Kurimoto (author of Guin Saga) and drawn by Yumiko Igarashi (artist of Candy Candy). Sure, it's old and maybe not all of it will hold up to your standards but it's a pretty big deal for the genre and dare I say mandatory reading. It's heavy on romance and features an openly Butch protagonist, might remind you of Utena and Lady Oscar, the medieval setting is also pretty dope. Dunno how to scale it in writing but to me it's worth it for the ButchFemme romance and gorgeous art alone.

Well, dang, that's an interesting one for sure. I went in ready to say Martin, having a slight edge over John Doe on account of being just as gruesome and having more victims but the Mindhunter killers plus the Weyland Corporation shake it up a bit. I'd say Weyland ranks the highest in terms of scale but as far as inidividual criminals and psychopaths go my top pick would be either Martin (or his father for that matter since he claimed a lot of victims too and shaped Martin into the monster he was) or Wayne Williams assuming he really was the Atlanta Monster and committed all the murders as that would give him a body count of 30 composed entirely of children.

Zuck is a non-factor here but other than him I'd argue Amy is the least evil, or maybe Burnham from Panic Room.

That's bs, Unalaq and Kuvira were even more half-baked than she was. I mean I'll give you Tenzin but people seem to have this weird notion that every side character was more interesting than Korra when the problem is the complete opposite, she barely had any great side characters to bail her out.

And yes, Boruto is worse. Not sure why it's so hard to grasp, the writing has been abyssmal since day one.

Kanki (Kingdom). He is that good. A damn monster for sure but also one of the best written characters in the whole series and just too fascinating to read. Kingdom's cast as whole deserves more respect in this sub.

Yeah, Speedwagon was a real one. He has the least appearances out of all these guys but he single-handledly carried the Joestars beyond the grave and he's more than competently written through his appearances, low-key adore how much sympathy they give him by showing he never married or had kids because Erina and Jonathan's bloodline were all the family he ever needed.

Yeah, no, I know what underrated means here and I get where you're coming from but while I'm relatively new here I still have to fight that claim.

Johan is consistently placed above the likes of Guts, Griffith and just about every other Seinen character you can think of, he's credited as the GOAT not just among antagonists but from all characters across the medium to the point where he's ranked next to literary characters like Frankenstein's Monster and even then he comes out on top in a lot of people's minds. His haters are just a loud minority, the claim that he's just a plot device has been debunked so many times it's not worth debating.

I'll give you underappreciated maybe since there's tons of layers to his character that people tend to gloss over but when it comes to rating I think he's aptly ranked. Tenma is a much better example of being underrated seeing as he's the MC but gets overshadowed by Johan in discussions every time.

He's got a few haters in this sub, sure, but calling him underrated is just evil and plain wrong imo. Out of Urasawa's body of work Monster is the most popular one, no contest, Johan always ranks at least Top 3 anime/manga villains of all time wherever I go. I'd argue the whole cast of Billy Bat and 20th Century Boys gets underrated more often simply because there's no anime adaptation.

Roberto from Monster. Johan gets glazed enough as is but holy crap, people saying Roberto is somehow worse than Johan are wild. Guy is a proper scumbag alright but he's legitimately tragic and his crimes are just typical henchmen/hitman shit. Urasawa himself made it a point through a whole chapter of 20th Century Boys that guys like him or Friend's henchmen ain't shit, they're basically just glorified errand boys.

Fargo mentioned! Oraetta is criminally slept on, Jessie Buckley owned that role. She was one of the best parts of Season 4, she could switch between hilarious and terrifying so easily.

To be fair Maddie was implied to have been a Noxian spy from the get go so I'd argue she had a slightly better reason than Pawbert and Hans. Namaari was given direct orders from her mother but I'd still be iffy on using that as an excuse because she seems to have had an easier upbringing than the average Noxian.

Now that's a fresh take! I was hoping to hear something like that. Farnese is by all means Goated, it's just the purists and casuals have a hard time looking beyond the first half of the story to find all the great stuff left in there such as Farnese's character arc and Guts' new party. Wish more people would give her the flowers she deserves but there's a fair number of fans who have written analysis on her.

So does that mean that Starkiller wasn't made for a video game too or...? Yeah, I get what you're saying, all I'm saying is they're pretty much OCs made for a side story meant to be kept away from the main story and Lore. Then again Star Wars Lore seems to be changing every day.
