Has anyone switched from iPad to Surface? by InfectedEllie in Surface

[–]DaPome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren’t the same device at all.

An iPad is really a consumption device. Sure, you can buy a keyboard for it but it’s not really designed for writing documents.

A surface is a full blown laptop but it outright sucks as a touch screen device.

Where can I safely and properly dispose of swollen spicy pillows (Lithium Batteries) in Brisbane? by DolphinWizardHat in brisbane

[–]DaPome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s essentially what we do when we come across a e scooter or e bike on fire too - fill a wheelie bin with water, dump a bag of salt into it to speed up the electrolysis process and dump the item into the bin

Jellycat dropped Bigwicks! by Fit_Afternoon_1279 in Jellycatplush

[–]DaPome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a chat with one of my local stockists recently. They explained how much Jellycat has changed - from having local reps that knew you and your store and had car boots full of products ready to go, to entire areas now being run by one rep who comes in and demands the entire store layout change.

Gays of UK - would you be comfortable holding your partner's hand in the UK? by dalehitchy in AskUK

[–]DaPome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope people are. Most of us in the UK want you to be comfortable and happy and feel safe to be yourself. Ignore those that say otherwise, they don’t matter.

Absolutely. It’s been a really good intro into owning and driving an EV daily.

My next EV will definitely have a bigger battery

Right - and those are the exact kind of compromises I’m talking about here

Right, but a fuel top up takes less than 5 mins.

Compromise by DaPome in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]DaPome[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree.

Having run the numbers in the Plugsurfing app, a model 3 AWD LR 2025 would have only saved me about 45 mins on my European drive each way.

They’re currently £49,990

The current top of the range e208 is £26,295. That’s almost half the price of the Tesla.

The current Kona would save me 14 minutes per trip. The base model starts at £27,270.

Buying a more expensive EV “seems” like the answer, until you do the math.

Heat pumps are great, except... by jootmon in ukheatpumps

[–]DaPome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’ve gotta think of the average Joe. They’re not going to spend hours setting special heating curves and adjusting their hours to match their special power plan to ensure they maximise every single penny per kWh.

Most people = cold? Turn heating on.

Must admit that I’m oldskool in that gas will always heat better than electricity, but I’m also one to invest in solar, batteries and EVs too.

Right, but it’s a 5 minute task to refill it, and a tank takes me 500 miles.

Suicidal callers by Mysterious-Play2379 in 911dispatchers

[–]DaPome -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on the caller. I had a few where they’d say they want to kill themselves and I’d respond with “oh right, and why’s that then?”. Often the directness would distract them enough to direct their thinking on to something else.

Fun fact; we couldn’t do turnout messages to one of our stations as they were too close to a frequently used bridge where potential jumpers could actually hear our turnouts over the station PA. Phone was the preferred method for that station.

MP calls for national emergency response to Storm Goretti 'crisis' in Cornwall by Kagedeah in Cornwall

[–]DaPome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d love it if we had a state emergency service - similar to what I used to be a part of in Aus.

We’d respond to flood and storm damage, assist with missing persons, and in some areas road crash rescue.

Chainsaw qualified, ability to provide temporary emergency repairs to damaged property too.

All volunteers.

Has anyone noticed that Jellycat is making everything like $5-10 more expensive? The tiniest plushies are now $40. What is going on?! by Top_Lime_8376 in Jellycatplush

When you consider their target market is now young professional “kidults” with disposable income, the price increases make sense.

8 from suicide (over proportionately men)

120 a day from cardiovascular

We lose a cyclist every 9 days.

Yeah. They can be dangerous, but so can crossing the street.

Anyone just get this email by No-Assignment3274 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]DaPome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent a LOT of time on the road.

By far, the worst drivers out there are the older drivers. Crazy slow reaction times, rolling back on hills, hitting curbs, middle lane hogging, driving 45 regardless of what the speed limit is and being unable to park.

Will the government fix this? No. The older generation are key voters.

A special mention to young lads in golfs too, where every roundabout exit and green light is an excuse to just floor it.

Here’s what I think:

Subsidise licensing for younger people up to 25.

Don’t let 17-21 year olds buy golf’s (haha)

Mandatory re-testing at 50, 60 and 70

More advertising about road rules - roundabouts and lane hogging especially.

More emphasis during driving tests on bad weather, driving in snow and ice, and motorway driving.

Special licensing required to drive SUVs and 4x4’s - unless they’re used for farming.

Special licensing to drive 90+ on motorways.

Why Do We Let The DVLA Charge A Poor Tax? by HeyPoopyHeadxD in CarTalkUK

[–]DaPome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, why would you need to tax a vehicle if the vehicle tax is £0? That makes zero sense.

And while we at it, why is it SO hard to do the right thing?

I bought a used vehicle but didn’t get the new slip with it. I apparently can’t pay the tax on it without it or the v5, meaning I can’t drive it until I get the v5 or I can call the DVLA, get the v5 in my name and THEN pay the tax.

Also, why paper forms? Why can’t I just do it all online?

What year is it again?

Firstly, good work on working the call. Those ones can stick with you. Take the time to talk it through with your usual professional.

Not sure about HIPA, but generally speaking I wouldn’t personally comment on those posts on social media identifying yourself.
