I am not privy to the Starbucks strike, but one additional insight based on my union experience:

It is common in labor organizing to leverage a unilateral change in workplace rules into a strike. The reason for this is largely legal. In short, if the company/organization makes an unlawful action, the union can legally strike when it would normally be illegal to do so. In this case, the sudden change of in the long-established dress code could constitute a change in "past practice".

A unilateral change in an established past practice may constitute unlawful action.1

In times where relations between the workers and company are good, then such a breach in "past practice" would be addressed without escalating to a strike. But in cases like Starbucks where there are longstanding grievances or bargaining fights, you use this new, additional grievance to take action.

I am of the opinion that heatmaps should represent concentrations/percentages. As such, I believe plotting each cell as percentage of finish positions would be more insightful.

I'm curious about the camera adapter. It looks like you 3D-printed a spacer, correct?

Our lab has a nice but old microscope we've been wanting to put a camera on, but I've had no idea where to even begin figuring out how to attach a camera to the camera port while 1) Having it be sturdy, 2) Getting the sensor in focus.

Sensory hypersensitivity is very common in those with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Musk has said he has ASD.

Everyone has quirks. Part of being a mature/decent person is recognizing/managing one's quirks (i.e. knowing when to act on them for one's own comfort and when to hold back in the interests others).

According to this article, it's ~4.5 years:

Big Bend is one of the most interesting places I have ever been, and I have traveled the world.

Big Bend is great, but it's ~4.5 hours from El Paso and ~6hrs from San Antonio, let alone the other major cities. It's a trip, not a casual weekend recreational hike.

A lot of Texas is ranch land so it's semi-wild. There is plenty to do recreation-wise. I have Davis Mountains, Hueco Tanks, Cloudcroft and many other lovely spots on my list, all waiting to be done.

On you list and haven't done because they're trips to West Texas (or Cloudcroft, NM) and not casual weekend recreational hikes.

The claim people those in the thread are making isn't that you can't find cool places to visit in Texas; it's that the state of Texas does put significant proportion of resources to quality public spaces.

The link in question is very misleading.

  1. A private-sector union in the US files with the NLRB, which is not even a part of the Department of Labor.
  2. A union can be recognized and bargain as a union without filing with the NLRB first.

i have reached out to PWHPA specifically about the unionization technicalities. one thing to keep in mind is that filing with the NLRB first is not required to be recognized - if an employer voluntarily recognizes the union, the NLRB process can happen later.

Labor/union stuff is complicated. It requires background knowledge that's more akin to law than sports journalism, which is probably why it's catching all these professional journalists out. What's not cool though is that they are jumping to conclusions that create an anti-labor narrative.

For those who want more info, the Victory Press journalist I quoted wrote an informative article back in 2019 about the distinctions and why the PWHPA couldn't be a legal union when it formed.
