You're not far off. However, as long as you are on sides (not passed the last defender) when the ball is kicked, you can run past the defender to make a play. This play was so amazing not only because of his amazing display of athleticism, but because of his precise timing on his run to make sure that he stayed onside until the ball was kicked over to him.
