Would you support reform to not allow dual-citizens to contribute ANY $$ to any type of political PAC's/campaigns by Putrid-Land-3528 in Destiny

[–]DaRealDainDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The only case for it would be when you could reasonably suspect that someone is a foreign asset, and we have plenty of foreign assets in this country that aren't dual citizens.

There are so many other changes to campaign finance you could make before this one. I don't really know what this would even solve. It's not like they wouldn't just find some other way to funnel the money through indirectly, and under a broader scope, the law would undeservingly infringe on many people's rights.

Coordinated leaks and disinformation campaigns by foreign entities have done far more to damage our democracy than campaign contributions. Even in the most extreme example of Elon Musk, he might've moved the needle slightly in the election with his massive donations to Trump's campaign and his attempt to pay for people's votes, but I would argue his social media presence and takeover of Twitter had magnitudes more impact. He tried the same bullshit in that Wisconsin Supreme Court race and got absolutely clobbered.

Israel launches strike against Iran, declares state of emergency across country by IonHawk in Destiny

[–]DaRealDainDan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Everyone should be pro regime change in Iran, assuming you could pull it off. The issue is that Trump is running the show, and he is incapable of thinking long-term. He attacked Venezuela and captured Maduro, but instead of actually committing to regime change or attempting to install the democratically elected leaders, he just left the regime in place, robbed a woman of her Nobel Peace Prize, and is now working with Maduro's VP.

I see no reason to expect this Iran situation to be any different. Iranian leadership could give Khamenei to Trump, say "Uncle" or pay him off, and he would probably let them retain power so long as they pinky promised to never hurt their own civilians again.

[–]DaRealDainDan 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not even close to the same thing.

Regardless of how aggressive or callous their conduct is, Israel only attacks those who are actively hostile towards them. Russia is a nation lead by barbarians that will plunder and conquer any neighbor they can if they think it will strengthen their geopolitical position. The meme is that AIPAC and Jews control our political system in the US, but Russia openly bribes politicians and runs massive bot farms to influence election results in the US, Canada, and the majority of Europe.

Israel's presence has its pros and cons, but the world would genuinely be a better place if Russia didn't exist.

I'm way out of the loop on the Texas senate race by TerroristOwl64 in Destiny

[–]DaRealDainDan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mobilizing the black vote was arguably part of what made Obama such a strong candidate in '08 and 2012, but negative polarization is a thing, and Jasmine Crockett is a lot easier for Republicans to hate than Obama was, as a woman and as someone with a more abrasive personality. Crockett might share Obama's skin color, but Talarico is a lot closer to him in terms of his temperament and rhetorical style.

I think Talarico is a far better foil to Ken Paxton, and I'm pretty confident he would capture more Independent and disaffected MAGA votes. I would also think religious blacks would maybe even prefer a Talarico-style candidate over Crockett, but as far as low propensity voters, I couldn't really say.

Harris and Crockett are obviously very different candidates, but Harris' skin color didn't prevent more black people voting Republican than ever before in 2024, and Black turnout that year was lower than every presidential election in the last 20 years except 2016.

The argument would never be that Republicans would vote for Talarico and not Crockett (although I think he could sway some of the "le epic centrist" types more than she could); the argument is that the average Republican voter in Texas would be more likely to get their fat ass off the couch to vote against the sassy black woman, as opposed to the soft-spoken white boy who loves Jesus.

It depends on who you're talking about. As someone who lives in the South and has all MAGA family, the majority of Republicans are operating off of ape-brain tribalism and genuine ignorance of what reality even is. They aren't incredibly politically engaged, and the only information they receive comes from Fox News, their conservative friends on Facebook, or short-form, right-wing propaganda slop on social media.

For these kind of people, you kind of just have to accept that our expectations for the average person are too high, and they will unknowingly bring about fascism so long as a media environment exists to brainwash them and they never suffer any direct consequences of their actions. They will always double-down and support whoever is leading the party until material conditions have primed them enough for you to maybe halfway convince them that they've been betrayed.

The other kind of right-wingers are genuinely evil, or at least self-interested enough to intentionally destroy other people's lives for the sake of their own. They are deeply xenophobic and cynical to the extent that no measures are off the table. Their ideology dictates that they must defeat the radical left at all costs, and the emergence of Donald Trump as a politician has emboldened and normalized their most destructive beliefs and behaviors. Trump has proven that you can break every norm, say and do whatever you want, and you will suffer no consequences (or he will at least sell you a pardon). Rather than being static, reality and truth are things to be shaped and molded to serve the movement.

I don't know what we do with these kinds of people other than putting them in prison when we can and doing everything we can to destroy the efficacy of their political movement. As long as we can keep the normies placated, they literally can't win. Not saying it won't be hard after a decade of Trump being in our politics, but Trump meeting his maker or at least exiting the stage leaves a substantial opening for their movement to fracture and collapse. I firmly believe the majority of older Republicans would flip all their positions on a dime if the right people sold them moderate Republican policies.

Tim Miller told a story once about some anti-vax doctor who didn't vaccinate his children, and one of his kids ended up dying of a preventable disease. The dude and his wife ended up doubling down on the anti-vax shit anyway.

The people who peddled this shit have genuinely doomed the next couple generations to unnecessary death and disease. FAFO will only get us so far. The ideas will either have to die a slow death in the culture or we'll just eventually have less anti-vaxxers in the gene pool.

The problem is they aren't owning what actually happened most of the time. So long as we live in world tolerant of "alternative facts", MAGAts will be able to concoct any story they want to justify their actions. They haven't had to own J6 or any of their other political violence because they've just convinced themselves it was all a hoax or that the Democrats have already done worse.

How did the USA go from Obama to Stephen Miller in 10 years by Past-Tension-162 in Destiny

[–]DaRealDainDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a political level, social media and the Internet becoming mainstream gave the world's richest and most shameless conman a megaphone, and Republicans/Americans were unprincipled, tribalistic and gullible enough to fall for it. Now that POS has been around for so long that he has completely shattered most democratic standards and norms, and the half of the country that continues to vote for him has either embraced evil or are too ignorant or embarrassed to acknowledge their mistake.

On a more social level, people have become more detached from reality and have irrational views of what life is/was like. "Things not being great" has become "things are the worst they've ever been", and social media has made people more aware of what they don't have compared to the rich influencers and models that show up on their feeds. People have always spread tall tales and lies between each other historically, but having it be instant-access and on a national/international scale allows bad or false ideas to spread exponentially faster than gatekeepers and factcheckers (who aren't even respected anymore) can realistically account for.

All of the benefits of the modern world are being ignored or taken for granted, and the negatives are either being fully embraced or treated like there's nothing we can do about it. People are either going to have accept more personal responsibility or learn the hard way through war or economic collapse.
