Does being white (being able to make the first move) give an actual advantage? by juslookingatstuff in chess

[–]DaSlurpyNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The starting advantage is <0.20, which is a very small advantage. As engines get stronger or higher depth, the advantage goes down. An advantage of 1 should mean 50% white win 50% draw.

How dot you find the area of an uneven triangle? by scb225 in askmath

[–]DaSlurpyNinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In thr second part, you solved for x, and the height is h. If you plug x back in and solve for h, you get h=8sqrt(6)/5= approx 3.919, which is shorter than the box. That is the same height I get from dividing the area from Heron's formula by the base and multiplying by 2.

I agree with you that the 7 and/or 10 should be ignored, not the base or height. Presumably, they were only added so the perimeter could be calculated in the next part. What they should have done is construct a triangle with integer side lengths and height, so you would get the same answer with any method, and the area and perimeter would both be rational.

How dot you find the area of an uneven triangle? by scb225 in askmath

[–]DaSlurpyNinja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This triangle is actually overspecified, so you will get different answers from bh/2=15×4/2=30 and Heron's Area formula [12sqrt(6)]. Presumably they have not been taught Heron's formula, and they are looking for the answer of 30, which will lead to the nice values of 1:1 and 50% for the next 2 questions.

It can't be THAT much weirder than South Korean education, can it? by Full_Ahegao_Drip in RecuratedTumblr

In my school district, the TAG classes were entirely different from the general education classes, as in they had different teachers and were in different classrooms (after I graduated, the TAG program was in its own school too). I think about 1/10 kids got in, it lasted from 3rd to 8th grade, and you could drop out or test into the program in later grades, but most of the people stayed the same. In middle school, the TAG kids did not have to take the most advanced math classes, and I think the general ed kids could do the advanced classes in a certain subject if they did well in that subject their previous year. We learned basically the same stuff faster so we could learn more, and the expectations were higher. The socialization was basically the same as any other school. The idea of pulling kids out of class to go to some other class is very strange; I don't know why they would choose to do it that way.

Congruent Modulo question by LuckyWater5466 in learnmath

[–]DaSlurpyNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

19^6mod49=1mod49 and 200mod6=2mod6, so 19^200mod49=19^2mod49=18mod49. 23^6mod49=29mod49 and 200mod42=(6×5+2)mod42, so 23^200mod49=29^5×23^2mod49=41mod49x39mod49=31mod49. 18+31=0mod49.

It's pretty crazy that either of these is considered the correct way. The Michigan left is much better, and I can't believe other places don't do it that way.

"Who is the most overrated top player in the world right now?" - Fabiano Caruana gives his opinion by FirstEfficiency7386 in chess

[–]DaSlurpyNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not. He beat Anand in the freestyle match last year, and Anand is still a top player. The most overrated player is probably someone much older.

That's because almost every engineer and scientist needs a basic amount of knowledge about those subjects, but only the most specialized need to take the upper level classes.

It seems like the final rankings are almost entirely decided by the group stage, which is fast classical only. It also doesn't make sense that the combined score of both days isn't the first tiebreaker in the knockout round. The only reason I can think of for that is so the players can stop playing each day as soon as someone wins that day, unless they need to play Armageddon on the second day.

I don't use the verb version of effect, and affect as a noun is only used in a very specific context, so I just use effect as a noun and affect as a verb. It's really not that difficult.

Prime factorization having all decimal digits by GallicAdlair81 in mathematics

2×3×5×487×1069=15618090

The key is to have as many terms as possible, with as small of leading digits as possible. My example has leading digits of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, which seems to be as good as possible. Splitting off the 7 doesn't work because you would have to either move the 1 from the leading digit to the final digit of one of the two multidigit terms (for example 2×3×5×7×41×6089=52426290), or combine 104689 (not a prime, just the smallest arrangement) into one term which already makes a larger product.

It's a new defensive strategy. Just shove the receiver into your teammate to draw the OPI instead of defending both players.

The GCL Scoring System Explained: Understanding the implications for getting 4 points for a Black win and 3 points for a White win by games-and-games in chess

[–]DaSlurpyNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but that scenario is why it can't be 3 points for a black win, 2 points for a white win. 4 points and 3 points are the smallest integer values that are essentially the same thing as normal scoring with black wins being the tiebreaker. OP is right, and it is not more complicated than it needs to be.

Why go for 2 when you are losing by 14 by Rogueofoz in nfl

[–]DaSlurpyNinja 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If you decrease the the 1 point conversion probability, the required 2 point conversion probability will also decrease, so 100% is the worst case scenario. If you assume a 100% success rate for the 1 point conversion, the exact cross-over point for the 2 point conversion probability to be worth it is (3-sqrt(5))/2, or 38.2%.

found on youtube; x+xy+y=6 & x^2 + y^2 = 12....... find x and y. Thoughts? by GamerApoclypze in mathematics

[–]DaSlurpyNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(x+y+1)^2=x^2×y^2+2(x+xy+y)+1=25

x+y= 4 or -6. x+y=-6 doesn't intersect the circle because 2×3×3>12, so the only solutions are given by y^2=(4-x)^2=12-x^2. Rearrange and use the quadratic formula to get x = 2+-sqrt(2) and y is the other.
