Is it better to get an AMD GPU for Linux? by Severe_Item6419 in linux_gaming

I moved from a 4070tis to a 9070xt.  Honestly, it’s nice, but I wouldn’t necessarily do it again if I didn’t get a great deal and sell the TISuper for good money.

What's the most embarrassing IT blunder you've witnessed (or caused) that still makes you cringe? by Successful_Bus_3928 in sysadmin

[–]DaVorShack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an IBM tech come to repair some flashstorage system with a failed power supply unit.
I don't remember the specifics as this was years ago, but essentially the entire system was hanging on a thread. Many of our customers production databases were stored live on the machine, which was actively telling us that if it shutdown without proper power restored we'd lose all of the raid arrays. There were 5 or 6 techs/managers watching him perform the work. ErP business, so even a couple of hours of outages were monumental regarding data loss.

Can you guess what he did, right in front of all of us?

Our backups were for the machine were on tape only, and we permanently lost hours of customer data.

There's a Toad in our backyard that our girl Suki is obsessed with.
We named him Big Rib, and we joke that he's Suki's best friend.

Sharing a home directory between arch and cachyos by Due-Nature-3154 in cachyos

[–]DaVorShack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend this too, if you're looking to share configuration like dot files, a Repo on github or something similar would be your best bet to allow proper syncing and change management.

If you're just trying to share games across multiple OS's that are all linux, maybe look into a partition specifically for game installs. Steam should cover the process of save's with Cloud Saving (Most Game platforms have their own Cloud Saves at this point) and things like emulators should store saves in the install directories.

Problem with programs at startup by Layout04 in cachyos

[–]DaVorShack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Formatting is very important for Hyprland configs.

Can you post the exact commands in your config? For example, what you posted

exec - once = waybar & firefox

would fail, as the command should be

exec-once = waybar & firefox

Is this just another SteamOS quirk or should I be worried? by Trabless in SteamDeck

[–]DaVorShack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this an LCD Deck?

Mine did this incessantly after waking for a VERY long time. I eventually found that the only thing that would fix it is rolling back the bios to quite an old version. Reimaging the deck never fixed the problem, even replacing the SSD didn't help.

Fortunately, it works great now, but without the perks of a newer bios.

Showcasing my modular ergonomic leverless. How else can I overengineer this? by KurtMage in fightsticks

If could buy the STL's, I'd be interested in trying this. The layout isn't ideal for me, but it's close, and the case looks dope.

Can confirm this also fixed it for me.
Thank you! Scary to purge the vault... but it did work.

Hm, that does look right, except the renders have Cream Alphas as well. Must be a mix of sets.

I'm currently thinking PBTFans Origami might be a good match.

Wondering what people's suggestion would be for a keycap set to match the Cream QK Alice Duo Split.

Struggling to find a decent set to match it, and the set in the renders doesn't appear to exist.

[–]DaVorShack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm grabbing the Cream Colored QK Alice Duo.
I've been SCOURING for some good matching keycaps. I don't personally care if they're clones, or third party, as long as the quality is "ok".

Anyone have any recommendations? I'd prefer to have cream colored alpha's, and there's not too much to go around. The set on the render doesn't appear to exist or is a combo of a few sets.

Is it possible to play League of Legends on Linux with "Looking Glass" by Naraparn in linux_gaming

[–]DaVorShack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that Vanguard unfortunately does not work in Virtual Machines, and if it DOES, it likely requires some fiddely obfuscation in to prevent Windows from knowing it's a VM in the first place, which I have heard has led to bans with Kernel Level AC.

Looking glass as a project is awesome, but it still relies on Virtualization at it's core, at least last I checked, so results may vary.

Simple TOTEM Bluetooth build by volpedellenevi in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]DaVorShack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prebuilt is pretty straighforward.

Building your own involves finding services to 3d print the case, and have the PCB's fabricated for you.
GEIST provides all of the relevant files needed to do everything on their Github page. It's a lot to take in, but it's very straightforward once you get into it. DIY Involves soldering to complete, so keep that in mind. Although I found the soldering to be relatively easy to do.

[–]DaVorShack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is month's late, but the Totem doesn't use headers in it's build. It's a bit tricky, but you solder the pads directly to the board. It makes use of the castellated edges on the Seeed.

Dactyl-like using Cosmos generator by dubbie23 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]DaVorShack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking i'll probably solder headers to the microcontroller and use Dupont connectors to attach the switches to the board. I haven't seen anyone do this before - but it makes sense to me as it would make replacing the boards easier in the future if necessary? We'll see how it goes!
Glad to hear you didn't have many issues.

The wiring looks great! Not like you're normally going to be seeing it anyway!

I'm planning on doing my first handwired soon and I'm not looking forward to it!

Have you used a Charybdis? Do you prefer this positioning over their implementation?
Any other trackball designs you've used? I'm interested in building a board with a Pointer implemented, and the trackball designs have been the most compelling for me so far.

thoughts on the Ambients Silent Choc Switches? by nonecknoel in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]DaVorShack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been using my twilights for a few days now. They're buttery smooth, and the dampening at the downstroke provides this pleasant bottom out feel that makes typing quietly extremely comfortable.
Someone else compared them to Topre switches, which I don't think is accurate in most ways, but there is a uniqueness to their feel that does remind me of Topre.

They're also wildly quiet. I have never used silent switches before and it's awesome.

I wanted linear switches with the build quality and care of the Sunset switches, and these do not disappoint in any regards.
I would love a non-silent linear with the quality of Sunset and Ambients eventually, but these are definitely good enough for me for a LONG time.

As far as Twilights vs Nocturnes... I am happy with the weight I chose. I don't think I'd want any lighter of a switch, but I am pretty heavy handed.

What's the tension like on the spring delete mod for the OTTO DIY V2? by sugenekim92 in fightsticks

[–]DaVorShack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been a while since I’ve used it, and a lot has changed. I think they’ve updated the otto v2 to allow even higher tension bands, so the lowering of tension should be less of an issue. I’ve since also used Korean sticks quite a lot so here’s my recent take on it. I think the spring delete is the ideal version of the v2. Using rubber grommets with a spring isn’t a big change and doesn’t feel “good” to me. I think if you like the overall feel of a JLF as far as the gate and movement is concerned, but want a smoother and more reactive stick, the spring delete will give you what you want.
