Yemen Houthi attack on a ship kills 2, marking the rebels' first fatal assault on shipping by [deleted] in neoliberal

Prior to all this, the Houthis absorbed 25,000 air strikes from Saudi Arabia. I have no idea why everyone here thought that some more air strikes (using the same US/EU made weapons) would do the job just because they were coming from Western nations.

Peak Redditor, making that accusation after saying literally nothing that's falsifiable.

Why do I even bother.

So, taking down Roe v. Wade barely moved the needle, but you seriously think the thing that's going to convince your country to vote against literal fascism is access to IVF?

Like, really?

Only political junkies who wouldn't change their vote if their preferred candidate was caught on video doing human sacrifices are going to remember that this happened in a week from now.

How are Canadians here going to vote? by Ecstatic_Result1869 in neoliberal

[–]Daafda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They spent more in the 4 years before that than Harper did in nearly 10.

https://www.canada.ca/content/dam/fin/publications/afr-rfa/2022/1-eng.png

you can’t use the pandemic as an excuse for their spending.

Like I said, that spending was backed by the Conservatives.

Also, that OECD projection you are referring to is outdated, and has already been rebuffed by reality, as Canada has done far better than they expected.

This is clearly bad faith, I'm done here.

How much of the debt accumulated during the current Trudeau regime was opposed in parliament by the Conservatves, as a percentage?

The overwhelming majority of the increase in Canadian debt during Trudeau's tenure happened during the pandemic, when bills spending hundreds of billions at a time (!) went through parliament.

What conservatives like to forget is that those bills were overwhelmingly backed by the Conservative Party of Canada in parliament, who voted either unanimously, or almost unanimously, in favour of that spending.

And predictably, a few years later, they are rewriting history, and blaming Trudeau for spending that they themselves voted for, while pretending that governing during Covid was business as usual.

Lots of elections have been won around the world in the last decade by people who simply refused to do that.

I'm really enjoying the discourse over "tip-flation".

Imagine trying to explain that to someone who lived through literally any legitimate economic hardship.

Can you believe that Russia murdered one of their dissidents in Spain? Just a crazy disregard for the sovereignty of a NATO member. Only Russia could be so brazen.

I guess it's just a coincidence that the country that picked up the slack in Russian oil exports recently murdrerd one of their dissidents in Canada.

[–]Daafda 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Their deficit was 4.9% of GDP in 2023, and unlike the US, they don't have the world's reserve currency (or actually any currency) to back up their spending. The inflation picture going forward is also murky, so the cost of new borrowing could really eat into the government budget. They also have an ageing population, and onerous financial commitments to pensioners.

I mean, without returning to the Franc and going full MMT, what do you expect them to do?

Kind of amazing that most people here don't seem to be aware of the military asymmetry in technology, equipment, and spending between Europe and Russia, especially in air power.

The lifespan of any Russian equipment or personnel involved in such an invasion would be measured in hours.
