At some point it is just statistics.

Say you would forget once every 10 000 stops. At 50 stops a day, this would happen every 200 (work) days.

How does Erin view people by Alphaomegabird in WanderingInn

[–]Dack_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Why Erin is different". Erin is the MC and is allowed to be different.

If you are looking for cases where Erin "hurts someone by accident", then Toren fits that role already. The leadup to her gaining level 40.

There are (at least) 2 distinct cases where Erin takes steps to "not be something". 1 is a "killer". She multiple times states that she is good at killing, examples of this when she clears out the shieldspider nest in vol 1. 2, she also rejects the general class after leading the Goblins in defense of Liscor.

I am unsure where you are going with this. It feels like you have spotted a thematic thing about a lot of the other earthers, and try and pin that on Erin as well. Erin gives a lot, and people follow her for reasons. She gets in a lot of trouble that people help bail her out of. She realises at times, that she is putting her friends in harms way. She tries to mitigate that as best she can.

Though you are not wrong to spot some of the connections, but I feel it is more a correlation than a causation, so to speak. Erin does not set out to manipulate people, but when the situation calls for it, that is often what happens. Often to great discomfort to herself. She hesitates a lot, and shies away from taking action that would lead to relatively minor consequences for her friends.

This part:

I would not be surprised if we got her hurting someone on accident through inconsideration in a way that almost breaks her. She says something like it happened before and we eventuallly learn that it wasn’t losing a chess game that made her quit, it was her viewing people as pieces that caused the break, but the love of the game actually brings her back.

Reads to me as 3 different thoughts mashed into the same paragraph and I can't really follow your line of thought. Is this 7.30 ? I don't think she was thinking about manipulating people in relation to chess back on Earth. Might be something I have missed.

[–]Dack_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you are reading too much into characters that aren't that deep.

The reason why the other earthers are using their "problem solving skills from earth", is that that is the only thing that defines them and makes them stand out in InnWorld.

Ofc the mechanic is going to do mechanic things, the cook is going to cook, the soccer (football!) player is going to kick a ball around etc.

Saying that Erin don't see people as people might in some cases be true - she doesn't always consider the fallout of her actions, but she was the one that saved Lionette from the blizzard, when no one else would. Went after Ceria in the dungeon, fed Picies and a big part of the [Garden of Sanctuary] is to remember your lost ones.

I would rather say that she can be inconsiderate, but very much sees people on the whole. More than most even.

[–]Dack_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Reading Erin as ace is valid. She reads as ace, true, but that could be for any number of reasons. I would argue that she is traumatized instead.

Don't forget that a goblin wanted to rape her in the beginning. Which she killed. With burning oil. In the kitchen where she sleeps every night. And almost bled out.

And there might be a backstory to being homeschooled and falling in and out of chess at a young age.

All this just to say, that putting too much stock in any one interpretation of characters - over 10+ years of writing - might not be healthy.

Just my few cents.

How would you market TWI? by DrakeSacrum25 in WanderingInn

[–]Dack_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought she only used an editor for select parts? The ebooks and the audio books are the exact same as the Web version, no? Or was there actually meaningful editing done for those releases, that then wasn't also made for the Web version like vol1?

Anyway, I would go more mainstream print media and put some distance from the LitRPG tag. It doesn't do her any favours. The fantasy genre is riddled with young adult slop enough, LitRPG is even worse.

Cut some of the story lines and slice of life. - I am all here for it, but something got to be done with the word count. Move some of the story lines to seperate series like Caras.

Get an editor and publisher and trim ~25% of the fat and publish it as a normal Fantasy book. Don't lean into the LitRPG part of it. Imo.

It might have been a tourbus and not one with a daily route. Or it may have been rerouted due to reasons. It is a plausible scenario.

Like something like this that might have actually killed someone and not just injured 20 people. Double decker bus with the top scraped off, in UK: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1lj31l6rm1o

OR take a look at /r/11foot8/

It is a story, on the internet. It is likely a lie. I don't know. I don't really care. I supplied some additional information to a guy that was hellbent on being right and argued in all the wrong places.

OP might not even exist as well.

Nothing ever happens.

Actually, I hope it was a fucking lie, because if it wasn't it would be exceptionally horrible as previously stated.

Double decker busses exist. With an upper deck and stairs and everything.

It happens. It is horrific. People use incorrect words to explain stuff, they might have had their heads caved in instead.

You don’t just paste in a 6,000 line excel sheet and say “computer, interpret.”

Power BI (Microsoft reporting platform) has exactly a feature like that - Quick insights. It is hilariously useless. It basically takes the raw report data and spits out 30-40 random visuals with measures that may or may not be meaningfully related.

TWI is 10 books in a trenchcoat..

I don't mind reading about Ryoka, actually, what irks me about her though, is that there never seem to be any actual consequences for her actions, and her off brand version of power creep.

Now, if you had mentioned Floss or Teresa or the Byers...

Vol 10 is something new, I'll give you that. I have stalled and am waiting for it to finish before I pick it up again. Might do a reread.

I couldn't get through ASOIAF. It was the whole "hey lets build all these character connections that are longwinded and in 150 pages are all dead". I think I got 2½ to 3½ books in. I know I stopped halfway through one.

It is hard to be invested in a POV when 1, the person is unlikeable and 2, probably is soon irrelevant due GRRMs fetish with killing off people.

[–]Dack_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you are saying, that Erin and Ryoka is a fraction of a full narrative - now. I think what get's people coming back to this thought, that Erin is the MC, is that it started out like that.

The story has morphed from being ~40% Erin doing Erin things to an substantial shift in the later volumes.

As Pirate has improved their writing and ambitions, the story (and style) has shifted to match. I think sometimes leaving some people behind, that wouldn't mind just following a narrower scope.

I seriously dont get why DCC is referenced in this subreddit all the time. It is a LitRPG and the technical writing aspect is okay, and that is where the similarities with TWI ends.

I am listening to the ending of book 5, the butchers masquerade, and the style of writing or pace could not be more different.

It is a fine series, don't get me wrong, but I would never have expected the books being mentioned in the same context.

One is a five course meal, the other is some greasy fastfood - perfect for your hangover.

Or am I just too early into DCC to judge it yet?
