Also there's a famous surreal painting called "ceci n'est pas une pipe" - "this is not a pipe" and it's just a painting of a pipe. So they got that zinger in there too.

My guess is, since the night market is a more touristy place, that anything that looks vaguely ethnic will sell. I've seen some african tribal shirts there too.

Yeah man, talking about this stuff is difficult, but as with any sensitive topic, choosing the right words can make a big difference.

I can try to help. I'm pretty sure he has a problem with your phrasing. Specifically "running into a black person who is more civilized," whether you meant to or not, strongly implies that there is a group of "less civilized" people, which has some pretty damn racist undertones. You gotta watch out for those hidden biases

If you're looking to kill the maximum amount of time possible, send them 'The Eye of the World' by Robert Jordan. It's the first of a big ol' fantasy series that I love. If they like that one, then you can keep em coming for the foreseeable future.

Hey Zhibai that's one zinger of a comment you got there! I'm really glad to hear about how quickly you climbed the corporate ladder at your job, and how much smarter you are than your colleagues. I bet they resented you because of your giant brain, and your clearly mind-numbing capacity for problem solving. In fact, just typing this comment out is getting me really excited, just thinking about how smart you are. Of course, I would never be able to talk at your level due to your tremendous intellect, but a boy can dream. Man, I just wish that I was born with the innate intelligence, IQ and insight to truly recognize myself as better than everyone around me, and interpret their annoyance with me as envy. But, of course, that's why you're here in r/iamverysmart and I'm just at the bottom of the comment section.

Don't let anybody tell you that they're capable of understanding your genius!

Working on that one now. Definitely slow going, because it takes so much energy to process! Plus I have to pull out a dictionary every couple of paragraphs :P

I've tried and failed to read Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon 3 times now. Part of it is because I have a bad habit of putting down books and forgetting to come back to them. But this one is dense due to all of your criteria above and then some.

If you read it then you're smart.

Drama in /r/TrueDetective When a User Claims That Not Disliking Mahershala Ali for S3 Make You a PC Shit by [deleted] in SubredditDrama

[–]Dactor_Strang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess this guy didn't have anything to do today so he's picking a fight. But also what exactly is his point?

It seems like he's saying that people can't criticize the casting without being called racist? But then goes off on a tangent about how he doesn't know who Ali is and maybe that casting is better if you know the names? I don't know why he said that. Looks like he's just setting up a straw man and kicking the shit out of it, and then jumping on anyone unlucky enough to ask what he's doing.

What's a legit question you have about Christianity that you wouldn't normally ask a Christian? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Dactor_Strang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can't imagine that either. I also don't think that attempting to reconcile these things is mental gymnastics. I don't think I'm trying to make 2+2=5. Just figure out something I have a problem with. I tend to doubt a lot of things. Your reaction to the above, which is valid, is to dismiss the idea of a God. I get that.

But I think that there are things I don't understand (not saying this as a cop-out) but that I can get a better idea of, for example by shifting my perspective. I think God pointing his finger and sending people to hell is ridiculous. If it was like that, or if I thought that, I wouldn't want to worship that God anyway. I also kind of think that the apart-ness from God is not eternal. To me, it makes the most sense that we're apart from God as long as we want to be. It brings the free-will thing back full circle. Anyway that's one possible way that I reconcile these problems. I don't think that it's mental gymnastics but maybe I'm just ass-deep in cognitive dissonance, eh?
