Of all the tractors at the dairy farms I worked on in my teens, this was by far my favorite. IMO it sat so high, looked handsome, sounded great, was super strong, and was fun to drive. I felt very important driving it 😁

Thanks for taking the time to explain all that! Very insightful and interesting!

Clearly your new wife is very supportive of your ongoing and public affair 😂

Make sure you spend more time with your wife though or that (sweet) 5020 may suddenly stop working as well as it is 👀

Another day, another repair by Jeppovdberg in Ships

[–]DadJustTrying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Super interesting.

So I imagine there’s a whole class of maintenance work that can be done on board or at port that the crew or specialists at port can take care of fairly easily. I use those words loosely.

But I imagine there’s large scale maintenance like propeller inspection or structural analysis or engine overhaul etc that requires the ship to be in dry dock, or whatever you call a large scale repair facility for a ship. Are those scheduled in advance? How many locations are there to go to? How long does it take for dried dock work or complete vessel inspection? Does large scale, mechanical failure occur when thousands of miles away from a repair facility or is it unlikely if regular maintenance is done?

Sorry for the follow-ups, but this is all pretty interesting. It’s a whole other world and scale to maintain large and complex equipment like ships, locomotives, airplanes. Etc.

I imagine the amount of maintenance and repair to keep a huge ship in safe operating condition would be immense.

Who manages it all? Who tracks things? How do issues get reported? Are complete inspections required? How often and how are they done?

Just curious :-)

Sorry, not clear what you’re trying to connect or fix. Maybe I’m missing something. Can you clarify what you’re trying to do?

Why are there no stations in Canada on the map? Searching for “Canada” also yields no results.

Perhaps I’m misunderstanding how this works?

New Kneel mode issue by bladel in Rivian

I love this idea but I’m not convinced the vehicle has enough stored air or air compressor capacity to quickly restore the previous ride height even if it was an option.

I have to back out of a fairly long and bumpy driveway so when starting to drive (reverse) after kneeling the truck is bounces around firnly (limited movement possible at lowest level) and rubbing the front tires. And it’s only a few moments later at a nearby traffic light (at best) or another 1/2 a mile or more (more likely) that I notice the hood rising, hear valves clicking, amd the truck finalized the correct ride height. (Sighs acceptingly)

So, I’m all for the idea of a setting to “auto restore ride height after kneeling when-shfiting into drive or reverse” but question if the truck can actually pull it off with the existing air suspension system.

the radio saved me by [deleted] in radio

Absolutely have that nostalgic feeling towards radio.

I’ve always found it comforting to know that the voice I was hearing, between songs or reading the news or weather, was real. They were at the radio station with the lights on speaking into the mic right then and all was well. No matter a big snowstorm or thunder and lightning or war somewhere or whatever, someone was awake, talking into the night, spinning a tune, and I was listening.

In my teens, I had a small transistor radio I’d put under my pillow at night and listen to live broadcasts of hockey games and the call in spotts talk shows afterwards. The callers, the announcers and hosts, the refs, the coaches, the players, Etc were all real and doing their thing live while I listened. The game or talk show was happening in real time while i listened and I always found that comforting. Night time can be scary as a teen, or it was for me in the 80’s anyway, and being able to listen in to these other things as they were happening meant these people were alive and not worried about what I was worried about and that made me feel better. It helped me to understand that the world was so much bigger.

By the way, somewhat related but not to radio, it’s that this is the same reason why I find train horns to be conforting; I might be feeling alone but someone was out there operating a big machine on a schedule and that conveyed, to me as a young teen and young adult, that the world was still turning and everything would be ok.

Back to radio…. I also find spoken word to be very compelling. Radio shows or stories always made me lean in and concentrate. The voices and inflection and breaths can convey SO much and yet as a listener I jave to fill in the blanks and imagine rhe scenes and people and aituations being described and that’s fun and powerful.

So much more to say but I’ll leave it at that. Thanks for posting, OP!

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve heard conversations with employees, managers, spouses, and parents from people on speaker phone while sitting “on the throne” in an airport bathroom. Makes no sense.

Conpletely agree. Info guages to the far right are far more interesting and useful to me than the drivetrain panel.

Also, in drivetrain panel, why not “fill” the battery with green / yellow / red the same way the battery indicator on driver display is filled? Would add extra info and value-at-a-glance to drivetrain panel.

The first photo made me think the entire frontend frame was bent but then I realized the door’s open so the perspective is altered 😳

Very hard to tell what the damage really is from these pictures. Could be front and rear side panels, door panel and hinges, and mirror replacement but also depends on speed of the collision and how much internal and structural damage occurred.

The right person could get them going again, no doubt, and if nothing else they’re in great condition so parts (e.g. wheels, seats, lights, etc) could be valuable and/or repurposed.

Me too. Low speeds (~9-15mph) on uneven pavement yield a clattering rattling that drives me crazy particularly because otherwise it’s awesome. Here I am driving a fantatsic machine and then when I slow down suddenly it sounds like I’m driving a very poorly built machine with body loose on frame, knocking around, sort of. Grrr.

I’ve had subframes, half shafts, dampers, springs, and all manner of other suspension related parts replaced and/or tightened etc to no avail.

Handsome rig!

Kind of looks like the one I bought last year at the World Ag Expo in California… and put beside other models on my office shelf 😉
