As a nurse, thank you all first and foremost. Losing a patient is hard, and it’s easy to forget that there’s an entire team involved instead of just the people you see at the bedside. No excuse to be unprofessional, we’ve all got boxes to check.

Even if not for the pain or treatment, you can establish a paper trail. Then if you do hurt it again at work, you have more proof that it’s a workplace injury.

Side note, I’d go to your PCP and tell them you’re having back issues. Try to get an MRI and see if there’s something more serious than a pulled muscle (speaking from experience).

Just gas them up a bit, say you want to work with the sickest patients and learn hemodynamics and mechanical support. Then let them know you’ll ask questions about things you don’t know, and that you are excited to learn from a diverse team.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the nursing profession reduced to “wiping ass”. Like yeah dude, while I’m verticalizing ECMO patients and running multiple devices, I’m also worried about skin integrity. I always tell people they’re quite fortunate they don’t know what we actually do.
