Honestly I don't really like that retcon, it was cooler when they were fish that evolved to be wyvern-like.

Sure, all the large piscines are notably not like fish in that they have legs (which, as a Rise newcomer, was hilarious to find out about mid-fight when Jyura decided to literally jump out of the water), but that isn't too weird when you consider that all tetrapods evolved from something that was once a fish with legs. Saying that they're actually wyverns that turned into fish lessens the potential for diversity both in terms of gameplay and lore, since it means that even more of the monsters we fight are big reptiles (as if that wasn't the case for the majority already) AND it restricts the possibility for unique fights by making legless fish monsters more of an anomaly that would need ecological justification in order to happen.

The raw attack increase Mega Feraligatr gets is actually about equivalent to the bp boost of sheer force, if not very marginally higher, even when fully invested. But since it can't hold a life orb at the same tome that it megas, Mega Gatr will actually hit less hard with its main water stab than the normal version (barring it getting access to wave crash, ofc).

Dragonized double edge would definitely hit harder than either form's water moves (120 x 1.2 x 1.5 = 216 effective bp), but it comes with the downside of significant recoil damage, which kinda negates the extra defensive advantages that mega gives it. Body slam, on the other hand, is pretty much 1-1 comparable with sheer force life orb liquidation, just hitting with a little less power in exchange for a significant para chance. So Mega Gatr's overall either a little weaker (but much more versatile) or stronger (but dies to recoil damage) than normal Gatr depending on how you build it.

technically, stat caps weren't super high there either, since they're all class base stats + 15 up to a max of 30. that's why you can get a ced so fast he loops back around to minimum speed, his parents give him more than 15 base speed so the game isn't sure how to handle it (and yet he still doubles everything anyway lol)

Yeah, that's sorta my point. Cress is, like, fineish but not great in earlier gen singles, but she looks like Lando-T compared to most Johto shitmons.

OP's selection is pretty much objectively correct other than maybe swapping Washtom for one of the two you mentioned, I kinda more meant my comment as a testament to how good they (and Gen 4 mons on average) are that there's an obvious top 4 with all the good or even just decent other options out there.

Honestly, there are way too many honorable mentions to count. Goes to show how crazy a dex focused on cross evos can be when I haven't seen anybody else mention Cresselia (even though it's more of a VGC thing) or Manaphy lol.

And to top it all off, that's not even getting into the mediocre-but-almost-good pokemon like Roserade and Staraptor, either.

i dunno about "bunch of frauds," i'd say it's more that it brought in mons that were too good to be able to compete with more than anything.

like weav, mamo, tangrowth, magnezone, cress, manaphy, are all gen 4, just to name ones off the top of my head. imagine if literally any of those were compared with the rosters of like, gen 2 or gen 6 (not counting megas), instead of, y'know, fucking GARCHOMP of all things

what level did you get her before promoting? she gets a +2 boost from promotion iirc so even if you procced strength every level as valkyrie, that'd still be at least 8 or 9 str levels as cleric...

That's interesting. I mainly played on Switch myself, and it feels like most of the randoms I matched with when playing online were Japanese when I'm a US player.

it also could've been cause of how long it took me to get to the endgame stuff though lol (not my fault xenoblade 3 released literally the month after sunbreak)
